Content in Tabs
-
I speed read an article recently and forgot to save it regarding Contents on a page in tabs.
Is it correct that now Google is rendering the entire page it's better not to have content in tabs hidden by Javascript?
As it stands at the moment, we've got the tabs set-up so that the main part of the page containing the keyword rich text is in a tab and not the first thing presented to the user

Thanks for your reply
I've been googling exerts of the content in tabs and nothing listed for our site so will try changing some of them not be in tabs and see if that makes a difference

That video is from 2011 and talks about hiding spammy, hidden text. All it is saying is make it natural.
Anything that isn't done correctly will not be rewarded. That is so important to remember. Keep things natural and don't hide the important stuff. Drop down menus and "read more" links are used on a ton of websites. It isn't something that should be abused, it is a tool to help organize a page and make it look appealing. It isn't supposed to be a way to keyword stuff an area in hopes to rank better.
That is what both this video and this article say. Like any SEO tool, don't abuse it.

Google does recognize that tabbed content can be hidden and doesn't penalize you for it or count it against you in anyway. The content is in the source code, the content is crawled.
Most every responsive design out there has tabs and clickable, expandable content. The important thing is to make sure the content is unique and informative. It shouldn't be given such a negative connotation just because it is called "hiding". The kind of hidden content that doesn't get indexed is keyword stuffed, duplicate and spammy content. That is what gets penalized, not good content that is merely organized to provide an aesthetically pleasing website.

I thought Matt Cutts said that Google recognises that tabbed content could be hidden and its not a factor to be hit with any penalty as long as its not stuffed with rubbish. This is going off my memory and could be wrong ;o)

Have a read of this: Google: Your Content In Tabs & Click To Expand May Not Be Indexed Or Ranked
I'd have a look at the source code and see if the content is readable. Also copy and past snippets of the "hidden" text into Google to see if it is being indexed.

I have thousands of reviews and product descriptions behind tabs and drop down menus on my site. I have to have them this way because I have 20-30k words on each page. I have to organize it somehow. I use h tags in the tab titles to make sure Google knows that the content is relevant. To this date I have not had an issue with the content being crawled and indexed.

In addition to what Leonie just said, one technique I first spotted on zappos.com and I often use is to put the excerpt of the content on top of the page with a read more button pointing to an on-page anchor to the full text to the bottom of the page.
It's not something you can always do without impairing UX, and I have no idea if google algo prefer that when compared to hiding the same content behind a js click.
But I also remember Matt Cutts discussing this in a video and say to do not worry too much because they do understand in today ui there's plenty of valuable content show through tabs, carousel and so on.
But you know, seems "don't worry too much" is one of his favourite sentence.

Hi, I know this video / hangout about there is a question about content after read more button / tab
The advice is, that if content is important don't put it behind tab / read more button. Google can see this content as hidden or less important, and will try to ignore it.
By using the word "try" you can ask yourself, is Google abled to ignore this content.. i don't know.
Anyway if you look at the importance of the content; i'll say always show important content to your clients, do not hide it behind tabs and or read more buttons.
grtz, Leonie

Classified ads site and thin content + titles
Hello, i have two questions. Issue 1 is that we are a classified ads site. I started thinking, analyzing why im not ranking even tho i have a lot more content than others and my backlink profile is also better. Googling the advertisements i see that 95% of it is duplicate content. People usually who advertise, add the same add to 10 maybe 30 sites. For google this is duplicate content. Any ideas what to do? I can manually edit ads, to write a bit of unique content, but that is not a long term startegy. Question 2: My titles are all the same - Unique Name - Keyword im trying to rank for. There is around 1000 of such pages. Should i mix the titles up or it is still better to have 1 keyword which will help me to rank?

Duplicate content on domains we own
Hello! We are new to SEO and have a problem we have caused ourselves. We own two domains GoCentrix.com (old domain) and CallRingTalk.com (new domain that we want to SEO). The content was updated on both domains at about the same time. Both are identical with a few exceptions. Now that we are getting into SEO we now understand this to be a big issue. Is this a resolvable matter? At this point what is the best approach to handle this? So far we have considered a couple of options. 1. Change the copy, but on which site? Is one flagged as the original and the other duplicate? 2. Robots.txt noindex, nofollow on the old one. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Duplicate Content- Best Practise Usage of the canonical url
Canonical urls stop self competition - from duplicate content. So instead of a 2 pages with a rank of 5 out of 10, it is one page with a rank of 7 out of 10.

