How can I transform my knowledge into products?
-
Hi Mozers,
Since 7 years, I've learned a lot about SEO, analytics, local, PPC,... from sources like Moz, Distilled, Market Motive,... and I'm using tools like Moz Analytics, Majestic, SEMrush, Wordstream,... but I've some difficulties to transform my knowlegde into products/services that I could sell as an freelance consultant.
Audits is an example of easy product that I could sell but have you another examples of "easy" products that I could developp as an freelance consultant?
Thank you for your help.

Hi guys,
Thank you very much for your time and your help, I've found a lot of example of "SEO products" in the Moz's listing.

Jonathan

Egol I agree that a bespoke solution is always best and a decent consultant will guide a client as to what they need and what will work best in their situation. However I believe it is possible to create certain "products" or packages to offer as a basic solution and then further tailor them to the clients needs - I have seen agencies work like this and produce results for clients.
If you offer specific products or packages as a technique to initiate work with a new client then you can further enhance this and tailor it to a specific client with your own knowledge making it bespoke. This is where you need to sense check what the client is asking for in order to make sure it will work for them and achieve results.
Obviously an audit is a great start as this "product" will allow you to get a picture of where the site is and what needs doing.
Somebody comes to you wanting to rank for their business or service locally -
Another example of a "product" that is often offered is a local SEO package or process that lots of companies predefine and seem to have a lot of success with. You could even say that is what Moz do this with Moz Local to an extent - offering a product that takes care of a specific aspect of Local SEO.
As we are in agreement that a custom solution is always best -
Probably the best "product" would be a set amount of time for an initial consultation to help diagnose the persons needs...
-
If you are going to come up with yet another product in the market, you will not survive in the market for a longer period of time.
I really agree with Moosa.
Much of the time, people who need help don't know what product they need. They need a smart person to diagnose a problem and carry through with the work of fixing it.
When I have a problem there has never been a product to solve it, the solution is usually finding expertise and that is a custom solution every time.
-
Jonathan, the best way to start is by placing the problems at the front of you and see what problems are important and whose solutions are not easily available. When you say audit, the first thing that comes in to my mind is Screaming Frog. If you can make something more amazing and detailed then screaming Frog you should go for it.
Same goes for others. The idea is simple, place the problems at the front of you, think about the solution you have, see what other products offer the same and see if you can come up with a better option.
If you are going to come up with yet another product in the market, you will not survive in the market for a longer period of time.
Just a thought!

Hi Jonathan,
Have you considered looking at what your competition are doing in terms of products in relation to SEO and digital marketing. Many of them will have this all packaged on their websites so you can take a look and get an idea what they are doing and make your own versions...
I am sure you know who you are competing against in your market but if not just Google some location specific terms and have a look at their services, packages, etc.
You could also have a look at the Moz recommended companies list - http://moz.com/community/recommended
Simple I know, but hope this helps and good luck

Multiview - Are they worth or can I do it myself?
Hi, I'm new to the Moz Community here although I have visited this site quite a few times. Recently my company has been contacted by MultiView for a B2B marketing strategy to get our business in front of targeted and potential customers - based on behavior of website visitors - basically behavior based marketing and inbound lead summary. Are you all familiar with what Multiview does? If not, I can explain some more. But, I have a couple questions: Are they actually what they claim to be? Are they a trustworthy company? Is there a way I can do everything they are telling me with the getting particular ads in front of people based on behaviors (similar to AdWords, but this seems more in depth) and detailed info for the visitors to my site (actually see who they are)? I realize this may take more work on my part than having them do it. But, is there a way I can collect this info myself and do all this work myself? Behavior based campaigns and this sort of thing are new to me, as I haven't worked with this before for my company. So, any and all info is appreciated! Thanks!

