Google webmasters tools, Majestic and Ahref in a simple case study (Bad links and Good links)
-
Hey guys,
This case study started from here. A simple summary, I discover that I got +1000 backlinks from Blogspot though Google webmasters tools after making a connection with owners of these blogs which points to my new blog.
Before starting I proudly invite Thomas Zickell and Gary Lee in this discussion. I wish you accept my invitation.
Let's go to the main point, I've used Google webmaster tools so I will start with. Then Ahref which used by **Thomas **and then Majestic which used by Gary.
Take a look at "001" screenshot, you will see that Google webmaster tools discovered 1291 links points to my site.
Take another look at "002" screenshot, you will find that there are 22 domains points to my site. Most of them are good links since they are coming from websites such as Google.com, Wikipedia.org, Reddit, Shoutmeload, WordPress.org, ...etc. Beside +1000 backlinks came from Blogspot.com (blogs). Also, there's some bad links such as this one came from tacasino.com
Necessary to say that I've got some competitors and they nicely asked me to stop the competition for some keywords and I've ignored their request. So, I'm not surprised to see these bad links.
At "002" screenshot, we can see that Google didn't discover the bad links as they discovered the good links. And they discovered a lot of backlinks which not discovered by any other tools.
**Let's move to Ahref, **
I will use screenshots provided by Thomas.
At "003" screenshot, you can see Ahref report that say 457 links from 10 domains. By the way, social engagements data are wrong. I got more than zero engagements .. really.
At "004" screenshot, you can see domains points to my site, links with anchor text. Take a look at the second link you will find that it's a spammy link coming from PR2 home page since it's is over optimized. the third link is also a spammy link since it coming from a not-relevant website. Beside other bad links need to be removed. So, Ahref didn't discover all of my good links. Instead of that it discovered few good links and a lot of bad links.
In a case like this a question come needs to be answered since there are some people trying so hard to hurt my site, Do I have to remove all this bad links? Or, just links discovered by Google. Or, Google understand the case?
**Let's move to majestic, **
Gray Lee provided data from majestic which say "10 Unique Referring Domains, with 363 links, 2 domains make up a majority."
Since Gray didn't take any screenshots I will provide mine.
At "005" screenshot, you can see some of the bad links discovered by Majestic. Not all of them discovered by Ahref or Google. In the other hand, Majestic didn't discover all of my Good links.
Also, there's a miss understand I would like to explain here.
When I published the Discussion about +1000 link. Some people may think that I trying to cheat you by providing fake info and this totally wrong. I said before and I'm saying that again you are so elite and I respect you.
Also, I'm preparing for an advanced case study about this thing. If any expert would like to join me this will be great.
Thank you for reading and please feel free to share you thoughts, knowledge and experience in this Discussion.

keep in mind some companies count images as back links others do not this is an interesting comparison and I think every one of the major backing companies is critical to a full back link audit.

thank you for the invite here is an updated version of Ahrefs enterprise PDF report. http://d.pr/f/17SkP
I did not mean to imply that you are doing something wrong I meant to imply that something wrong had occurred. I do not like to blame people especially people I'd do not know. Sorry if it came off that way.
Note the changes and because Ahrefs is set to ignore subdomains and subfolders it does not calculate shares on social networks in less you use a regular URL.
When checking a domain for back links my strong opinion is that you need every tool and you need to place them together so you get the most amount of links possible. Every one of these tools has strength and weakness Moz is more similar to GWT where Ahrefs and majestic are very similar to each other. I have accounts with all these companies and would not trade that for any particular one of them.
this is an excellent comparison of the tools mentioned

Here is an excellent study by Richard Baxter of SEO gadget now builtvisible
http://builtvisible.com/comparing-link-data-tools/
the issue you are dealing with I recommend this tool monitor back links in combination with the other tools
https://blog.monitorbacklinks.com/seo/ahrefs-vs-majestic-vs-moz-compared-to-monitor-backlinks/
_ In t__his last study I think will show you that having access to all of them is very important I like monitor back links because I can connect my accounts to their built-in Ahrefs account which if you look at their pricing is much lower than Ahrefs so why do I keep both?_
Ahrefs enterprise allows me to do things that are critical to technical audits and not that they could not be done using other tools they could it is simply faster and easier for me to have access to both.

I thought I would tell you something that should be posted for everyone because http://imgur.com/ creates bad links we have to manually remove things like .png?1 in order for them to work properly
Direct Link (email & IM)
and the only way to get them to show up is to have the .PNG,.JPEG,.GIF etc. at the end than they will show up as photos here are your photos.

Internal Links to Ecommerce Category Pages
Hello, I read a while back, and I can't find it now, that you want to add internal links to your main category pages. Does that still apply? If so, for a small site (100 products) what is recommended? Thanks

Should I Disavow More Links
My SEO website got hit with a very severe penalty about a year ago and it was totally banished from the rankings for all of the money terms like SEO, SEO company and search engine optimisation (before the penalty I ranked in the top 10-15 for all of those phrases, top 3 for SEO company). I was probably hit for being listed in shed loads of paid directories, low quality free directories, footer links in client sites, keyword forum signature links and articles with keyword rich text links. A month or so after I got hit I started trying to clean up my link profile, I got rid of all of the client website links, I changed the link text on the majority of forum signature links and article links, I managed to get rid of about 50 directory links and the ones that I could not get taken down I disavowed - about 150. During that time I sent 2-3 separate reconsideration requests and I got this message each time: "Links to your site violate Google's quality guidelines" After doing all of that work and being rejected I pretty much gave up - things just seemed to get worst, not only was I no longer ranking for the money terms, but all of my blog posts tanked as well. I got my site redesigned and switched to Wordpress - I used 301 redirects and everything but they totally didn't work. My organic traffic went down to less than 50 hits a day - before the penalty I was getting over 300 a day. Then on Saturday just gone, almost exactly a year after I got hit with the penalty I noticed my site ranking in position 23 on Google.co.uk in the UK for the competitive phrase SEO company from being absolutely nowhere and I do mean nowhere. This sign has given me hope and the motivation to get rid of the penalty altogether, update all of my articles, get rid of bad advice in old blog posts and get rid of the rest of the bad links. Thing is that I am nervous to go getting rid of more links and disavowing, what if I do more harm then good? Do you think the penalty has been removed and I should just leave the rest of the bad links or should I continue trying to clean things up? By the way, my website is http://www.seoco.co.uk

Disavow links leading to 404
Looking at the link profile anchor text of a site i'm working on new links keep popping up in the reports with let's say very distasteful anchor text. These links are obviously spam and link to old forum pages for the site that doesn't exist any more, so the majority seem to trigger the 404 page. I understand that the 404 page (404 header response) does not flow any link power, or damage, but given the nature and volume of the sites linking to the "domain" would it be a good idea to completely disassociate and disavow these domains?

Google Panelizes to much SEO
I just read this interesting article about a new Google Penalty that will be up in the next upcoming weeks/months about Google making changes to the algorithm. The penalty will be targeted towards websites that are over optimized or over seo'ed. What do you think about this? Is this a good thing or is this not a good thing for us as SEO marketeers? here's the link: SEL.com/to-much-seo I'm really curious as to your point of views. regards Jarno

How Would You Go About Building a Private Link Network?
Assuming you need to build a private link network from scratch, how would you go about doing it? I am not looking for some shady tactic, but rather something that would be white hat, yet will help in our SEO efforts. Thanks in advance.
