Back links off the back of a paid sponsorship deal
-
Hey Mozzers,
I am in need of a bit of advice please?
I work for a Gyms chain in the UK and we are sponsoring a major sporting event next month.
As part of the deal we get a dedicated webpage and backlink from their high authority website.
We do not have a logo and multiple backlinks in the footer on every page of their website, so to my knowledge Google will not necessarily regard this as a paid backlink right?
Is there anything in the algorithm that is able to distinguish between the aforementioned backlink and a natural one?
Just wondering if our domain is linking to receive the equity or not?
Regards
Ben

Hi Ben,
Sponsoring events is a great link building tactic. As the link will come as a side-effect of the sponsorship rather than from direct payment, Google will not penalise you for this. Imagine the reverse - companies would be far less likely to sponsor events, support charities etc if Google were to start penalising them.
Here are a few posts you can look to for reassurance:

We will be supplying the content for our dedicated page on their webpage so will be completely unique and relevant to our domain's subject.
Thanks for your reply.

I'd be more concerned about duplicate content, actually. I've seen may instances like this where the event website simply grabs content off your website and links back to you with no regard for duplicates. That's the only thing I see the algorithm picking up. I wouldn't be concerned it would be tagged as a paid link from your description, especially since the link isn't what you are paying for, it's the sponsorship. You can see numerous examples of this when you look at sponsor profiles on all kinds of websites - even SEO conferences
The link is a benefit for sure, but not the primary thing you are paying for.
This article from Search Engine Watch gets pretty detailed on what Matt Cutts considers a paid link: http://searchenginewatch.com/sew/news/2332787/matt-cutts-shares-4-ways-google-evaluates-paid-links#

Other websites copy content and giving a link back
Hi, I've just noticed a few back links in Google Search Console, I was excited. But when I saw the backlinks, 2 other websites that had completely copied my content and then gave a backlink to my website. Is this bad for SEO and would google penalise my website for this?

Back links from sites like Wix & Wordpress.
Sorry for the newb question. If you get a back-link from a blogger on wordpress will you get any of the 'link juice' from the platform. i.e) from the Wordpress site. I'm talking about bloggers whose URL's would be like...www.wordpress.com/bloggersitename I imagine not, but it would be good to know for sure. Isaac.

Link Exchange
Hi everyone, I just started working for a client in a new niche. After reviewing the backlink profiles of his competitors I can see that the top sites are using a ton of link exchanges. They are from really spammy sites too. The kind that will link to anyone that provides a link back. Anyone else seeing much of this?

Back to Basics: Lets talk link directories :)
Hi, Ok, bit of a muddy subject for me because lots say it's a good method, great for getting things started and some say it's a complete waste of time and it's spammy. But I guess the difference between the two opinions is quality! I have stopped using directories but think it's time to add some diversity to my link profile. In the past I have used this - http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html What are your thoughts on that list? Does it actually fall into the spammy category and I should be looking for a much higher quality list. Cheers

Buying links
I have 2 websites to pay monthly to gain links from, number 1 is on the homepage of a directory, it has a PA of 90 and DA of 88.
Link Building | | myloseo
the link will be on the right hand side along with 55 other featured sites.
these links are there throughout the whole site. number 2 is from a website with 20 max sponsored links on a page and will be one of the sub pages on the site with a PA of 74. How valuable if any would these links be? My current pa on the site i wish to send the links to is 26 Can i expect my PA to go up by much? Also i currently have 317 links from 7 root domains on my site will this effect the rank of the paid links? Thanks in advance0 -
What constitutes a "paid link"?
I know that link building is one of the more important tools for great ranking and know that "paid links" may hurt a sites ranking. How do I know if a company offering link building will be classified as "paid links"
