Local Landing Pages struggling with rankings although I've done most things needed. Any idea?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I am wondering if someone could advise if there's anything obvious here as to why my local landing pages suck ranking wise even though I have done all of the following. http://goo.gl/Lr4HXa
I am trying to rank for Garden tool hire Bristol on my landing page. Main category page is garden tool hire
- Consitant NAP - Citations.
- Local branch address on Page , in title tag, H1 tag and the address is in on page content which is unique.
- Schema.org has been set up with address in this aswell etc.
- Pagination set up and view all page has concanical tag pointing to page 1
- Speed not an issue as this is a fast site.
- Currently all the product links on the page are H3 tags but I've seen this on lots of other sites.
- All my NAP Citations point to the parent branch pages although I don't have any individual deep links pointing to this page.
- Unique Content
I currently don't have internal links to relevant articles on my blog page as I have those on my main category landing page as you can see here - http://goo.gl/sO9A9U but I can add these as well to all my location specific landing pages if you think it would help.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated
Pete

Content needs to be vastly different, not just slightly varied.
This can be painful, and take a lot of time and creativity to figure out how to write the same 300-500 words in a different way.
I wrote a personal blog post not too long ago on ways to write content for location pages: http://doyledigital.com.au/content-for-location-pages/

My pleasure, Pete, and don't overlook the nice medium of the blog for continuing to showcase your involvement in various cities. I think Google is still very much in love with fresh content
-
Many thanks Andy and Miriam, I think you may well be right. Whilst this technique was extremely successful a couple of years back for me Google changes have stopped this method performing as well so it may be perceived as spammy in their eyes. Whilst I've got unique content etc , I could still be getting affected by some form of algorithmic penalty
Will have to look at how to restructure things.
thanks

Hi Peter,
My own preference for doing this type of Local SEO/copywriting is to structure sites like this:
-
A page for every office or a page for every city served
-
A page for every service
I feel like once you get into trying to cover every possible city/service combo on landing pages, there can be some danger of creating thin or throwaway content. Unless your city A lawn mowing service is somehow totally different than your city B lawn mowing service, you probably shouldn't be creating these pages. Instead, have a page for city A, a page for city B and a page for lawn mowing.
I'm not saying that what I'm describing is the only way to do this - just that it's my personal preference for small-to-medium businesses.

My competitors do it and they do okay ranking wise hence I thought it may be page specific issue.
thanks for your input though, I will try and see what can be changed.

although the products are the same on the pages.
This is what is going to prevent you from reaching these goals. Google isn't going to rank two pages the same with just a difference in basics. It isn't enough for them.
There is usually a lot more to look at in these circumstances if you want to start ranking for location phrases too, because what you are doing there alone isn't enough. This is more likely to bring down problems than help you gain rankings.

Hi Andy,
Yes I see what you mean but I have a main category page and then branch specific landing pages of those category pages each with unique content on each of them.
The title tags etc all have the location in there to make them unique although the products are the same on the pages.
I don't see how else one can rank for specific location pages for their categories any other way as it's to competitive to try and compete with the majors so local search for each branch is an better way forward if I can get it work.
thanks

Hi Pete,
Just a very quick observation, you might be running into pages that are quite similar:
- http://www.bestathire.co.uk/garden-tools-bristol
Then you also have...
Pages 2 & 3 appear to be exactly the same, but with a different title, heading, etc. Google won't thank you for that.
I would spend some time thinking about the phrases you wish to rank for and making sure your pages are all suitably different in content and offerings.

Creating country specific pages to show pricing in local currencies
For our product page, we want to be able to show the pricing in the local currency of the visitor. I discussed this with our web developer and he said that we can create country-specific pages, so one for UK, Australia, etc. I am afraid that this solution might hurt our SEO as Google might see this as duplicated content. What are your thoughts about this? The website runs on WordPress.

No: 'noindex' detected in 'robots' meta tag
Pages on my site show No: 'noindex' detected in 'robots' meta tag. However, when I inspect the pages html, it does not show noindex. In fact, it shows index, follow. Majority of pages show the error and are not indexed by Google...Not sure why this is happening. The page below in search console shows the error above...

How to write blogs around a page you want to rank
Hey Moz Crew! So I'm not necessarily looking for the answer here but more of a where do I begin to learn more. If you guys could point me in the right direction or even just help me ask the question in a better way, I would be so thankful. Ok so there is page on my website that lives on the second page of Google. The page could be modified and I could add content to it if I wanted to, but let's just assume that this page is perfectly optimized with absolutely wonderful content and a great user experience. Now of course I would like to get a bunch of links to that page, but If I can't write anymore content on that page or update it, It will be harder to convince people to link to it (does that even make sense?). But if I can write blogs about really good subjects around that page, and those blogs do very well, how can I make sure that the actually page is getting all the juice that it can. And will it even get juice? Is this just a simple internal linking question? Am I tapping on the door of micro sites or landing pages? Oy vey where do I start!? ❤ Much love guys 🙂

Disallowing WP 'author' page archives
Hey Mozzers. I want to block my author archive pages, but not the primary page of each author. For example, I want to keep /author/jbentz/ but get rid of /author/jbentz/page/4/. Can I do that in robots by using a * where the author name would be populated. ' So, basically... my robots file would include something like this... Disallow: /author/*/page/ Will this work for my intended goal... or will this just disallow all of my author pages?

Can I format my H1 to be smaller than H2's and H3's on the same page?
I would like to create a web design with 12px H1 and for sub headings on the page to be more like 24px. Will search engines see this and dislike it? The reason for doing it is that I want to put a generic page title in the banner, and more poetic headings above the main body. Example: Small H1: Wholesale coffee, online coffee shop and London roastery Large h2: Respect the bean... Thanks

Additional product information: the product's sales page or a blog post?
I want to go in-depth about different customizations for custom caps, which is one of the products we offer. I just don't know whether it would be better--from an SEO perspective--to expand the caps sales page we already have or to write a blog post to give the site another valuable indexed page. From a user standpoint, I don't think it's as important, because if I do it the blog way, I can't just put a link on the page saying, Want more customizations? Visit our blog post. Any opinions?

So I Get An Interior Page To Rank, But Lower. How does that help?
Hi, So, I have a term that would bounce around #3 to 5 for. I make a page some months ago that is solely targeted to that term. And, voila! Google sees the new page as the best result instead of the home page and the new page ranks, but at #9 or #10. Of course the homepage is a stronger page, but the new page is better targeted to that term. Using the handy SEOMoz toolbar, the homepage has a page authority of 59 and the newer interior page has 32. Both are equally functional to my purpose. Part of me just wants to 301 in the interior page to the homepage and forget about it. It would take forever to get that interior page up to a similar page authority through the magic of links. What do you think I should do. I feel like I'm channeling Wile E. Coyote. Thanks! Best...Mike
