Stuck on Page 4...is this diagnosis on the right track?
-
My website's (http://bartlettpairphotography.com) SERP rank is #45 for my targeted keyword: Philadelphia wedding photographers. My site is several years old, with 31-Domain Authority and 42-Page Authority. I've been stuck in SERP 40's for about a year now (I used to be top 5) and I have been pulling my hair out trying everything to no avail. I have an inkling that some configuration is seriously wrong, and would be very very appreciative is someone could point me in the right direction! I'm evidently not an expert at this, but here are my high level thoughts, though I could be totally off base here:
Homepage problems (ranking 45 for highest priority keyword: Philadelphia wedding photographers):
- The #5 rank has a flash website, homepage = 33-DA/44-PA (slightly better than me). This makes me wonder if my problem is off-page? I have recently been submitting my photography work to many relevant wedding blogs so I think I will get some nice relevant backlinks in the coming weeks/months.
- The #11 rank has the same wordpress theme as me (ProPhotoBlogs), and homepage = 26-DA, 35-PA (somewhat worse than me) and similar homepage content etc...this makes me think I have an on-page problem?
- As you can see, my targeted keyword starts off with a geographic location. Geographically, our location is ~1 hour outside of the location, so ranking on Google maps etc. is very competitive (hundreds of competitors that are closer). Therefore, I'm mostly focused on non-local ranking. Both of the competitors I mentioned are ranking non-locally and both are 1 hour outside Philadelphia. With that said, would it still benefit me to add local content to my homepage (insert google maps, address, hours etc.)?
NON-homepage problems (ranking ~30 for longer tail keywords, i.e. specific wedding venues)
- My blog page (http://bartlettpairphotography.com/blog) is ="noindex, follow." My reasoning for the "noindex" is because I'm showing FULL posts rather than excerpts (because I want my brides to flip through ~5 weddings rather than only clicking on 1). My thinking was that the FOLLOW aspect would pass along the link juice, while avoiding a duplicate content penalty by noindexing? I don't think this problem affects my higher priority homepage problem, but still wanted to point it out.
- We have ~100 published posts, but honestly I only care about ranking for ~30 of them. What should I do with the ~70 that I don't care about? Are they sucking up link juice that would be better elsewhere? Or should I just leave it because it's more content?
Other than that, I'm really lost as to how I can improve my site. I gave the above examples to show that I am trying, but ultimately I feel like I'm looking in the wrong areas. With my SERP in the mid 40s, I feel like many things are broken that I am not able to figure out. I would be so very grateful if someone could help diagnose my issues!

Great! I will work to clean this up. I'm hoping that since there is no Manual Action that the algorithm will take care of itself without needing a Manual Reconsideration.
-
I was thinking how to answer this, but it is so simple: Yes and Yes for both of the questions
Let me know if you need further assistance.
-
Thank you Keszi - after reading your link I agree that there are several steps to take before disavowing.
Before I jump into all this work, i'm still looking for clarity that I actually have an anchor over optimization problem (or if it's something else). Based on the March 22, 2012 note above...and also the fact that I don't have anything in the Manual Actions of my GWT, is it reasonable to think I have a penguin anchor problem given that commercial anchors comprise ~25% of my backlinks? Especially since I remain indexed and Google seems to be penalizing me for the keywords that were over-anchored?
-
Hi Lincoln,
I'd be cautious using tools that automatically generate a list for disavowing links. Instead take a day or two and go over it manually, filter out those which do look spammy. (You can use Opensiteexplorer to export your backlinks.)
Here you have a very good article from Modestos Siotos, on how to conduct a link audit.
Gr., Keszi

