How to avoid a redirect chain?
-
Hi there,
I am aware that it is not good practice to have a redirect chain but I am not really sure hoe to do it (on Apache).
I have multiple redirects in a chain because on the one hand I had to redirect because the content of the site got a new URL and because on the other hand I changed from http to https. Thus I have a chain like
http://example.com via 301 to http://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com
Obviously I want to clean this up without loosing any link juice or visitors who had bookmarked my site. So, I could make three separate redirects:
http://example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com
http://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com
https://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.comBut is there a way to combine it? Can I use an "OR" operator to link the 3 conditions to this one rule?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks a lot!!!

this is simple. rather that test what the domain name is, test what it is not.
use the logic,
if not my-preferred-domainname then redirect to my-preferred-domainname.

Hey there
I would also make sure that your sitemap and internal links are up to date so that there are no redirects happening in those places. You may also want to make sure you take the time to update listings and do a quick backlink audit to see if there are links you wish to update or possibly remove.
Hope this helps as well - good luck!

yeah, thanks. That helps.

Hi,
In a situation like this I would use something similar to:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_HOST} !^.+.example.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_HOST} !^.+.the-best-example.com$
RewriteRule ^(/~.+) https://greatest-example.com/$1 [R,L](Sorry this was written off the top of my head, so give it a test before rolling it out!)
Kind Regards
Jimmy

Redirecting a single page to another website
We're moving one of our services from the current website to a different domain. That domain will be dedicated just to that service. Currently, we have one page for that service on our current website. It already has been crawled and ranks well for certain keywords. But, we would want to eventually delete that page. Can I set 301 redirection for that page to another domain? At what point should I remove the page from the existing website's back-end?

Redirecting 301 or 302?
Hi, I think the part of this question has been already discussed, but not exactly the same, I think. My site requires authentication for member page. When a user try to go to member area, we redirect to 3rd party to do the authentication. 1. user clicks a link to www.mysite.com/member/contents.html
Technical SEO | | HypermediaSystems
2. www.myauthenticate.com/login?h=somehashuniquehash454859428778545 (enters id/pass)
3. login success => redirect back to www.mysite.com/member/contents.html We are doing it 302, temporary redirect. But moz crawler error seems to suggest we should do it 301.
So my question is:
A. Should we do it 301???
B. If we do 301, what happens to myauthenticate.com? since it has hashtag, I am afraid it could create a lot of duplicate contents on myauthenticate.com side... Thank you so much for your help in advance...0 -
301 Redirecting weird URLs with % in them
I've been working on redirecting links reported as 404 in Google webmaster tools. I've stumbled upon 41 URLs that Google is reporting as 404 that include a '%' in the URL, but I don't know how to redirect. Here is an example: URL: bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ Attempted redirect: redirect 301 /bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ http://www.mysite.com/ Unfortunately, after implementing the redirect, http://www.mysite.com/bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ still resolves a 404 error. Anyone successfully fix these errors using Apache .htaccess?

How to avoid automated queries to Google
We have a search engine marketing team working on different projects and we share same IP. We check our rankings manually on Google, is it sending automated queries to Google? Can it affect our sites? What solution do you suggest to check rankings without sending multiple queries to Google?

301 redirect or 302
A client of mine has an international company named www.taxglobalizers.com if you come from Holland they 302 redirect you to the www.taxglobalizers.com/en version of the site and if you come from Holland they redirect with a 302 to www.taxglobalizers.com/nl version. I think it is best to change this in a 301 redirect. Am i correct in this? Kind Regards, Ruud

302 Redirects for Minor Pages
301 redirects are clearly preferable to 302 redirects for pages that need to be indexed by search engines. If I have 302 redirects to minor pages not getting much traffic regardless of the code, how important (if at all) is changing the redirects to 301? Thanks!

301 redirect Issues
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with. So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here. we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue? we appear to have: www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop www.greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this? thanks for any help on this Lee
