So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?
-
I used that link and wrote a post on one of my golf blogs.

I guess thats where the 'written for humans' part comes into play. As your title tag is almost the most visible of your organic you need to consider readability. Please also take a look at this http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/golf/14013084.stm

One question, isn't using "and" twice kind of a waste of characters, as that means nothing to the search engines seo-wise?
-
Good guess

Sorry if i was being a little specific and big brotherly. I guessed you were a golfer by your tan and golf shirt

Dang it lol!

Your SEOmoz profile has a link to your Twitter page, which is quite clear about your niche.

How did you know my niche

I would suggest you use the available characters though bear the following in mind;
Write a title tag which is good for humans first and robots second eg Golf Training and Fitness | Video and Online Tutorials .This is an example of easy to read title tag. There is no need to spam eg Golf Training | Golf Fitness Video | Online Golf Tutorial as search engines will give you equal ranking for words in any order.
There is evidence as explained by SEO chief Rand that title tag composition should give hierarchical prominence to your most important keywords, therefore place golf training at the start of the tag.
As the title tag is underlined and bolded in search results it is important that it is readable and attractive to increase click though rate.
There is no evidence that ranking is reduced by using all of the available title tag space therefore use it all and write to sell..

Repeat keywords on the pages/titles
I know it is important to avoid duplicate titles and title tags, but I wanted to verify. Lets say you are a collection agency, would it be smart as a strategy to do domain.com/collectionagency/Dallas_ collection_agency and have that same key word structure for many states so many pages?

Is Google indexing something I can't see on my page title?
When I do a search for my businesses website (colourpages.com) it returns a listing which is great but the title tag includes Hull Colour Pages which is our old brand name - we changed to colourpages.com 2 years ago yet Hull Colour Pages is still pulling through on the title tag. I have checked the source and it's as follows: <title>Plumbers in Hull - Reviews - colourpages.com</title> I have attached a photo which shows the issue - http://imgur.com/Cva3001 Is Google indexing it from old history that is no longer visible or am I missing something? Fixed horrible title tag on home page, and lost ranking. Will it come back?
I was helping out someone on their site and its home page ranked on page 2 for their term, and the title tag was horrible. It was 160 characters long with lots of near repetitive keywords ([keyword] - adjective [keyword] - adjective [keyword] - adjective [keyword] etc.) -- typical title that Google would penalize when it got around to it. So I created a title that made sense, for the keyword, and that followed the best practices of Google recommendations. Now it's dropped off the index. (EDIT: sorry, still in index, just not even in top 1000) Is this something I should not have done? I was just trying to keep them from getting slammed. And, how long should I expect it to take to get my ranking back? This is the only page title I changed.

Does my actual blog post title have any effect once I create a title tag for SEO purposes?
A little confused about this. Reason I ask is that using my actual title for my title tag sometimes isn't the best for getting ranked, so the title and title tag are sometimes not the same.
