URL Structure - Is this correct? Programming Advice Needed
-
Hello
My father is having a website built called www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk. The site consists of different product categories as set out below
1.Engineered Wood, 2. Parquet & Reclaimed and 3. Prefinished Wood
filtering further into colours
1. /lights-greys/, 2. /beiges/, 3, /browns/ and 4. /darks-blacks
and then the brand name for example Vicenza. Example of a clean url **http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/lights-greys/vicenza/ **
Each and every url is unique
Our programmer has put in place 301 redirects - http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/lights-greys-engineered-wood/vicenza/ - Is this really needed? It does not look clean and will appear like this is Google. This is a completely new site, a new start up business.
I'm very confused as to why he has done this and concerned this method of programming does now follow "best practice". Can any programmer offer any advice? To get a better idea how the url structure is set out, I have attached a jpg image.
Thank you
Faye

Fantastic! Thanks Dean

Hi Faye,
Yes with custom taxonomies. Familiarise yourself with 'Basic diagram on taxonomies and their relationships in Wordpress' over at http://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies and also look at Taxonomy Generator here http://generatewp.com/taxonomy/ for a quick way.
There are also plugins such as http://wp-types.com/ that will allow you to do all this without coding.

so we can have our respective "colours" after our main sub categories, even though these colour categories are the same?
/prefinished-wood/browns/
/parquet-reclaimed/browns/
/engineered-wood/browns/
-
Hi Dean
Please don't apologise. Your feedback is really helpful. Do you know if we can create our preferred categories in word press?
-
Hi Faye,
Sorry for going off on a tangent. Personally I would go with the following (to avoid the 301 completely):
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/ as a parent page
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/verona as a child page
Then use categories to identify the colours as these are the product variants
Or switch it about to suit yourself, however I think the parent / child / category is the way forward unless you wish to create another taxonomy which is easy for any decent coder.
With custom taxonomies you can create whatever configuration you wish.

Hi Dean
This is directing away from my question, but yes - there is a big market for folks searching for these flooring types hence our keyword for this url is "black engineered wood". Our split categories allows us to have a more "diverse" keyword spectrum, which further reflects within our url, h1 and page title. Categorises will also allow us to add a variety of different products building our long tail keywords around this.
We probably could shorten the url from http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/darks-blacks/verona/ to http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered/darks-blacks/verona/ as the word "wood" exists within our primary domain name. Thanks for your input Dean, very much appreciated.

Hi,
Firstly I would ask myself, what would I want to see as a person looking for this product. Am I searching for the brand, the type of flooring or the colour
Do people know what engineered, prefinished, reclaimed wood is when looking for flooring, is verona only ever available as Dark Engineered Wood? if so then why have such along url structure.
Rather than:
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/darks-blacks/verona/Perhaps:
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/verona

Migration to new URL structure
Hi guys, Just wondering what your processes are when moving a large site to a completely new URL structure on the same domain. Do you 301 everything from old page to new page, or are your more selective - i.e. only 301 pages that have a certain page authority, for example. Thanks!

Shortening URL's
Hello again Mozzers, I am debating what could be a fairly drastic change to the company website and I would appreciate your thoughts. The URL structure is currently as follows Product Pages
Technical SEO | | ATP
www.url.co.uk/product.html Category Pages
www.url.co.uk/products/category/subcategory.html I am debating removing the /products/ section as i feel it doesn't really add much and lengthens the url with a pointless word. This does mean however redirecting about 50-60 pages on the website, is this worth it? Would it do more damage than good? Am i just being a bit OCD and it wont really have an impact? As always, thanks for the input0 -
Should I change or redirect this URL?
Happy Friday everyone! I just noticed that one of our Attorney Profile's url's is wrong. We used to have someone named "Dana Fortugno" as our Family Law attorney, but when he left, (over two years ago) we hired "Scott Finelli." The person who setup the site, just changed the information on the page not url. So instead of it saying "http://www.kempruge.com/scott-finelli-jd-llm/;" it says "http://www.kempruge.com/dana-fortugno-jd-llm/." I'm considering taking all the content on the page with the wrong url, copying it to a new page with the correct URL and 301 redirecting (what would now be a blank page) to the new page with the correct URL. Is this the best way to handle this? Also, I don't believe there are many SEO concerns regarding the pages specifically. The profile pages aren't what we rank for in any of our Family Law related keywords. I am worried about having a completely blank page that just 301 redirects as looking bad to google, but not sure if it would? As always, thank you for your time and any assistance you can provide. Ruben

Correct Indexing problem
I recently redirected an old site to a new site. All the URLs were the same except the domain. When I redirected them I failed to realize the new site had https enable on all pages. I have noticed that Google is now indexing both the http and https version of pages in the results. How can I fix this? I am going to submit a sitemap but don't know if there is more I can do to get this fixed faster.

Well, I need some help, advice, something.
Hey all, I'm new to the SEOmoz thing but I like it so far. I think I have my site listing so messed up that it's effecting my rank. I have 3 domains. 1.) rt112media.com 2.) route112media.com 3.) route112.net. Each domain was purchased through GoDaddy.com and still remain there. I have my own hosting account which I was registered as rt112media.com with route112media.com and route112.net listed as add on domains. Technically, I would like for my main site to be route112media.com for everything. However when I registered the site as rt112media.com I didn't know the issues I would have as far as different domains so I registered with rt112media.com as my main domain name. Anyways, as of now I have rt112media.com as my main domain through my cpanel hosting.I have both domains route112media.com and route112.net set for 301 wildcard redirects to rt112media.com on my hosting account and my GoDaddy account. When I started my WMT account I didn't really know which domain to use cause I figured I could link them all to one. So, I signed up as routet12media.com. After a little while I realized it was not recieving anything because everything was being redirected to rt112media.com Anyways both addresses have been crawled and indexed so they are showing as two. So, I requested to change the route112media.com address to rt112media.com in WMT. That was about 2 weeks ago and it is still pending request. I'm not having further problems with WMT because of the www.rt112media.com vs http://rt112media.com. I am the verified owner of both but I can not switch the www.rt112media account to show the non www. account as the main one because I have the other pending. My site is still being crawled as 2 versions rt112media.com and route112media.com. So what is my best option? And what would be the worst cause scenario if I wanted to start completely over using route112media.com as my main domain with hosting and all. Sorry this was so long I just wanted to explain my situation. I'm lost. Any advice would be appreciated! http:/rt112media.com

Hyphen in URL
Hi, I would like to know if the following statement holds true today or it doesn't matter whether we use hyphens or underscore If you have a URL like keyword1_keyword2, Google will only return that page if the user searches for keyword1_keyword2 ( highly unlikely ) . But If you have a URL like keyword1-keyword2, that page can be returned for the searches - keyword1,keyword2 and even “keyword1keyword2” Thanks