Well, the story is becoming clearer now. I just looked back in my GWT and found a message (see attachment) from Google on March 22, 2012. I suspect this is related to over optimized backlink anchor text (probably mostly lots of anchor optimized comments on other photography related blogs).
I plan on using this tool (http://cognitiveseo.com/blog/3524/the-fastest-most-accurate-unnatural-link-detection-case-study/) to discover/disavow links. Does that sound like a good approach? Can I submit the same disavow tool to Bing and Yahoo, or just Google?
This is the first and only time that I've received a warning. Does that mean anything? Also, I am able to rank pretty well for long tail keywords (it kinda seems like the penalty is most severe on the anchors that were over optimized?), so it's not like I've been banned...do I have to do a reconsideration request or will the disavow be a good step?
-
Thank you so much Miriam! Yes, I was so concerned about getting a high non-local ranking that I lost focus of some basic local optimization.
i just bought Yoast's local plugin to add NAP with a map etc..should I add this to my homepage? Or only my contact page?
i have 25 reviews on WeddingWire (which Moz ranks as a top citation source for wedding photographers), but none of those are showing on my Google Local page. How would I fix that?
-
Hi Lincoln!
I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you're having! I want to preface what I'm going to write with my opinion that your scenario is likely to require a full audit by an SEO who knows both traditional and local SEO. The Moz Q&A Forum is a great place to get at-a-glance opinions on things, but should not be seen a replacement for a formal, dedicated audit of your company. So, what follows is just my at-a-glance take on this. I am not going to look at penalties - I am just going to look at this from a local perspective.
-
Your website is not locally optimized. There is no contact information. No local phone number, address, etc.
-
So, next step for me was to guess at a Philadelphia zip code and look up your business in our Check Listing tool. The only option I see as a result for your business is located in Morgantown - not Philadelphia. Is this your business:
-
If the above is your business and you are not located in Philadelphia, aiming for Philadelphia-related rankings is going to be a major uphill battle. Doubtless there is major competition from companies physically located in this city who are going to have a significant inherent edge over your business unless you can get an office in Philadelphia.
-
The Check Listing results indicate that almost no citation building has been done for the business. Of the 15 platforms this tool surveys, you have listings on just 3, so it doesn't look like much off-site local search marketing has been done.
-
Your Google+ Local page has earned 0 reviews: https://plus.google.com/107698063096203549335/about?hl=en-US
6. You should research local algo changes that may have occurred around the time that you noticed any drops.
So, in just a minute or two, I'm seeing some important things that, in and of themselves, could explain a lack of visibility for the locally-focused searches you're hoping to rank for. The site is not optimized locally and isn't being marketed locally and the physical location is a big question mark. This is just a start, of course, but I hope it's helpful to get started thinking about these basics that you'll need to begin addressing in your marketing efforts.
Here are some links I think you'll find really helpful:
http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors
It's really smart of you to be investigating all of this, Lincoln, and I'm wishing you good luck!
-
-
So I think I'm going to revisit the content for all of my blog posts. When I'm rewriting them, does anyone have a guide as to how often I should use words that mention the major keywords that I want my homepage to rank for? i have Yoast's plugin to help me with ranking that blog post, but I'm a little lost when it comes to how often I should mention overall homepage words (in my case, Philadelphia wedding photographers).
i also think I'm going to get rid of a lot of old posts that I don't care about.
Any other suggestions based on the graph above?
-
Thanks Keszi...here's how Panguin looks for me.
-
Hi Lincoln,
First of all, I would try to investigate what happened, why you have dropped out of top 5 to position ~#45. If you take a look at the Moz's Google Algo update page: http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change and you compare it with your Google Analytics/Google Webmasters Tools data, do you see any specific update that might have hurt your rankings?
If you want to be quick with this, there is a great tool Panguin.
Before I would jump into troubleshooting the other questions, I would try to figure out what went wrong in the first place. Sometimes resolving old issues on the site can help the success of future efforts. So it might be worth a try.
I hope it has helped, Gr. Keszi

Matching page for keyword doesn't show in search
Hello! I'm having an issue with my website Rooms Index, the website is in Hebrew so I'll provide examples in English for better understandings. When I'm searching Rooms by Hour in Haifa, google doesn't show the intended category page which is this, instead it shows my homepage in the results, this happens only for certain areas, while other areas are working well such as Tel aviv. For example if I searched day use in Las Vegas it'd show me the Las Vegas page dayuse.com/las-vegas, but searching for Brooklyn I'd only see dayuse.com. the pages are indexed and I can find them if I search site:roomsindex.co.il what could cause such problem?

