Different Search Results Depending On Location

Hello all,
I was talking to a client earlier this week and they were telling me that they were not ranking fora desired keyword term. When I, however, ran a Google search for the keyword term in question, the client's website was showing a ranking on my end.
We are both located in California. I'm in Southern California and they're in Northern California, but I don't think that should make a significant difference should it? Anyway, I've never run into such a quandary before and am curious to know if any of you out there can help me better understand why we're receiving different search results.
Any and all insights are welcomed and appreciated.

Yes I agree with the above comments.
Here is what may be throwing you. Pre-Pigeon it did not matter as much. I would check rankings all day from whatever city I happened to have set in my browser and it didn't matter.
But since Pigeon it does. You really need to set location to the query city to even try to get accurate results.
But even with that you'll often see different results than clients do, due to personalization. If you are checking their ranking a lot or clicking their links or checking the page, then they could rank higher for you. Sometimes it even varies by browser and as others have said can be different if logged in or not.
FYI if you ever need to check pure maps ranking realize that Classic maps is still showing the OLD algo and ranking order. But new maps is showing the Pigeon ranking order so if I client says I dropped down to H on maps, need so see which version of maps.
It all just keeps getting more complicate, doesn't it?

In addition to Monica's response, under search tools you can set your location. So set your client's city and see what they would see without any bias towards account or history preferences.

Geographical location can make a huge difference. So can the browser and whether or not you are logged into a google account when you are looking. Is this a keyword that is tracked with any rank tracking tool? If so, take that at face value. If you want to see what the SERP is, use IE, clear the cache, log out of everything and browse with and incognito window. That is about as virgin as a SERP can get.

Why is a Google Listing Showing Up in a Different Town Than Its Address?
I have a client who runs a dental office on the outskirts of Racine, WI. His address specifically shows up as being in Racine, however, his GMB profile has always showed with the category of "Dentist in Mount Pleasant, WI" displaying below the photos. (Mount Pleasant is the next town over and his office straddles the line between the two towns in Google's overlay map of the town.) Obviously this is frustrating and I'm concerned that his location is hurting his ability to rank in the larger, more populous town of Racine. Have any other SEOs ever encountered this? VERY specific Google search result not showing
Hello, I'm doing this google search "Peruvian Lilies Delivery To Athens, Alabama globalrose", in the hopes of this page appearing. It does not! Does anyone know why this page (or most pages in out local.globalrose.com subdomain) aren't appearing on Google search results?

How to perform a search as though you are in a local city
Hi community. So I live in Dubai but have a lot of clients in the UK that want local SEO. Does anyone have any tips on performing search queries in Google that reflect a true search results page as though that search was being performed in a chosen UK city? say if I wanted to see the SERPs for "hairdressers" in the city of Bristol in the UK, at the moment I get a pretty vague UK SERP from With lots of Dubai based adverts et. Any tips would be great, thanks

No Location option in Incognito Search Settings
I was checking on a client ranking and went to Incognito in Chrome for the search. I went to search settings to set the location and thought I had done something wrong. I closed and went back to search settings and still no location setting. See attached. Interestingly, when I went to my signed in Chrome and set the location and then went to incognito and went to search settings, then location showed up for me. This also begs a question about why Google has this where you must be signed in to set a location in Incognito mode. Thanks for any input you have, Robert G1lS9EK.png cRRlULo.png

How do I get a photos to display next to my Google Maps results in the SERP?
Why do photos show up next to the map in the Google Maps display on the SERP, while sometimes it doesn't. Am I missing something as far as a setting or place to upload the image or is it something that Google auto-populates?

Google Local Search
I have a customer who is frustrated that Google local search seems to favor businesses that are closer to the center of the city. He wants to be on the local results area on the SERP with his (keyword + city, state). His website is optimized, Google+ is using the keywords, more reviews than his competition and his MOZ local rating is 88.. It seems the only problem is his business is on the edge of town(same zip code). Google fills the local search area with businesses that are "downtown". Is there a way to overcome this?

How to remove a former business location from Google Places?
I've received a strange response from Google Places on local listings for a home builder. Google's rep suggested that we not list the new home sales center (a model home) since at some point it will change from being a business listing to a residential listing. That is just wrong. It will be a place of business for the next 3 years and then will flip to being a private residence. These days it is uncommon, but not that rare to turn over ownership from public to private or vice versa (A residence becoming a law or other commercial establishment. Or a whole office building becoming condos.) The issue is, when it does happen, how do we get Google and others to recognize that a business is no longer a business location? I've had trouble bringing down the address of former former model home sales centers on Google Places much to the chagrin of the residents.
