Finding blog ideas and syndication
-
We've had our blog for a little under 2 years now using Magento and we've only created 48 posts. As we're in the furniture industry topics are hard to come by and we've become stuck for ideas. Sure we have researched our audience, checked Q&A's and forums to analyse what questions our audience are asking, but the ideas are limited. It's a difficult industry to find niche articles that our audience would be interested in. Could anyone suggest any ideas on how we could find interesting topics that people would actually want to share and maybe our industry influencers would be interested in featuring on their sites, does syndication still work? Duplicate content is a big 'NO NO' for Google but as long as the third party site features a rel=canonical or link back to our original post, Google wouldn't have any problem with this?

OK, what is your goal for the different articles? i.e. social sharing, ranking for particular keywords, attracting links, or something else?
Once you know the goal of particular articles you can think about how to write them to achieve those goals (noting you may want to do all the goals suggested above, just focus on one goal per article).
So lets go through some suggested titles:
Social sharing: 10 Pieces of Furniture you couldn't do without. No. 7 will blow your mind!
Keyword ranking (more natural traffic) - How to clean red wine off your settee.
Links - More detailed articles that go in more depth than the other articles, often helpful but could involve ideas from the other articles so something like - "How to know you are paying the right price for your furniture"
Whatever you do when ranking for keywords, is check out the competition and make sure your article is better, so looks nice, contains better information, and is more helpful. For more ideas, just check out what your competition is writing about, and take some ideas and just make the articles 10 times better bringing in more \ different concepts and information so it is totally original.

I've never come across this site but there are some excellent topics here that we could utilise. It does hurt the neck a little through!! Much appreciated.

Thumbs up to Tom's suggestion. That reminds me that you can also run searches in Google on Yahoo Question's repository, so something like: furniture site:answers.yahoo.com or get more specific inserting wildcards like: *** furniture * site:answers.yahoo.com** Cheers!

What about looking for the questions that people are asking about your industry, products or niche?
Try http://answerthepublic.com/ - just enter the keyword you want and which Google to crawl and it will find a list of questions that people are actively searching for (appearing in similar searches/autocomplete).
Could open up a couple of content ideas.

I've done some marketing for the a few furniture sites (manufacturers and retailers) and the best kind of posts that work best (great engagement and lots of views) are lists like : 10 living room ideas, 15 kitchen designs for increased usability, 20 bedroom office designs for small spaces, etc. You don't need a lot of text for this, just images (which you can use with attribution rights). Check houzz.com for more details.

Hi Joshua. Sometimes it's all about finding something outside of the box when it comes to being able to create content on a regular basis. Tom Dickson probably didn't find his idea for Will it Blend? in the forums or common Q&As, still he tapped into a model that let him regularly demonstrate and solidify his brand. It also doesn't have to be solely tied to your site. If you have something that people enjoy your brand name often becomes part of the search. Just a few ideas: which couch does the dog prefer? Which couch does the cat prefer? Which lounge chair wore the throw pillow better? Etc. Cheers!

Reviving a (very) old blog - is it worth shifting the content onto a new blog?
I look after a few ecommerce sites, one of them doesn't currently have a blog, we are setting up a wordpress blog now for the site. Going way back in time the site did have a blog which was on a separate Typepad domain. What I'm wondering is whether it is worth redirecting this whole blog to the new blog section of the site and copying some of the content over to the new blog as historical posts? I don't think it will be possible to redirect each individual post to a new one so it will just be a straight redirect of the old blog domain to the new one with the same (most of anyway) content. Do you think it is worth doing this for the value of this content which is relevant but dated (many of the links are now expired)? Doing this will take some time to do so it's not 'free' content we'd be getting We have a lot of new content planned out so we won't be short of content, just would be nice to have some historical content on there too Thanks

Content: Best Blogs Article
Hello, For an Ecommerce site, I think a good way to get known is to write a "Best X Blogs" article, where X is a topic in your industry, and then letting the people you link to know about the article. I got the idea from a Mozinar. My question is, how close does the X from above have to be in your niche? For example, if your product is running shoes can you write a "best athlete blogs" article? I'm worried about them reading the article, then leaving. In some smaller niches the topics closest to the product don't have much in the way of blogs out there. So how close to your niche does the Best X Blogs topic have to be?

What is my best option: 2 blogs with sub-domain. ex: http://www.BLOG.furnacefilterscanada.com and http://www.BLOG.filtrationmontreal.com one multil-language blog with a new domain linking to my online stores I would appreciate your advice on this. My goal is to increase traffic, rank better and increase sales by providing solid content on a blog. I will use Word-Press self host. I will buy a premium theme. I purchase themes from theme forest before. Do you have a favorite theme to suggest? Thank you for your help a support. BigBlaze

Best Way to Manage Multiple Blogs
Good Morning... I have multiple blogs that all relate to the same industry and products... The blogs all have unique content, they do not have duplicate content... Is there a way to share the information or link from one to the other without being seen as someone trying to manipulate anything? The goal is to keep each blog updated frequently, but I can only write so much unique content... can i somehow share the content? Please provide any feedback or advice... Thanks

Best places to get pictures for blog posts?
Well I'm really sick of reading people questions saying "help my sites been affected by penguin" So I thought I would ask something about blogging, where is the best place to find and buy pictures for blog posts? I already use Wikimedia commons. But I'm interested websites that have a bigger range that aren't too pricey. What do you recommend?

Adding External Blog Feed
I have a client who's a member of the Loopnet.com community. They have a place on their profile to add an external blog feed. Our question is does adding the RSS feed from an external blog have any SEO value or do we run into issues with duplicate content with the same blog posts published on two different websites?

What is the best way to bring a blog into my SEO strategy
We have a blog set up with Blogger and generate some great content on it. What is the best way to optimise the blog from an SEO standpoint? In particular the domain name, it is currently .blogspot.com address, is there a better way to work with that? Obviously the blog is branded with our company logo and name etc but is about the book industry. I'm basically concerned about linking people to our blog and not the website and so not getting much benefit?
