Are 1x Event pages considered thin content? Should they be archived or redirected?
-
Since past event pages will become stale after the event, should they be keep alive and archived with only a link from a couple of places (for instance the main event page and html sitemap).
Or should they be "retired" and redirected to the main event page if they are really no longer needed?
They would probably be considered thin content because they won't have much traffic and will have very few links pointing to them. Right?
Thanks. Inquiring minds want to know...

Keep them or remove them, don't redirect them unless they have external links, you want to keep things simple,
if you do remove them. make sure you remove all links pointing to them from your own site, you don't want broken links.

You may have already gotten your answer from previous responses, but if you haven't: what sorts of events do you have pages for? Is it possible to have one URL (since you mention the main event page) which changes content based on what is coming up next? This may make the process easier.

Hi,
If it's really for temporary events that have a limited life you could use the unavailable-after metatag - which indicates until which date the event should remain in the index. If it's about recurring events - I would do like Egol says.
More info on the tag can be found here:Â http://googleblog.blogspot.be/2007/07/robots-exclusion-protocol-now-with-even.html & here is an interview with Matt Cutts on the tag (the context is e-commerce - but it could as well apply to temporary events):Â http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-seo-advice-unavailable-e-commerce-products-186882

If these events are recurring, like once per year. Then I would make a permanent page for them.
If that event is featured on other websites then I would make sure that the next upcoming event is always on the page and always reflected in the title tag. People will search for it with the year.... "2015 Spring Widget Dealer's Convention"  The bigger the event the more important this is.
I attend a couple of events regularly and I search for them a few times each year. I can't remember the URL of their website so I just google the name of the event. I want to mark next year's event on my calendar, I want to see what they have on the preliminary schedule, I want see a final schedule, I need a map, I am looking for deals on lodging. Event sites can get multiple visits from attendees each year. Lots of websites have info on this event but only one of them does a great job. I remember the URL when I see it in the SERPs. It is also usually the only URL that has the current year in the title tag. Other webmasters doing update their title tags promptly or don't include the year. That's a mistake because google suggest shows a year.
A friend of mine maintains a massive event calendar with all of the events in this industry listed in chronological order on a huge LONG page. He gets tons of traffic because he is the only person who puts this work into it. Lots of people know his site because of this calendar. Lots of websites link to it. I have an industry news blog and link to his events page every time I see that he has updated it (about six times per year).  I have a robot monitoring it  Lots of people click from my blog to his page every time I list it. Events pages can be valuable if you do a great job on them.

It might depend on how large the event is. For really large scale things (sporting events, annual conferences, etc.) it makes more sense for there to be an archive of some sorts. With more iterative events that are collectively focused on topical awareness, I'd be more inclined to redirect those page sot which ever even in the series is most current.

What are best page titles for sub-domain pages?
Hi Moz communtity, Let's say a website has multiple sub-domains with hundreds and thousands of pages. Generally we will be mentioning "primary keyword & "brand name" on every page of website. Can we do same on all pages of sub-domains to increase the authority of website for this primary keyword in Google? Or it gonna end up as negative impact if Google consider as duplicate content being mentioned same keyword and brand name on every page even on website and all pages of sub domains? Thanks

Pages that did NOT 301 redirect to the new site
Hi, Is there a tool out  there that can tell me what pages did NOT 301 redirect to the new sites? I need something rather than going into google.com and typing in site:oldsite.com to see if it's still indexed and if it's not 301 redirecting.. I'm not sure if screaming frog can do that. Thanks.

301 or 404 Question for thin content Location Pages we want to remove
Hello All, I have a Hire Website with many categories and individual location pages for each of the 70 depots we operate. However, being dynamic pages, we have thousands of thin content pages. We have decided to only concentrate on our best performing locations and get rid of the rest as its physically impossible to write unique content for all our location pages for every categories. Therefore my question is. Would it cause me problems by having to many 301's for the location pages I am going to re-direct ( i was only going to send these back to the parent category page) or should I just 404 all those location pages and at some point in the future when we are in a position to concentrate on these locations then redo them with new content ? Â in terms of url numbers It would affect a few thousand 301's or 404's depending on people thoughts. Also , does anyone know what percentage of thin content on a site should be acceptable ?.. I know , none is best in an ideal world but it would be easier if there we could get away with a little percentage. We have been affected by Panda , so we are trying to tidy things up as best at possible, Any advice greatly appreciated? thanks Peter

Can pop-ups cause duplicate content issues in product pages?
Normally for ecommerce clients that have 100's of products we advise for size guides, installation guides etc to be placed as downloadable PDF resources to avoid huge blocks of content on multiple product pages. If content was placed in a popup e.g. fancybox, across multiple product pages would this be read by Google as duplicate content? Examples for this could be: An affiliate site with mutiple prices for a product and pop-up store reviews A clothing site with care and size guides What would be the best practice or setup?

How long takes to a page show up in Google results after removing noindex from a page?
Hi folks, A client of mine created a new page and used meta robots noindex to not show the page while they are not ready to launch it. The problem is that somehow Google "crawled" the page and now, after removing the meta robots noindex, the page does not show up in the results. We've tried to crawl it using Fetch as Googlebot, and then submit it using the button that appears. We've included the page in sitemap.xml and also used the old Google submit new page URL https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url Does anyone know how long will it take for Google to show the page AFTER removing meta robots noindex from the page? Any reliable references of the statement? I did not find any Google video/post  about this. I know that in some days it will appear but I'd like to have a good reference for the future. Thanks.

New Website Look/Structure - Should I Redirect or Update Pages w/ Quality Inbound Links
This questing is regarding an ecommerce website that I hand wrote(html) in 1997. Â One of the first click and buy websites, with cart/admin system that I also developed. After all this time, the Old plain HTML look just doesnt cut it. Â I just updated to XHTML w/ a very modern look, and believe the structured data will index better. Â All products and current category pages will have the identical vrls taken from the old version. Â I decided to go with the switch after manual penalty, which has since been removed... I figured now is the time to update. My big question is that over the years, a lot of my backlinks came from products/news that are either no longer relevant or just not available. Â The pages do exist, but can only be found from the Outbound Link Source. For SEO purposes, I have thought a few things I can do but can't decide which one is the best choice. Â Any Insight or suggestions would be Awesome! 1. Redirect the old link to the most relevant page in my current catalog. 2. Add my new header/footer to old page(this will add a navigation bar w/ brands/cats/etc) 3. Simply add a nice new image to the top of these pages linking home & update any broken/irrelevant links. Â I was also considering adding just the very top 2 inches of my header(logo, search box, phone, address) *note, some of these pages do receive some traffic. Â Nothing huge, but consider the 50+ pages, it ads up.

How can I change my website's content on specific pages without affecting ranking for specific keywords?
My client's website (www.nursevillage.com) content has not been touched for 4 years and we are currently ranking #1 for "per diem nursing". They do not want to make any changes to the site in fear that it might decrease our rankings. We want to try to use utilize that keyword ranking on specific pages (www.nursevillage.com/nv/content/careeroptions/perdiem.jsp ) ranking for "per diem nursing" and try redirecting traffic or placing some banners and links on that page to specific pages or other sites related to "per diem nursing" jobs so we can get nurses to apply to our new nursing jobs. Any advice on why "per diem nursing" is ranking so high for us and what we can change on the site without messing up our ranking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
