Backlink inconsistency
-
Hello!
We were ranked on page 1 in Google for the past 10 years for a specific key phase until this February when we were pushed to page 2.
When analyzing backlinks via majestic.com we found that our backlinks haven't been consistent, we typically have around 1,000 or less, but in February they dropped, then began spiking inconsistently (from 3000+ to a few hundred, then back up). Not sure how accurate Majestic's reporting is but we've also noticed some sites which are spamming our site with links on their low-quality and porn content websites.
Is this type of backlink inconsistency normal, or is this something that could be negatively impacting our rankings?

Hi Eileen
I just noticed you didn't respond to my questions here - are you all good? Would love to help in any way that I can!
Also, can you provide a URL so I can review? Thank you!

See if the changes correspond to the Feb 4th update
http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change
Its possible that the algorithm update was the reason for your drop and will give you a starting place to investigate.
Also it would be worth disavowing any undesirable links such as porn just to be on the safe side.

Hi Marcy
When these fluctuations happen, what types of links are you seeing? Are they only porn / low quality sites? Are they the same ones over and over?
I still think you should look into the help section for Google regarding spam and I would also look into the two resources that Moz has regarding link removals:
Ultimate Guide to Google Penalty Removal
Link Audit Guide for Effective Link Removals & Risk Mitigation
Your Start to Finish Guide for Google's Disavow ToolAt least from these you can look into spam reporting and also removing/disavowing these potentially dangerous backlinks. Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

It appearing Client specialist: Mediapartners-Google Disallow: User-Agent: * Disallow: However, is this make any backlink uphold or only this with the end goal of not ordering in google. I make it straightforward - "Is this sort of backlink creation my site My Music Goals uphold my SEO action or Not?" In this No-record site.

How can I create an accurate backlink profile?
With Google's emphasis on punishing over-optimization I would like to make sure I keep a close eye on my backlink profile. Link Detective is a great tool, however, for sites which I know have thousands of backlinks in WMT and MajesticSEO, OSE only finds a handful--maybe 10%. How can I trust the information I get from OSE to provide me with actionable data when the raw numbers of backlinks are so far off when compared to the other databases.

The impact of homepage link compared to site-wide backlinks
Hello, I was wondering as to how much a bigger impact a backlink has when its linked site-wide as opposed to homepage only? What if the PA/DA of the homepage was good enough (mid 80s), would just a homepage link give a decent result? I just want to mainly know the difference in the impact of each, regardless of the DA/PA, as long as it comes from one domain. Thank you.

Backlinks pointing to the B page of an A/B test.
To rel-canonical or to 301, that is the question. We're frequently running an A/B split test on our home page to optimize conversion. As a result about 10,000 backlinks to our homepage point to the B page. (If we're running a test when a blog or newspaper checks us out, there's a 50% chance they're diverted to the B page. So when they copy our home page URL, they're unknowingly copying the B page link.) We can't contact all of these sites and ask for them to change their links. A lot of the links are from big organizations that aren't interested in tweaking the links of old articles. So should we rel-canonical or 301 the B page? We consistently use the same URL for our B page tests, so we'd only have to 'fix' one page. Thanks in advance!
