What is the sense of robots.txt?
-
Using robots.txt to prevent search engine from indexing the page is not a good idea. so what is the sense of robots.txt? just for attracting robots to crawl sitemap?
-
While your robots.txt file is not the best means to control search engines, it does have a purpose. To respond to your questions:
-
the file does not "attract" any robots, but robots who do visit can learn a bit about your site and understand what content you don't wish to be crawled
-
you can block parts of your site that you feel have no value for indexing such as Keri mentioned your "print" version of pages, or overlays pages, or login pages, etc.
The idea is that you own the website, and you can have a measure of control over it. You can disallow specific crawlers, etc. although it's up to each crawler whether they actually respect your wishes.

There are often times pages you don't want indexed, and that's what robots.txt is there for. These are just some things you may not want indexed:
- Premium content for subscription-only members
- Your admin directory
- Printable versions of pages
- Development servers
You keep things you don't want out of the index, and you also don't waste the crawl budgets of the search engines on stuff that's not what you want in the engines in the first place.

Robot.txt : How to block a specific file type in several subdirectories ?
Hello everyone ! I need help setting up a robot.txt. I'm trying to block all pdf files in particular directories so I'm using this command. In the example below the line is blocking all .gif in the entire site. Block files of a specific file type (for example, .gif) | Disallow: /*.gif$ 2 questions : Can I use this command to specify one particular directory in which I want to block pdf files ? Will this line be recognized by googlebots ? Disallow: /fileadmin/xxxxxxx/xxx/xxxxxxx/*.pdf$ Then I realized that I would have to write as many lines as many directories there are in which I want to block pdf files. Let's say I want to block pdf files in all these 3 directories /fileadmin/directory1 /fileadmin/directory1/sub1 /fileadmin/directory1/sub1/pdf Is there a pattern-matching rule I could use to blocks access to pdf files in all subdirectories instead of writing 3x the above line for each subdirectory ? For exemple : Disallow: /fileadmin/directory1*/ Many thanks in advance for any insight you may have.

Adding your sitemap to robots.txt
Hi everyone, Best practice question: When adding your sitemap to your robots.txt file, do you add the whole sitemap at once or do you add different subcategories (products, posts, categories,..) separately? I'm very curious to hear your thoughts!

Is sitemap required on my robots.txt?
Hi, I know that linking your sitemap from your robots.txt file is a good practice. Ok, but... may I just send my sitemap to search console and forget about adding ti to my robots.txt? That's my situation: 1 multilang platform which means... ... 2 set of pages. One for each lang, of course But my CMS (magento) only allows me to have 1 robots.txt file So, again: may I have a robots.txt file woth no sitemap AND not suffering any potential SEO loss? Thanks in advance, Juan Vicente Mañanas Abad

Checked source code and the robots instruction has gone so a little lost. Any ideas please?

Same URL in "Duplicate Content" and "Blocked by robots.txt"?
How can the same URL show up in Seomoz Crawl Diagnostics "Most common errors and warnings" in both the "Duplicate Content"-list and the "Blocked by robots.txt"-list? Shouldnt the latter exclude it from the first list?
