Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small
-
My site www.brightonsoundsystem.co.uk has been optimised for speed so I have minimised the code needed.
Now if I put it through the OSE spam analysis it has a flag for "Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small". What ratio of visible text compared to mark-up code is being used to trigger this flag. Also as this is the only flag I have is ti worth the time fixing.
-
Thanks Michael,
My gut would agree. It should be looked at in context and thanks for confirming that for me.
Doesn't help when clients look at the tool though.
-
This code ratio metric is merely one of many issues to trigger a spam "conviction". It would seem logical that if you write junk-free code and raise few to no other flags, it should be ignored.
Surely if lean code alone were a violation - there would be no Google page speed tool!
-
Sorry but how does this response help? You've just explained how the tool works which we already kinda know. I want to know how to resolve the issue or if it can be ignored.
-
PS - to all those wondering what the amount of stars under a poster's picture means......the more stars they have = the less paid work they have & more free time they have to hang out and yak!!
Ergo - the less stars you have, the busier you are!! Right, Michael ,-]

Sometimes you just have to trust your gut! Why would Google create the enormously nit picking Page Speed Tool - then penalize you for following their dictates? I draw a line at certain reasonable levels - and still rank in the top percentiles. If I were new to the game I would be torn between thinking I needed to cut more code for Google - or fatten up to pass Moz's spam-ometer!
The bandwidth load on Google has grown to sublime proportions - it is in their best interest that we pare down the code - to counteract the monumental glut of user generated fluff.

Moz tools have made me look like a guru to my client base - BUT - since I know I am not a spammer, I will choose to ignore this spam score and follow what Google clearly encourages.
-
I'm just confused!!!
Most advice appears to say get your text to code ratio over 25%, but then one of the Moz spam factors is you have too much text - they can't both be right!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!

Damned if you don't - damned if you do - what a nutty game! This is a total surprise. I have been building websites since 1994 and I continued building lean code when bandwidth went up. I don't use CMS - all hand coded asp or, less frequently, PHP. My newer sites are all in the 90's in page speed.
Now I am penalized for this? Shouldn't that message say "Congratulations, Site Mark-up is** Exceptionally **Small"?

Hey William,
This is Michael from the Moz Help Team and I'm happy to help out here! Our tool does not offer an actual ratio result so I couldn't tell you exact numbers here. Essentially we take the HTML and "clean it up" by removing certain markup like comments and white space, etc. Then we do the same for the text on the page and from there our tool trigger's a flag to indicate that the ratio is a factor but not to reveal the exact ratio.
For more information on the spam score tool, check out the most recent Whiteboard Friday in which Rand speaks to "Understanding and Applying Moz's Spam Score Metric".
I hope this helps!

That is the only spam flag I get as well. The explanation is that: "Non-spam sites tend to invest in rich user experiences with CSS, Javascript and extensive mark-up. Accordingly, a large ratio of text to mark-up is a spam signal." I am not too worried about it--a fast site makes for a very good user experience, I think.

Cheers. As you know it is quite hard work to get a good site with small mark-up. With all the fuss Google makes with Pagespeed it seem contradictory that this is a spam flag.

"Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small"
Nice work. In the opinion of many people, this is a good thing. I want my mark-up to be small too.

My site links to my clients not showing in Moz
I've got a web design business with a site that's been out there for 17 years - www.biztoolsone.com. I've got links to my clients' sites in my portfolio page. The backlinks list for my clients, when I check them in Moz, don't show the links from this site. They always showed in the list until a few months ago. The site has a DA of 59 & PA (for home page) of 50. The spam score is 0/17. I'm having a tough time telling my clients that the Moz backlinks list is accurate when that site doesn't show in the list. The same is true for www.fayettevillenc.biz - this is one I created years ago to generate backlinks. It's got a spam score of 4/17, so I'm a little more understanding of that one. Thanks for any guidance!

Why there is high DA for blank brand new sites?
I bought a domain name directly from the registrar 1 year ago. This Domain name has a very good combination of words and .biz extension. I didn't really do anything, I have default wordpress and GA installation. Now I check this site with Moz Bar and OSE and see it has 9DA and 21PA. How come? Quick Facts: Since October last year it has 1000 hits. 9 external links - all links from random domain directories/listings Any ideas how brand new domain name with no original content can have DA9 not DA1?

Open Site Explorer - Just Discovered Inbound Links
Hello Moz Forum, Thanks in advance for any help. My website was recently featured in a bunch of high DA journals and magazines. I don't see the inbound links on the open site explorer, but I do see them in recently discovered. My website's Domain Authority hasn't changed a wink. How long does it take, typically to see the recently discovered links under the inbound links portion? Thanks! j1pqVRt

My Backlinks are Coming ZERO in Open SIte Explorer
I have made many links for my website, I checked in majestic it showed me about 40. But MOZ is showing Zero. The last i remember I checked: Add noodp meta robots tag sitewide in SEO YOAST. It said it prevents search engines from using the DMOZ description for pages from this site in the search results. Also I have a NoIndex (canonical ) on category, archive, author, tag to avoid Duplicate Data. But when i see the source of my website, it shows <rel link="canonical">on every single page and post of website. Can this be the reason why MOZ is not showing any backlinks? </rel>

Open Site Explorer not reporting all 301 redirected links
Our site had over 2,000 root domains linking to it as reported in MOZ Open Site Explorer (and Google Webmaster Tools). We then changed the domain and made sure that 301 redirects were set up for all pages across the site. That was about 1 month ago. Open Site Explorer is now reporting less than 300 linking root domains. For the links that it is reporting the majority of these are being 301 redirected to the new URLs (some of them we changed the links directly). However the majority of the links that are being 301 redirected are not being reported. It is reporting most of the links coming from the old to the new domain. Google Webmaster Tools is reporting over 1,000 linking root domains to the new domain (it has a max of 1,000). We did notice that MOZ took some time to update the domain authority of the new domain. It was 1 for along time and it has now jumped up to 46 ( it was previously at 74). Maybe this is a time delay thing and eventually Open Site Explorer will report all of the 301 redirected links? It is a bit frustrating at the moment as we can't fully analyse the links to the site to try to focus on the high domain linking sites to get them to change the link directly. Also, If all links are being 301 redirected to the new domain should the authority not be close to where it was previously after one month? Our search traffic has dropped considerably since the launch of the new site and hasn't returned yet, so just wondering if the 301 redirected links pass on as much value as thre original direct links. Thanks, Damien
