UPS bought a domain that was blacklisted and now we cant rank in Google
-
1. We have the site Holidayshuahin.com
Apparently Holidayshuahin.com is on a blacklist of barracuda we think this happens when somonelse owned this domain. What does this mean for our Google rankings today?
We did not optimise the site for SEO but i think it should still show up somewhere in top 100 as there are not that many pages in the niche. holidays hua hin
What should we do change domain name?
2. We have 346 links from Holtidayshuahin.com to our own site Dreamestatehuahinc.om that we do not spend time to optimize on.
Dreamestatehuahin.com Is not ranking as good as we expected could this have any thing to about these backlinks from our blacklisted holidayshuahin.com site?
Also when so many links, should i make them no follow link, what would be best for the link profile of dreamestatehuahin.com in context of links from holidayhuahin.com
Look forward for your answers thank you

Thanks Brandan!
I change the link as recommended to nofollow and anchor text to holidayshuahin.com
But what do you think about the 308 links i send from Dreamestaethuahin.com menu to Holidayshuahin.com if HOLIDAYSHUAHIN somehow recieved a penelty than it might be best not to link at all from menu.
Instead i could link from menu to a page on Dreamestatehuahin.com that will be the only page pointing out to Holidayshuahin.com

Thanks all 3 of you for the useful answers. I have checked in webmaster tool and there are no manual penalty on Holidayshuahin.com
This is what I think I got from your answers.
A: Holidayshuahin.com , disavow all old links to our domain. etc i found there where 55 links form and old greece website about stones kentro-petras.gr
B: Holidayshuahin.com, All the links from our own site (dreamestate) should be no follow and anchor text should be branded like holidayshuahin.com
Dreamestatehuahin.com (our main page rankings are very important)
Therefore when holidayshuahin.com in hit by a penalty would it be a good idea NOTto link from the menu of dreamestatehuahin.com ? (308 links)
Or would it be okay just to do nofollow and branded link from menu.
We have 2 other site Labuahuhin.com and Huahin24news.com where we have many link links from banners to dreamestatehuahin.com.
I not see a function in the wordpress theme where I can make the banners nofollowwould it be alright if I just use the anchor tag: dreamestatehuahin.com or do you recommend me find somone who know how to do these links nofollow.

Hey Tamir,
You have a couple of solid answers below from Ryan and Marie - I'd definitely follow their advice. I quickly ran your site through Open Site Explorer to look at all external links to your site (you can see the results here) and it looks like this is where your problem lies. You have lots of links from a small number of domains with very keyword rich anchor text. For example, every page on the http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/ site has a link to your site with 'Holiday Rentals' as the anchor text. Google is likely to see this as pretty spammy activity, especially as you have virtually no links with URL or branded anchor text.
I'd recommend cleaning up your back link profile (either adding nofollow attributes to your links or changing the anchor text if possible).

Is there a manual penalty on the domain? To tell, go to webmaster tools --> Search Traffic --> Manual Actions. If you see a penalty there then you can file for reconsideration and tell Google that you are new owners. In most cases they'll remove it.
But, if you do have unnatural links pointing to the site then you'll need to clean those up. If you're affected by the Penguin algorithm (which is similar to a manual penalty, but completely machine run) then the only way out is to clean up the bad links and wait for a Penguin refresh.
Regarding the links between the two sites, if you've got that many of them then it may not be a bad idea to nofollow them, but no one can say for sure. If the links are there for SEO purposes (i.e. keyword anchored) then they should definitely be nofollowed.
This sounds like a complicated case though so there may be other issues as well.

Hi Tamir. Even though Google is a registrar itself and could see the change in ownership on the domain name, if there are a lot of spammy backlinks associated with Holidayshuahin.com, it'd be best to disavow them as part of your new ownership. You'll also want to register the site in GWT, Bing, etc to display new ownership, and make sure any of the old content is changed.
As far as links to and from your sites go, you'll want to make sure it's done in a reasonable manner. There's an older WBF on that here: http://moz.com/blog/interlinking-your-sites-whiteboard-friday along with a Matt Cutt's example outlined by Barry Scwartz here: http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-linking-20-domains-together-likely-a-cross-linking-scheme-167089. Those should give you enough guidance to right the ship. Cheers!

301 Redirect Only Home Page/Root Domain via Domain Registrar Only
Hi All, I am really concerned about doing a 301 redirect. This is my situation: Both Current and New Domain is registered with a local domain registrar (similar to GoDaddy but a local version) Current Domain: Servers are pointing to Wix servers and the website is built and hosted with Wix I would like to do a 301 redirect but would like to do it in the following way with a couple of factors to keep in mind: 99% of my link are only pointed to the home page/root domain only. Not to subdirectories. New Domain: I will register this with wix with a new plan but keep the exact sitemap and composition of current website and launch with new domain. Current Domain: I want to change server pointing to wix to point to local domain registrar servers. Then do a 301 redirect for only the home page/root domain to point to the new domain listed with wix. So 301 is done via local registrar and not via Wix. Another point to mention is it will also change from Http to Https as well as a name change. Your comments on the above will be greatly appreciated and as to whether there is risk in trying to do a 301 redirect as above. Doing it as above it also cheaper if I do the 301 via the wix platform I will need to register a full new premium plan and run it concurrently to the old plan whereas if I do it as mentioned above will only have the additional domain annual fee. Look forward to your comments. Mike

