Is minor duplicate content on my website okay?
-
I know duplicate content across multiple websites is not a good thing, however I've always wondered about minor duplicate content on your own website. I know its good practice to have unique content on each page but what about the little stuff. For example on our website certain related pages share the same content in a right sidebar. Such as links to pdf leaflets, or "you can read our blog etc" . Is there a minimum number of repeated words required before its flagged as duplicate content? Another example is a customer gave two testimonials for two of our employees - the testimonials were identical other than the employee names - if these were posted on separate pages is it a problem for the site as a whole or for both those individual pages?
Thanks

Thanks for the responses guys! I appreciate your help. As for the duplicate testimonial LindaLV, I agree with you completely. But as there are over 100 employee profiles with customer testimonials on chances are slim that anyone would notice. I know its best practice to have them different anyway but my employers would rather it just went up than taking the time to bother their client or re-write it themselves they wouldnt care much for best practice, user experience etc.

Hello,
my opinion is that as soon as each url offers always some unique content to be indexed, it should be ok. I don´t see the sense of having two urls with exactly the same content, but doesn´t seems to be your case

Yes, many sites have repeated information in sidebars, footers and so on--that is not a problem. I would wonder about the testimonials, though. Not from an SEO viewpoint but from a user viewpoint. If I read two testimonials that were identical except for the name, I would not give either one much credence. (But that's a small issue.)

Per Google, "Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar." (from: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359) Substantive meaning most or nearly all of the content on two pages being the same. The examples they provide bear this out.
- Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
- Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
- Printer-only versions of web pages
In each case they're talking about URLs that would be nearly identical, not the blocks of navigation or sidebar content that are common through out a site. Your website should be ok.

Duplicate Content Indentification Tools
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good tool that can identify which elements on a page are duplicated content? I use Moz Analytics to determine which pages have the duplicated content on them, but it doesn't say which pieces of text or on-page elements are in fact considered to be duplicate. Thanks Moz Community in advance!

Duplicate Content - Category Pages 2+
I have my Wordpress SEO settings to deindex past page 1 of each category. However, Google Webmasters is selling me I have 210 pages with duplicate title tags. My site tanked last weekend and I don't know if it was Google Panda or what. I have been getting some fantastic backlinks and it seems like they just decided to disregard all of them as I am completely off the SERPs. Is this duplicate content a contributing factor? How can I get google to deindex my category pages past page 1? (I do need the first page to index as that does bring me organic traffic) Thanks.

Duplicate Page Content Should we 301 - Best Practices?
What would be the best way to avoid a Duplicate Page Content for these type of pages. Our website generates user friendly urls, for each page..
On-Page Optimization | | 365ToursSafaris
So it is the same exact page, just both versions of the url work.. Example: http://www.safari365.com/about-africa/wildebeest-migration http://www.safari365.com/wildebeest-migration I don't think adding code to the page will work because its the same page for the incorrect and correct versions of the page. I don't think i can use the URL parameter setting because the version with /about-africa/ is the correct (correct as it it follows the site navigation) I was thinking of using the htaccess to redirect to the correct version.. Will that work ? and does it follow best Practices ? any other suggestions that would work better ?0 -

Duplicate Title question
Thanks Mozzers in advance for any insight into what I'm sure is a basic SEO question. I'm working with a resort in the great state of Maine. Their home page title reads Maine Resorts, Resorts in Maine, (company name). The site has about 400 URL's and over half of the URL's utilize the first keyword phrase of the home page title, "Maine Resorts." Predominately, I find them used on the Accommodations pages (pages that describe each room with a picture) which I would label as deeper pages and non-conversion type pages. The page titles themselves are not exact duplicates of the Home Page Title but might read something like "Maine Resorts, Company Name, Accommodation Listing." My concern is that the heavy use of "Maine Resorts" as the first phrase in over 200 plus pages might be competing against the home page and pulling the home page ranking down. Thanks for any help given!
