Are directory websites still worth considering?
-
Hi Mozzers,
What are people's opinions on directory website?
As standard, we would always attempt to get our clients listed on reputable generic directories such as Google My Business and Yelp, and then directories that are relevant to the industry in which a company operates.
Do you think this is the right approach to take?
-
Local directories are good for local companies. Yes that is a good approach. You may want to look at Yext whitelabel package for marketing this service to your local clients.

Hey Ryan,
Thanks for the response - really appreciate it!

Local directories are certainly stronger than ever with their integration into mobile, mapping results, and GPS targeted user behavior, so by all means consider using local listings wherever applicable with a client.
Directory pages on industry specific websites are also a great place for links and create topical associations and trust even if they're not keyword targeted.
General all inclusive directories have fallen by the wayside over the years as user behavior has gone less from something akin to tv-like channel surfing to targeted search and acquire usage. But like you mention in your question, and above, in the right context, directories are still strong. Just the more focused the better. Cheers!

Back link from site with DA of 72 to a website domain. Clicking on the link redirects to our website not the attended one.
Hi,
Link Building | | JIMBO16
I've ran a back link check and discovered a good back link to a site which then gets redirected back to my company's website. I have a feeling that an old SEO agency has purchased a small website which has a decent link back from a relevant organisation with a high Domain authority and then redirects the domain to our website to get the link juice. What are your thought on this? Is this really bad practise and possibly damaging? Thanks, Jim0 -
Making a custom web directory
I am wondering if it is beneficial to launch a social bookmarking website based on Semantic Scuttle [http://semanticscuttle.sourceforge.net/demo] in order to gain inbound links. For the sake of example, say my industry is ebooks. I would of course add links to all of my products to the site. In addition, I would want to add links to competitors products to the site to make the site actually useful and not look like spam. On the face of it, is this a good idea? Secondly, I of course wouldn't want to be helping out competitors, so would any of these actions be advisable? add nofollow links to all links except those pointing to my site. ads or featured listings pointing to my links. I make it so only voted on links are dofollow. Thus, competitors could actually get links from my site. Naturally, I would vote on all my submissions. The idea of the site would actually be to provide a meaningful service. Once it's done I would want to get people linking to it. Any advice? Thanks! Edit: I added scenario #3 which I think is probably the best option, if this is even a good idea. I would also make some static content to really make this a good resource!

Still seeing older links
We have recently updated all our product page titles on our website to something more descriptive for our Google Shopping campaign. This was what was recommended we do by the folks at Google. Doing this causes all of the URLs for the products to reflect this change. The structure is as such: https://ourwebsite.com/bulbs/product_id/title. Now when Moz provides us with our weekly crawl report we see a load of duplicate page content errors (roughly the same amount as the number of product pages). I don't quite see this as a coincidence so it must be a consequence of having updated the titles. My question is why is Moz still crawling our older links? We no longer link to any of the pages with the older URLs so why are they conflicting?

Is there any link building value to design showcase websites?
I am interested to hear people's opinions on this. We are launching a microsite that is for branding purposes only, no real SEO strategy beyond optimizing for branded terms on it. However the design of the site is strong in my opinion. I think it could get picked up by "sites of the day" websites, showcases, galleries, etc. Would there be SEO benefit of in being featured on those sites since they tend to be curated lists of only the best sites and therefore editorial links? Or is there danger of those not being seen as quality links that could get you into trouble?

How can I find all the outbound links from a website domain?
I want to find all the outbound links (basically whatever comes in tag) from a domain (say www.abc.com) as well as all the subdomains under it (say abc.com/a etc). Open Site Explorer provides the inbound links from a website but does not provide any functionality to get all the outbound links from a website. Is it possible to do? Thanks in advance. One page website SEO
Can a one page website rank well with the right SEO? I am building a new site so it is best to put the content related to two or three related items on one page or create seperate pages? Surely by creating just one page I can put all my link building efforts into improving the authority of that page as opposed to spreading my time over 3?

Has anyone done any real research about paid directories?
Hi Guys Im doing a little link building and in the industry Im working in there are quite a few directories....most offer free inclusion as long as you link back to them. This process can be slow due to the number of people trying to get listed. Also most offer a "express service" whereby you can get your site reviewed and uploaded faster if you pay a nominal fee circa £15. I'm not refering to any old directories these are directories which are industry specific and related to my site, however they are not confined to the country I am in (UK) but extend world wide So that got me thinking has anyone actually done any conclusive research which suggests that either A) you will not get any benefit from being included in such a directory or B) that you get penalised if you do so or C) none of the above and there is some benefit. I have been using open site explore and I can see these sites are giving link juice to my competition (as far as I can tell ofcourse) I found a site with almost all of its back links from these types of directories ranking on the first page for a very competitive term (67% using Keyword Difficulty tool) Would be interested to hear your thoughts / experiences