However what disadvantages come from using canonical urls. For example am I excluding some products like green widet, blue widget. I have a customer with 2 e-commerce websites(selling different manufacturers of a type jewellery). Both websites have massive duplicate content issues.
It is a hosted CMS system with very little SEO functionality, no plugins etc. The crawling report- comes back with 1000 of pages that are duplicates. It seems that almost every page on the website has a duplicate partner or more. The problem starts in that they have 2 categorys for each product type, instead of one category for each product type.
A wholesale category and a small pack category. So I have considered using a canonical url or de-optimizing the small pack category as I believe it receives less traffic than the whole category. On the original website I tried de- optimizing one of the pages that gets less traffic. I did this by changing the order of the meta title(keyword at the back, not front- by using small to start of with). I also removed content from the page. This helped a bit. Or I was thinking about just using a canonical url on the page that gets less traffic.
However what are the implications of this? What happens if some one searches for "small packs" of the product- will this no longer be indexed as a page. The next problem I have is the other 1000s of pages that are showing as duplicates. These are all the different products within the categories. The CMS does not have a front office that allows for canonical urls to be inserted. Instead it would have to be done going into the html of the pages. This would take ages. Another issue is that these product pages are not actually duplicate, but I think it is because they have such little content- that the rodger(seo moz crawler, and probably googles one too) cant tell the difference.
Also even if I did use the canonical url - what happened if people searched for the product by attributes(the variations of each product type)- like blue widget, black widget, brown widget. Would these all be excluded from Googles index.
On the one hand I want to get rid of the duplicate content, but I also want to have these pages included in the search. Perhaps I am taking too idealistic approach- trying to optimize a website for too many keywords. Should I just focus on the category keywords, and forget about product variations. Perhaps I look into Google Analytics, to determine the top landing pages, and which ones should be applied with a canonical. Also this website(hosted CMS) seems to have more duplicate content issues than I have seen with other e-commerce sites that I have applied SEO MOZ to On final related question. The first website has 2 landing pages- I think this is a techical issue. For example www.test.com and www.test.com/index. I realise I should use a canonical url on the page that gets less traffic. How do I determine this? (or should I just use the SEO MOZ Page rank tool?)0 -
Mobile blog creating duplicate title and content issues
My site is set up with a mobile website and after running the on page SEO report on moz it is returning multiple errors for duplicate title tags and duplicate content all related to the mobile website being a direct reflection of the main site. I want to know if this is really an issue. I'm sure Google actually knows the difference between my main site and the mobile version. Do I really need to go through each individual mobile page and change each page title and modify all the content? I really would like to avoid doing this but at the same time would like to fully optimize my site. Any advice is appreciated.

Should I worry about duplicate titles on pages where there is paginated content?
LivingThere.com is a real estate search site and many of our content pages are "search result" - ish in that a page often provides all the listings that are available and this may go on for multiple pages. For example, this is a primary page about a building: http://livingthere.com/building/31308-Cocoa-Exchange Because of the number of listings, the listings paginate to a second page: http://livingthere.com/building/31308-Cocoa-Exchange?MListings_page=2 Both pages have the same Page Title. Is this a concern? If so is there a "best practice" for giving paginated content different titles? Thanks! Nate

How to SEO a website that is being help back by duplicate content?
We have over 20 websites that sell property. Each website is targeted to a different country. People advertise to sell their property. The websites are not getting to page 1 for the terms we want probably because of duplication issues. If we compare one website with another country website on www.duplicatecontent.net we find it is nearly 70% between one and the other. So we trying to understand why this is. If someone wanted to sell a property in Spain we would create an advert for them but rather than putting this on the back-end of the Spain website it goes on a separate website that does on all countries. We have tried to put nofollow tags so that the country specific website gets acknowledgement of being the original website but the rankings for key-terms will not rise and the duplication % remains nearly 70%. Can anyone suggest the best way forward?

Duplicate Product BUT Unique Content -- any issues?
We have the situation where a group of products fit into 2 different categories and also serve different purposes (to the customer). Essentially, we want to have the same product duplicated on the site, but with unique content and it would even have a slightly different product name. Some specifications would be redundant, but the core content would be different. Any issues?
