What to do about pages I have deleted?
-
I have been working through the dead links on my page and recreating the page with new content for those pages that it still makes sense to have on the site.
But I have a few that were just changes of the title, spelling mistakes or other ways of saying the same thing
In other words I created a page called "areas of the UK we cover" but decided to change it to "areas covered" However, I must have created links to this page and now it is a dead link with a page authority of 19
I think it would be spammy to have two pages, one called "areas covered" and the other called "areas of the UK we cover. It's not a disallow in Robots.txt because the page does not exist
Please note I do not have access to the header to add code for a 301 redirect.
I'm still using webs.com but not for new sites.
I also have a page called singing telegrams london, that I changed from singagrams london.
These are two words for the same thing but they are two very different keywords would it be ok to recreate this page and create content for singagrams london.
Help is much appreciated

I agree with Thomas and Anthony, the best solution would be to move to a hosting provider that can give you the functionality you need. I'm not crazy about using meta refresh tags for anything, but Anthony's solution of using rel=canonical with the meta refresh would be an easier workaround than either redirecting through DNS or changing hosting providers.
Specifically regarding your singagrams/singing telagrams page: I would not recommend creating a second page about the same content just to target variations of a keyword. That would be a pretty classic example of doorway pages, which Google has said they will be cracking down on. Instead, work to build the topical authority of the existing page for both singagrams and singing telegrams.

Given the technical limitations you have with Webs.com I would suggest recreating the page on your site so it can be accessed and adding a canonical tag if they allow you to add items to the meta-header. See the syntax below. Point the href to the new page you want to rank.
Then on the old page do a redirect after 10 seconds to the correct page. That way it doesn't look like you are trying to do cloaking or something shady.
hope this helps,
Anthony

I would move your website off of webs
- you need to either send the page to a proper 404 or better yet 410 destination if you can not 301 redirect. I'm assuming that by deleting the page you can accomplish a 404.
- Webs is not the place where you would want to host anything of any value to you. Apparently 301 redirects are requested feature still not offered see this.
http://support.webs.com/entries/54236074-301-redirect
I have given some information below on DNS redirects however I would strongly suggest moving to either WordPress or hubspot it is more of a issue with the software you're running then anything else.
"In other words I created a page called "areas of the UK we cover" but decided to change it to "areas covered" However, I must have created links to this page and now it is a dead link with a page authority of 19"
yes it would be confusing if you provided to areas covered unless the site has something to do with areas covered outside the United Kingdom still I would keep one area covered page.
However I am not familiar with webs even after searching the http://www.webs.com/help-and-contact pages
I have not found anything that would make me believe hosting site of any importance would be wise on that system. For this very reason. Now let me explain you can do redirects via DNS
- Not as easy or fast because it's not on the server but it is possible. Companies like Dyn.com they have two methods DynECT & Dyn standard DNS the price difference is quite a bit and both do the job if you choose standard you can create redirects using what they call "webhop" other companies that you can accomplish this with our NSOne.net and DNS made easy all allow you to create redirects.
- this is an explanation of how 301 can be done via DNS and will accomplish the job http://help.dnsmadeeasy.com/spry_menu/http-redirection-record-2/
- So theoretically you can buy a year worth of DNS made easy for $29 a year and start creating redirects inside your DNS. Where I would then 301 redirect the areas covered UK page to the new areas covered page
- considering that you care about this website I would look into something like WordPress as a replacement. If you're worried about ease-of-use is very easy to pick up and capable of doing almost anything.
- You can even get a managed WordPress hosting provider for $15 a month at getFlywheel.com or many other excellent managed WordPress hosting companies like kinsta Pagely & WP engine if you choose the last two you can save money via Moz.com/perks
- depending on the size of your website changing it to WordPress is really not going to be complicated unless it is something very advanced and because it is hosted and created on webs we know it is not. So the pricing would be very low to change everything.
- hubspot makes an excellent CMS and will migrate your entire site over Conversion to they start at $200 a month though and offer and excellent platform for a small business that wants to succeed New Rainmaker is another one that comes to mind.
I hope this helps,
Thomas

Hiding elements of the page
Hi, Does hiding elements of the page have a negative effect on SEO? The reason I ask is I am using a Wordpress theme however in options if I disable a certain element of the theme that is printed on the page it simply hides it from the user using CSS but it still exists in the code. Could the search engine see this as bad? E.g. like you are trying to keyword stuff by hiding keywords in the page? Thanks.

How/when do you trim your article pages?
Hi all, I wanted to ask what have you all done to your article section that has made a difference to the site's SEO performance? What's the criteria for deciding which articles top cut or 301 redirect to the main page For example: 1. you have a slightly irrelevant article to your website topic, low conversions, but a lot of quality links to page, but no primary keywords in article title. 2. You have a slightly irrelevant article to your website, low conversion, but a lot of quality links AND you have your site's primary keywords in article title 3. You have a relevant topic to the site, but low engagement and low conversions Thanks for all your help!

I was thinking I would because then I could add more pictures and expand on the topic and try to get an "A" grade on each page. I'm not sure how I could rank a page if I have 35 services listed on the page. That would be an awfully big H1! Suggestions?0 -