Using posts to make static pages - A best practice or a bad idea?
I have started working with a few law firms this year. They already have websites and I am doing various marketing tasks such as copywriting, redesigns, and, of course, SEO. In a couple of cases I was surprised to find that they had made the pages describing their various practice areas post content. I'm not sure why. But I suspect that the idea might have been to have the phrase: /practice-areas/ as a part of their URL. I didn't really like the idea of treating pages like posts. It seems a bit like working the system. But apart from that, wouldn't pages have a higher value as "permanent" content? As posts - their publish date has more weight, right? And they'd get old? But maybe the previous developers were on to something and the category/post approach to listing practice areas is the way to go? I am starting a new site for a new firm and I'd like to feel more confident about the right structure to choose for this kind of website before I start. Does anybody know the right answer? Thanks!

Call Tracking Best Practises for General SEO
Hey folks, So I'm aware of the importance of consistent citations, and the mayhem call tracking numbers have been known to cause in regards to that in that past. So just wanted some up to date clarification on these two things: Local SEO isn't strictly speaking a big deal for us as we supply a software and as such are technically global. I'm presuming consistent citations are still worth aiming for though, and will help increase general authority as well? Let me know if I'm totally wrong about that! What's the best practise set up for call tracking, given that your main NAP number you'd obviously want hardcoded somewhere, alongside showing your dynamic numbers to relevant visitors. Apologies for any ignorance, as always any help and advice is muchos appreciato.

If we are a local based business, what is the best approach to tracking keywords? Shall we be micro tracking?
we are a local based business and we only have one physical property but we service a 15 mile radius (people within a 15 mile radius will use our services) when it comes to keyword tracking and monitoring should we just be looking at the 3 main local towns or should we go out to the villages around our area too? at what level shall we be micro tracking? do we go to such a micro level for tracking keywords for all the villages which creates a lot of keywords for the locations? what is the best approach?

Which is better for Local & National coupons --1000s of Indexed Pages per City or only a Few?
Not sure where this belongs.. I am developing a coupons site for listing local coupons and national coupons (think Valpak+RetailMeNot), eventually in all major cities, and am VERY concerned about how many internal pages to let google 'follow' for indexing, as it can exceed 10,000 per city. Is there a way to determine what the optimal approach is for internal paging/indexing BEFORE I actually launch the site (it is about ready except for this darned url question, which seems critical) Ie can I put in searchwords for google to determine which ones are most worthy to have their own indexed page? I'm a newbie sort of, so please put answer in simple terms. I'm one person and have limited funds and need to find the cheapest way to get the best organic results for each city that I cover. Is there a generic answer? One SEO firm told me the more variety the better. Another told me that simple is better, and use content on the simple pages to get variety. So confused I decided to consult the experts here! Here's the site concept: **FOR EACH CITY: ** User inputs location: Main city only(ie Houston), or 1 of 40 city regions(suburb, etc..), or zip code, or zip-street combo, OR allow gps lookup. A miles range is defaulted or chosen by the user. After search area is determined, user chooses 1 of 6 types of coupons searches: 1. Online shopping with national coupon codes, choice of 16 categories (electronics, health, clothes, etc) and 100 subcategories (computers, skin care products, mens shirts) These are national offers for chains like Kohls, which do not use the users location at all. 2. Local shopping in-store coupons, choice of same 16 categories and 100 subcategories that are used for online shopping in #1 (mom & pop shoe store or local chain offer). The results will be within the users chosen location and range. 3. Local restaurant coupons, about 60 subcategories (pizza, fast food, sandwiches). The results are again within the users chosen location and range. 4. Local services coupons, 8 categories (auto repair, activities,etc..) and around 200 subcategories (brakes, miniature golf, etc..). Results within users chosen location and range. 5. Local groceries. This is one page for the main city with coupons.com grocery coupons, and listing the main grocery stores in the city. This page does not break down by sub regions, or zip, etc.. 6. Local weekly ad circulars. This is one page for the main city that displays about 50 main national stores that are located in that main city. So, the best way to handle the urls indexed for the dynamic searches by locations, type of coupon, categories/subcats, and business pages The combinations of potential urls to index are nearly unlimited: Does the user's location matter when he searches for one thing (restaurants), but not for another (Kohls)? IF so, how do I know this? SHould I tailor indexed urls to that knowledge? Is there an advantage to having a url for NATIONAL cos that ties to each main city: shopping/Kohls vs shopping/Kohls/Houston or even shopping/Kohls/Houston-suburb? Again, I"m talking about 'follow' links for indexing. I realize I can have google index just a few main categories and subcats and not the others, or a few city regions but not all of them, etc.. while actually having internal pages for all of them.. Is it better to have 10,000 urls for say coupon-type/city-region/subcategory or just one for the main city: main-city/all coupons?, or something in between? You get the gist. I don't know how to begin to figure out the answers to these kinds of questions and yet they seem critical to the design of the site. The competition: sites like Valpak, MoneyMailer, localsaver seem to favor the 'more is better' approach, with coupons/zipcode/category or coupons/bizname/zipcode But a site like 8coupons.com appears to have no indexing for categories or subcategories at all! They have city-subregion/coupons and they have individual businesses bizname/city-subregion but as far as I see no city/category or city-subregion/category. And a very popular coupons site in my city only has maincity/coupons maincity/a few categories and maincity/bizname/coupons. Sorry this is so long, but it seems very complicated to me and I wanted to make the issue as clear as possible. Thanks, couponguy

