I have an eCommerce Site with in some cases, 100s of versions of the same product. How do I avoid "duplicate content" without writing literally 100s of unique product descriptions for the exact same product?

For instance, one item where the only difference is the Sports Team Logo is different, etc... or It comes in a variety of color Variants. I'm using Shopify.

Philip,
This page:
http://www.picnicandtailgate.com/products/reclining-camp-chair-with-mlb-logos-by-picnic-time
Should be the canonical version, referenced as such in the rel canonical tags, on these pages:
http://www.picnicandtailgate.com/products/reclining-camp-chair-with-mlb-logos-by-picnic-time?variant=1367734467
http://www.picnicandtailgate.com/products/reclining-camp-chair-with-mlb-logos-by-picnic-time?variant=1367734531
http://www.picnicandtailgate.com/products/reclining-camp-chair-with-mlb-logos-by-picnic-time?variant=1367735171This seems to be the way you have it set up at the moment, and I would leave it like that. If your hope is to get more search traffic for team-specific searches you'll either have to rely on that one page ranking for all team variations (each team is listed in the code from the selector box so you shouldn't need to add them somewhere else on the page) OR you'll have to create unique and useful content for each one of them that doesn't follow a pattern (i.e. don't just replace the team name on each page).
Does that answer this question for you, or were there other related issues?

Hi there
If you have unique products, you should make sure your on-site SEO is unique as well.
That being said, Inflow has a great resource regarding duplicate content for ecommerce, I suggest you check it out.
Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

I do in fact have pages with all the options as well as photos that change by the user selection (seen in the link below). I was unsure of potentially being penalized by Google for breaking out each TEAM in each SPORT to have it's own page. There would be value in this as I could create Individual Team "Landing Pages". If I'm going to have to write descriptions for the same product as amany as 200+ times, it's not going to be possible.
Here's an example of a Product Page with all options:
http://www.picnicandtailgate.com/products/reclining-camp-chair-with-mlb-logos-by-picnic-time -
I worked on a similar problem, we created an interstitial page for a general product and then used canonical tags to point all of the e-commerce product pages back to the interstitial page.
Ideally you would want one page where you could just select different options, but depending on your technology that may not be possible.
-
1. Use as many options as possible
2. Think about your product names, name them so they're first word is different on every product. This should be possible.
Red Team Logo
Blue Team Logo
(Options are better but if you must, title it like that.)
3. It seems like a large task, but take the time to write descriptions differently. It gives you a chance to play around with many keywords and will be very worth it in the end.
Again options are going to be a big help to minimize duplicate descriptions, names and titles.

How "Top" or "Best" are considered when in front of keyword
I would like to know if someone has proven info how google today counts words "Top" or "Best" when in front of main keywords you try to rank for. For example, if I have a keyword like "Restaurants in Madrid" and I optimize that page without using words "top" or "best" will it have good rankings for keywords "top restaurants in madrid" and "best restaurants in madrid" ? I suppose that google is smart enough to know that web page should be good ranked even without using those 2 words but would like to know percentage of my loss if I just exclude those words from title tag and other important onpage factors. I want to rank high for all the 3 combinations, with "top", with "best" and without it in front so searching for best solution. I plan just to add one of those words, for example "top" and hope that google will know that "top" = "best" 🙂

Duplicate content, which seems not to be duplicate :S
After crawling I am used to getting a lot of duplicate content messages in Moz, which are High Priority. I do not know what to do with them, since I believe we tackled all the issues. Main point being the advise to put in a link rel=canonical. An example of a page that accordeing to the report has a duplicate. I do not see how. Can you help with that? http://www.beat-it.nl/4y6hctr24x7wdmr-ml350-p-ic-procaresvc.html duplicate sample http://www.beat-it.nl/modu-hp-a5800-acm-for-64-256-aps.html

Simple on-site SEO - bet practice for keywords in content
Hello, The Moz on-page grader will give a grade of A if the keyword appears exactly in the content at least one time. If there are 500 words and a lot of it is about the main keyword, what have you found to be important to look for beyond the on-page grader - beyond the one exact instance of the keyword? I'm specifically talking just about keywords in the content. My guess is that it needs to occur 3 or 4 times in different forms and at least once exactly, but the on-page grader doesn't require it. What have you found?

Ideal product descriptions. What instructions to give to copywriter?
I plan to hire a copywriter to write high quality unique product descriptions for luxury products in one of our ecommerce sites. Apart from being well written and unique, any suggestions on what specifications to give to copywriter?

E.g. length of text per product, obviously no keyword stuffing, but any instructions regarding keywords? Any good posts or specifications you can refer me to on the topic? thanks0 -
Duplicate Content on Category Pages
Hi Everyone, I have a few category pages within a category for my eCommerce store and I've recently started writing a short description for each. However a lot of these paragraphs can be replicated for the same category. For instance '1 Inch thickness' I'll show all the information, and it'll be very similar to '2 inch thickness' but obviously one is 1 inch and one is 2 inch so I would only be changing one keyword and that is the thickness. I feel that this is helping customers because it has all the information in each category e.g. how to filter your choices. But it might be duplicate content. What would you recommend?

How to avoid duplicates when URL and content changes during the course of a day?
I'm currently facing the following challenge: Newspaper industry: the content and title of some (featured) articles change a couple of times during a normal day. The CMS is setup so each article can be found by only using it's specific id (eg. domain.tld/123). A normal article looks like this: domain.tld/some-path/sub-path/i-am-the-topic,123 Now the article gets changed and with it the topic. It looks like this now: domain.tld/some-path/sub-path/i-am-the-new-topic,123 I can not tell the writers that they can not change the article as they wish any more. I could implement canonicals pointing to the short url (domain.tld/123). I could try to change the URL's to something like domain.tld/some-path/sub-path/123. Then we would lose keywords in URL (which afaik is not that important as a ranking factor; rather as a CTR factor). If anyone has experiences sharing them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jan