Is there an automated way to test what HREFLANG is ranking for in google and yandex?
Hi everyone, We implemented HREFLANG code for our international sites. We are wondering is there an automated way to test is HREFLANG is working vs. manually browsing in each international search engine? Also, we implemented this a few days ago, and google webmaster tools stlil hasn't picked up that we have it implemented. I've heard it taking anywhere from 2-8 days. At what point would we see results. our site is http://www.datacard.com Is there an order that the site listings have to follow, for example should x-default be the last item listed? Thanks, Laura

HELP! How do I get Google to value one page over another (older) page that is ranking?
So I have a tactical question and I need mozzers. I'll use widgets as an example: 1- My company used to sell widgets exclusively and we built thousands of useful, branded unique pages that sell widgets. We have thousands of pages that are ranking for widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-sale. (These pages have been live for almost 2 years) 2- We've shifted our focus to now renting widgets. We have about 100 pages focused on renting the same branded widgets. These pages have unique content and photos and can be found at widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-rent. (These pages have been live for about 2-3 months) The problem is that when someone searches just for the brand name, the "for sale" pages dramatically outrank the "for rent" pages. Instead, I want them to find the "for rent" page. I don't want to redirect traffic from the "for sale" pages because someone might still be interested in buying (although as a company, we are super focused on renting). Solutions? "nofollow" the "for sale" pages with the idea that Google will stop indexing "for sale" and start valuing "for rent" over it? Remove "for sale" from sitemap. Help!!

Homepage not ranking for main keyword, all other pages ranking slightly for their own keyword phrases.
Dear Mozzers, We have an ecommerce website (www.pashmina-boutique.com), we want to rank the homepage for the keyword "pashmina". Problem is, we are nowhere to be found, not even in the top 100 search results of Google. It is indexed, we have no crawl errors, except that we had some problems with our hosting (503's), the crawler of Google bumped in a few of those. And we are fixing it. Our other pages, e.g. (http://www.pashmina-boutique.com/15-white-pashminas) ranks for "white pashminas" 24th and "white cashmere pashminas" 23rd. We have done no linkbuilding, in Majestic, you can check that. We have been offline for a long time (over 6 months) and about 3 weeks ago, we did a redesign (SEO). We relaunched, everything is looking fine except the homepage isn't ranking for the main keyword. Could you guys check it out? Is it over-optimization? It can't be Penguin, Panda would be a surprise too. Or do we still have to wait for the monthly Panda data-refresh? We are currently busy with this issue, once this is solved - that the homepage is ranking - we will start linkbuilding. Mr.1000

Multiple domain level redirects to unique sub-folder on one domain...
Hi, I have a restaurant menu directory listing website (for example www.menus.com). Restaurant can have there menu listed on this site along with other details such as opening hours, photos ect. An example of a restaurant url might be www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza. A feature i would like to offer is the ability for Bob's pizza to use the menus.com website listing as his own website (let assume he has no website currently). I would like to purchase www.bobspizza.com and 301 redirect to www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza Why?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | blackrails
So bob can then list bobspizza.com on his advertising material (business cards etc, rather than www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza). I was considering using a 301 redirect for this though have been told that too many domain level redirects to one single domain can be flagged as spam by Google. Is there any other way to achieve this outcome without being penalised? Rel canonical url, url masking? Other things to note: It is fine if www.bobspizza.com is NOT listed in search results. I would ideally like any link juice pointing to www.bobspizza.com to pass onto www.menus.com though this is a nice to have. If it comes at the cost of being penalised i can live without the link juice from this. Thanks0 -
When you buy a domain or website, does that trigger a fresh look by Google?
I recently purchased a domain and the corresponding website. For as far as I could tell, in the 12 months prior to my purchase, the site was well optimized within Google and had over 40 search terms on page 1 of Google in a really competitive space (lending-related). When I made the purchase, the domain was transferred from seller's GoDaddy account and into my GoDaddy account and I placed privacy protection on the domain. We did not move the hosting of the site--I took over his hosting account. And I did not make any significant changes to the website. About 1 week later, the site was totally removed from Google's index and I received notice in Google Webmaster Tools that the site may violate Google's quality guidelines. I filed reconsideration request telling Google that I was the new owner and that if there were any violations, they were caused by old owner. One week later, I got note back from Google saying they had received my reconsideration request and if they think issues are cured, then they will reindex the site. That was over a week ago and so seemingly they are not putting it back. My question is this: Does Google somehow automatically know when domains change hands and does this cause them to manually review sites? The site in question was aggressively optimized but I don't understand what would have caused Google to take action on the site when they did. In other words, if they were going to take action, why wouldn't they have done it in the prior 12 months or does the domain transfer put the site into some queue that makes them review it? BTW, the site in question has a SEOMoz domain authority grade of 85 and still is showing up as PR 5 Thanks very much for your time and consideration
