Google Keyword Planner - Just PPC?
-
Morning Mozzers,
Please help a layman learn. This is probably a silly question but when I look at keyword search data in Google's Keyword Planner Tool and I see "COMPETITIVE" or "LOW" am I looking at all searches inclusive of organic and PPC?
I have been a bit confused by logging in through an Adwords account?
At the moment to get my keyword research I am using a combination of Moz, Webmaster Tools, Keyword Planner. I have had a look at the free version of SEMrush which looks really cool. Is my approach right using these tools? Am I covering all bases / missing key opportunities?
Regards
Ben

That's really very useful, thank you Matt.
I have also been recommended termexplorer.com and keywordeye.com - I guess a lot of this is personal preference.
I think I now have a clearer idea on the 3 or 4 tools I want to concentrate on using for my keyword research. For someone fairly new to SEO it can be confusing as there are so many tools out there.
But certainly MOZ, SEMrush, Ubersuggest come up time and time again, and so I think this is where I will concentrate.

We tend to use multiple solutions. Adwords planner + Ubersuggest + Moz Keyword Difficulty + SEMRush ... those four tend to give a really well-rounded view. If it's ecommerce we may add in Soovle for Amazon.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Matthew.
In light of the defiances of Keyword Planner can you recommend a better solution please? Or is it a case of using multiple tools to get a well rounded answer?

The search volume is "supposed to be" for all search volume but as has been proven time & time & time & time & time again, it's often far off. We've seen phrases in Adwords, no location set, as global as it gets with "50" results. And our client has actually achieved 700+ on the same keyphrase.
If it's in something viral that makes sense. But credit repair & debt collections? There aren't exactly mind-blowing reasons to be that far off.
For this & other reasons, we don't rely on Adwords numbers at all. You don't really know when it's going to be right or drastically wrong.

Hi Ben
First of all, that's a good solid approach. I like SEMRush a lot.
Just to clarify for you - the "competition" metric in the Keyword Planner tool is strictly for paid search competition. The search volume is for all search volume (searches that resulted in a paid or organic click, or no click at all).
Moz's tool gives you a competition score based on organic competition, so it is a good supplement.
You might also be interested in Term Explorer - as it gives a topline competition based on organic competition and is a bit more indepth. I'm a big fan of it.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your prompt reply, appreciate it.
So Google's Keyword Planner tool only shows me PAID data, so is merely showing a trend and not the complete picture.
SEMrush paid tool sounds amazing, I only heard good things. Will look into.

Hi Ben,
"when I look at keyword search data in Google's Keyword Planner Tool and I see "COMPETITIVE" or "LOW" am I looking at all searches inclusive of organic and PPC?"
Keyword planner provides stats for Paid only not Organic.
If you ready to spend some money I would like to suggest you to go for paid version of semrush tool. You will get many important stats apart from keyword research.
Hope this helps
Thanks

A Solution to Keywords Being Grouped in Google Keyword Planner
Hi guys, I am trying to get search traffic for a list of keywords which I put together a few years ago for one of my clients, this was before Google made changes to their Keyword Planner. When I am adding the list into Google Keyword Planner it is "grouping" a number of the keywords/phrases together, and therefore removing 13 of the keywords from the original list of 59 keywords. Is there a way around this so I can get search volume for the original list, and not the cut down one? I am specifically using Google Keyword Planner as I want to get search volume for a number of specific locations in the UK. Any comments/feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Jack. Brand Name Keyword Stuffing
I'm targeting Roho Cushions and the category page has many products starting with Roho underneath it. I know the keyword "Roho" shows up at least 70 times. I'm not targeting the keyword Roho, but could this negatively effect the rest of my keywords that start with Roho, such as "Roho Wheelchair Cushions"?

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

What's your keyword research system?
What is your process for keyword research? I used Google's Keyword Research Tool for the bulk of my research in the past, so I'm pretty lost right now. However, I'm on the ground level of developing a content strategy for my company's website refresh, and this is a great chance to start from scratch with a sound process. The goal, of course, would be not to respond to keywords, but rather, letting holistic keyword research guide our content strategy. But obviously, I still want to grab low-hanging fruit where I can and beef up weaker parts of the site where possible. After reading Ruth Burr's excellent post last week, I'm testing a few tools, and so far am leaning toward Wordtracker for volume/competition data, cross-referenced with Moz's ranking reporting. However, I still need to check out SEMRush and get friendlier with Keyword Planner. I just want a little SEO angel to fall out of the sky and give me a recipe to follow. No? In case someone asks, my current goal is to identify our target audience's search habits to better reach them through content on our company website. While we serve several communities and do plan to geotarget, we're not there yet. So while I'm glad we have that option on Keyword Planner, there's not much I can do with it today.

How do you determine whether to pursue keywords suggested by Google Instant?
I have heard that a good source of keyword suggestions is looking at what pops up as suggestions when you start typing into Google. My question is how do you know if it is worth your time to create content around those suggestions? If you enter these suggestions into Google's Keyword Tool, often there is no data on search volume.

Google Webmaster Keyword Significance.
In my google webmaster tools the most significant keyword google attaches to my site is word 'VAT' as in, Value Added Tax. Followed by Basket. I can see why this is, as the word VAT and Basket is on every product page, but it really is not a keyword I want to target. Does this have any negative effect on other keywords I am targeting? What should I do about this? Here is the site: https://www.loveelectronics.co.uk