Can You Suggest 3 Books to Help Me with My 2014 Seth Godin Pick 3 Project?
Yesterday in Seth's blog he gave a wonderful suggestion for making 2014 a remarkable year. He suggested that you pick 3 people who have influence over your life/work and select three books to buy and give to these them to have them read, and then, discuss with you. Here's how he describes it: "Identify three books that challenge your status quo, business books that outline a new attitude/approach or strategy, or perhaps fiction or non-fiction that challenges you. Books you've read that you need them to read. Buy the three books for each of the three people, and ask them each to read all three over the holiday break." - http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2013/12/pick-three.html Don't worry about whether or not I've read the books you are suggesting. If I choose one, I'll read it first before asking someone else to read it. Here are some of my ideas: The End of Business as Usual - Brian Solis [currently reading] Don't Make Me Think - Steve Krug The New Rules of Marketing and PR - David Meerman Scott Positioning - The Battle for Your Mind - Ries and Trout Influence - Robert Cialdini Engage - Brian Solis The Dip - Seth Godin Keep It Simple - Siegel & Etzkorn Buy - Ology - Lindstrom The Long Tail - Chris Anderson FYI - The three people I've identified to share books with are my CEO (to whom I directly report), our Marketing Director (who is a peer, but who controls most of the marketing budget), and the Vice President of Retail Sales (He is also one of 5 co-owners of the business and a major stakeholder). The books you suggest can be the same for all three or different for all three. I think the major challenges we are facing in 2014 is agility, branding and redefining or abandoning old business practices that are costly, time wasters, inefficient, or all of the above. Thanks everyone!

Can not get the ranking needle to move even after a year with a US based SEO company
Hello community, I have spent the last 16 months spending lots of money on our USA Based SEO company and on content. For some reason. The powers who may be at Google are not giving us any love. I am beginning to become very dissapointed after all of our efforts. We did have a link penalty a year ago however that has long ago been removed. We have been doing everything our SEO company has asked us but the needle is not moving. Any ideas for us? http://tinyurl.com/n2yoeyn Thank you in advance. Chris

Penguin 2.0 Update - Just Hit - Google Messes up again, can anyone on SEOMOZ please tell me why or how some of these websites are ranking?
I am getting a bit tired now writing all of this so please excuse grammar and spelling mistakes, I wanted to post this up quickly tonight so I could possibly get some feedback by morning. So I feel I figured out some of the new update that just hit and I am sure the update will continue to keep coming and rankings will most likely change for a while, but I do have a few questions in the mean time if they stay. Please look below, why would some of those sites be ranking? Some sites utilize no onpage SEO, some no backlinks, one of the sites is a single page site and every page is a broken link even the contact us page and it's rank 1..... I am not 100% sure that Google got this one right. I see many instances below where other sites are much higher quality and have more authority. It's as if Google took terrible sites and said here is a site for you, now deal with it and I hope it works out at the top. I do see several sites that belong on the first page, but I see others that are very questionable. This is how the following is written below. Before the url is the anchor text density % for the site. This indicates the percentage of the amount of times the anchor text was backlined versus other anchor texts they used. Issues with the sites. Most of these sites don't utilize onpage SEO and it's clearly not a factor for onpage density purposes, there is a site with 37% keyword density on it. Some sites even have broken links. Please note: I already know that there is a lot of data that is analyzed to determine rankings more than this, but PA/DA is suppose to be a major factor according to everyone that believes in SEOMOZ.org. So I am taking in account for many of those factors being calculated due to this. These are just some random keywords I picked, because I know you need to analyze other SEO firms after and update to figure out what lasted and what didn't. All of my sites lasted due to ethical tactics, but I had some rankings move down and others go up, very odd. The onpage SEO is sloppy and the writing looks forced. Why is this even ranking? The site also looks low quality. The density is higher than SEOMOZ even and it has less words. Product Schema - Not supported if you don't actually sell the product online...
Based on this answer from Google, http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=146750 you can't use the product schema if a customer has to make the purchase offline or at another retailer. Does anyone know why they set it up this way? Has anyone ever tried to use product markup on a website when the product is purchased offline? Also, is there another solution or another markup that would apply? Thanks!

Google Product Feeds - New Requirements
We are in the jewelry industry, and for Google product feeds, we list our products under "Apparel & Accessories > Jewelry". As of the new Google feed requirements, they are saying that we have to choose a gender and color for each product that is in the Apparel category. While this makes sense for clothes, it doesn't exactly for jewelry because many items are for both men and women, and there's not always a color associated with each product. I can enter some of these fields manually, but with 5,000+ products, it makes it difficult w/ each update. Anyone have solutions for this? Or a way around it? Can we just include those fields but leave them blank? Any other solutions?