Location pages for Landing pages
So i have a client for carpet cleaning in Seattle, but he doesn't just want to rank up for "Carpet Cleaning Seattle" he wants to rank up for sub locations such as Lynnwood Carpet Cleaning

Kirkland Carpet Cleaning
Kenmore Carpet Cleaning
Issaquah Carpet Cleaning
Everett Carpet Cleaning
Edmonds Carpet Cleaning
Bothell Carpet Cleaning
Bellevue Carpet Cleaning
Auburn Carpet Cleaning
Orting Carpet Cleaning
Monroe Carpet Cleaning
Milton Carpet Cleaning
Marysville Carpet Cleaning
Lacey Carpet Cleaning Right now the designer he hired to develop the website has created a separate web page for each of these location pages. the reason being he services all these areas and wants to rank up for all of these areas with basically the same keyword... SEO is fairly simple to me when it comes to straight forward small sized projects or targeting specific services in one set location. But with all these algorithmic changes I worry that this is not something Google may want to see.. What is my best bet with this project, and what SEO methods would you recommend for a site that has 40 total landing pages all with similar keywords just different locations?0 -
Bing ranking a weak local branch office site of our 200-unit franchise higher than the brand page - throughout the USA!?
We have a brand with a major website at ourbrand.com. I'm using stand-ins for the actual brandname. The brand is a unique term, has 200 local offices with sites at ourbrand.com/locations/locationname, and is structured with best practices, and has a well built sitemap.xml. The link profile is diverse and solid. There are very few crawl errors and no warnings in Google Webmaster central. Each location has schema.org markup that has been checked with markup validation tools. No matter what tool you use, and how you look at it t's obvious this is the brand site. DA 51/100, PA 59/100. A rouge franchisee has broken their agreement and made their own site in a city on a different domain name, ourbrandseattle.com. The site is clearly optimized for that city, and has a weak inbound link profile. DA 18/100, PA 21/100. The link profile has low diversity and generally weak. They have no social media activity. They have not linked to ourbrand.com <- my leading theory. **The problem is that this rogue site is OUT RANKING the brand site all over the USA on Bing. **Even where it makes no sense at all. We are using whitespark.ca to check our ranking remotely in other cities and try to remove the effects of local personalization. What should we do? What have I missed?
