Website Rankings - Provincial Movers
-
Hello Moz Community,
We have been working with a company called Provincial Movers to optimize their website. We are focusing our efforts on building external local & relevant citations, however, I can't help but think there is more we can do internally --> www.provincialmoving.com
The previous provider created a LOT of articles that are not necessarily relevant to the website like this: http://www.provincialmoving.com/blogs/
Do you guys have any suggestions for cleaning up the website so it performs better on Google?
Thanks,
Anton

what Miriam said here - "...what you need to have there is the local number as the primary number; not the toll free one...." IS SO VERY VERY important, eh!
follow that advice!!!

Hi Anton!
It's good that you're working on the website (needs some help design-wise with alignment issues, crowding, etc.) and that you're working on citation development and consistency (always vital to any Local SEO campaign). Some thoughts I'll just reel off here:
-
Good you've got the complete NAP in the footer, but what you need to have there is the local number as the primary number; not the toll free one. I see you've got a local number on the Contact page, which is good, but you should really put your local number foremost. While it's true that Google has recently become more tolerant of 800 numbers as primary numbers, other aggregators/directories are not equally tolerant and citation consistency can suffer unless you're making the local number dominant.
-
The big list of cities served in the footer could be viewed as a violation of Google's webmaster guidelines that frown upon chunks of geographic terms like this. Putting this in the footer makes it especially risky, in my opinion, as that's always been such a contentious area for spammy stuff, right? Now let's click on these footer links.

The number one thing that is really jumping out about this site to me is the unloved state of the copy. I don't want to hurt the feelings of anyone who may have worked on this, but to be honest, the content would best be described as generic. It looks to me like someone looked up these cities in Wikipedia, wrote down notes about feet above sea level and population and said, "There, I'm done, thank goodness!". This is not the approach any business owner should take to the content that is representing to their customers just how much they care. If the copy is careless, the business can come off as such, and when you're in an industry charged with safely delivering the priceless valuables of human customers from one location to another, you want content that says:
-
We care - we care a ton!
-
We are detail-oriented
-
We do the best job - we don't just get by.
-
We can be trusted
-
We built this website to help customers
-
We make the maximum effort at all times - not the minimum effort
Go to the about page of the site and really read though the content. Does it convey any of the above to you, in a way that seems genuine, or does it feel a bit like someone slapped it together, hoping to get by with it?
The thing about content like this that really gets me is that I can almost guarantee that the business owner does care. You don't run a successful business like this without tremendous dedication. What is lacking here is the kind of talent that can pick up on what the story is with this business and parlay that into a business story, told on the website, that resonates with customers.
What this business needs most, in my opinion, is a talented listener who knows how to turn what they hear into a high quality story, across the website, the blog, and via social outreach. Hope this is helpful input.

Maintaining Rank During a Domain Change
Looking to the community for any insights on our situation. We moved a decently ranked domain name that was ranking between 3rd-6th in organic search results to a new domain that we thought would serve us higher position in the long term. We went through Google's change of address tool and over a period of 2 to 3 weeks we went from being off the map with our new domain to showing up again around page 2 - 14-18th position. It seemed that our climb back corresponded to Google indexing our new urls. Each time a large batch was indexed we seemed to jump back up. But, in our last report we noticed that we didn't budge any higher and some of our non-branded keywords actually dropped a little. The old domain was "citychurchfamily.org" and the new domain is "citychurchbloomington.org". We were thinking that the latter would be a stronger domain in the long term. Any insights on why we haven't fully retained our former ranking value at this point or anything I should be focusing on? We are trying to rank for this phrase "churches in bloomington, in". Thanks!

Ranking could be better - wondering why
Hi there, I do SEO for the page conny-ehm.de. I improved the subsite http://www.conny-ehm.de/bewerbungsfotos-freiburg.html to receive an A grade by the on-page grader for the words Bewerbungsfotos Freiburg. However when searching for Bewerbungsfotos Freiburg it is not the subsite that shows up but the main page www.conny-ehm.de. This however get an F in the on-page grader. What should I do to improve the ranking? I do not care which one shows up but I think it should be feasible to get under the top 3. a) Should I improve also the main page for the keywords? I think than I am building an internal concurrence to the subsite which is maybe rather bad. b) Should I place a del canonical on the main site referring to the subsite? c) ??? Thanks for your answers Best regards Marc

What to do with localised landing pages on listings website - Canonical question
Hi Run a pet listings website and we had tonnes of duplicate content that we have resolved. But not sure what to do with the localised landing pages. We have everything pointing back back to the main listings URL http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale-stud-and-adoption/ but haven't pointed the URLs that show pets for specific towns and cities eg http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale/dogs-and-puppies/in-city-of-london/ back to the main url. Obviously this is giving us duplicate content issues, but these pages do rank in local search and drive traffic into the site. So my question is should we canonicalise the local pages back to the main url and if we do will this mean our local landing pages will no longer rank? Is there any alternatives?

Does building multiple websites hurt you seo wise? Good or bad strategy?
HI,rategy. So I spoke to a local Colorado seo company and they suggested to find whatever keywords is the most searched under my GWT's and put .com behind it and build other sites for other keywords. I was curious about this type of strategy. Does this work? This seo guy said I could just get a DBA bank account and such for each domain name etc. I am not wanting to mislead anyone, but I am curious if for the sake of promoting other services, if creating other websites with partial and EMD's are worthwhile? Another issue I worry about is if I put my companies phone number, then next thing you know there is 3 or 4 sites that use that same phone number. To me this does not build trust with Google. But being I am learning, maybe this is a common strategy, or doomed from the start. Just curious what you think. Would you build other sites to try and rank for other services? Or keep one sites and maximize it? Thank you for your thoughts. I just do not want to pay $3000 per site if it will hurt not help.

Local Rank riddle
Here is a very odd scenario which to me makes very little sense. How can a site rank on Page #1 of Google for let's say "Boston party planner" yet on Page#2 for "party planner Boston"?? Would love some insight on this one. thanks, Chris

Ranking after switching to Wordpress
About 2 weeks ago we have switched our website and our blog to Wordpress (our website was about 400 pages) our blog was originally on Sgopify website (the blog was about 800 pages). One of the reasons we transferred all the blogs from our account on Shopify to our domain is because we were told that this will help our ranking. We switched everything in the last 2 weeks to Wordpress under the same domain name. The only thing that was changed are the URLs. We also did a 301 redirect however the dilemma we have now is not ranking at all although before the transfer we were ranking 1st or 2nd for certain keywords on organic search. Does anyone know why is this happening? Thank you

Website and eshop with the same product descrition is duplicate content
Hi there! I'm building a website that is divided in a "marketing" and "shop" sections. The 2 sites are being authored by two companies (my company is doing the marketing one). The marketing site has all the company products while the shop will sell just some of those. I'm facing the problem of duplicated content and want to ask you guys if it will be a problem/mistake to use the same product description (and similar url) for the same product in both sites, and the right way to do it (without rewriting product descriptions). the main site will be : www.companyname.com
