Why is our login page ranked higher than our homepage?
-
Hello everyone,
When you search "ProtonMail", our Login page always ranks #1 while our homepage ranks #2. We're unsure why this is happening. The PA for our homepage is higher than the login page, and the login page itself basically has zero content except for a login form. We don't want to put the login page on robots.txt, we want to do our best to preserve it so that people can login. However it still does not make sense to us how the login page ranks higher, even though it has a lesser PA.
I'd appreciate any help or advice you might have.
Thank you.

I have no evidence of this but maybe Google is taking into account your clickthrough rate. If people search "ProtonMail", and almost always go to the login page they might have bumped it up.

I actually think the result makes sense. If you do a Google search for Protonmail (or Hotmail or Gmail) are you most likely:
a) a current user who wants to login
b) a new user searching only for the brand keyphrase?
Your login page is most likely to be the page someone is searching for. Nearly every big service I could find worked this way with the exception of ebay. On a search for Hotmail, the first result is "Sign in"
Nearly everyone in my family types in the website they want to visit and searches Google for it. It drives me NUTS but it's how they browse. I've watched my brother type "facebook" into Google more than I care to admit. But from a user point of view, that's an "address bar" so I typed in Facebook. I want to go to "the Facebook" to see my friends.
I think that's why login would be a preferred page by Google. They expect most people searching to try you would be searching protonmail reviews, protonmail vs gmail, things like that. They wouldn't just search the brand unless they already know you. And of those who know you and are Googling you, most want to login. Make sense?

Hi there
I honestly wouldn't consider this an issue. You're login and homepage rank at the top. I would let the nature of the SERPs run it's course.
That being said, I would include a link (other than the logo in the upper left hand corner) to the homepage of sort on the login page. That way you cater to two users - the ones who want to login and the ones that want to learn more about your services.
Also, between you login and homepage, I occasionally get a 408 error when clicking through. I attached a screenshot below. You can learn more about those here.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thank you for the response Patrick!
We do have several sitemaps and a sitemap index set up at https://protonmail.ch/sitemap_index.xml, and our homepage is given the highest priority.
We'll have to look into disavowing spammy backlinks and see if that helps.
If we put the login page on robots.txt to prevent google from indexing, and then reversed the process to allow google to index it again, do you think it would reconcile the problem possibly? I have a feeling the reason why the login page is kept at that rank is due to the history of that link, because the homepage used to link directly to the login page, however it no longer does (sign in is integrated on homepage), except for the footer.

Hi there
I wouldn't be too alarmed, you will find this with some searches for email providers:
Yahoo
Hotmail
AOLI noticed you don't have a sitemap, I recommend creating one and give the most priority to the homepage. From there, I would upload those to both Google and Bing. This will help crawlers understand the website in importance.
I would also take a look at your backlinks - your site (especially your homepage) seems to be getting quite a few spammy backlinks - example. Look which ones can be removed or disavowed.
Try this method and let me know if you see any changes. Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

Unexpected Rank Down After Page Update
Hello Team, I have a post on my blog which was ranking on #1 in SERP. I always tried to update it with new content. On 31-Mar-2017, I made a big update in it. Like, it was a list of 20 tips and I made it to 50+. I thought it will help me to increase it's CTR. And, I changed its URL and redirect old one to new one.But when I checked today, it was totally disappeared from SERP 😞 it's nowhere. But it is indexed I have checked but not ranking now. I did this thing (Content Upgrade) before and it always gave good results but I don't know what happened now.Any suggestions or help?Old URL: http://excelchamps.com/blog/2015/12/21-useful-macro-codes-for-vba-newcomers/New URL: http://excelchamps.com/blog/2017/03/useful-macro-codes-for-vba-newcomers/-With love and respect,Puneet Gogia

Why Google ranks a page with Meta Robots: NO INDEX, NO FOLLOW?
Hi guys, I was playing with the new OSE when I found out a weird thing: if you Google "performing arts school london" you will see w w w . mountview . org. uk at the 3rd position. The point is that page has "Meta Robots: NO INDEX, NO FOLLOW", why Google indexed it? Here you can see the robots.txt allows Google to index the URL but not the content, in article they also say the meta robots tag will properly avoid Google from indexing the URL either. Apparently, in my case that page is the only one has the tag "NO INDEX, NO FOLLOW", but it's the home page. so I said to myself: OK, perhaps they have just changed that tag therefore Google needs time to re-crawl that page and de-index following the no index tag. How long do you think it will take to don't see that page indexed? Do you think it will effect the whole website, as I suppose if you have that tag on your home page (the root domain) you will lose a lot of links' juice - it's totally unnatural a backlinks profile without links to a root domain? Cheers, Pierpaolo

Homepage not showing for searches
Hi Looking for a bit advice our client - www.financial-wise.co.uk We worked with this client on his old website www.mortgage-wise.co.uk we had him ranking for most local searches. Anyway the issue im having now is, for certain searches im struggling to get them ranking again and for searches such as financial wise, its inner pages showing instead of the homepage? I have che checked and homepage is indexed, i have also re-written all the text on the homepage but still having some issue, its almost like the homepage has been penalised any help would be great?

Diagnostic says too many links on a page and most of the pages are from blog entries. Are tags considered links? How do I decrease links?
I just ran my first diagnostic on my site and the results came back were negative in the area of too many links one a page. There were also quite a few 404 errors. What is the best way to fix these problems? Most of the pages with too many links are from blog posts, are the tags counted as well and is this the reason for too many links?

Sending signals to Google to rank the correct page for a set of Keywords.
Hi All, Out of all our keywords their are 3 that are showing our home page in the serps rather than the specific product page URL on Google.co.za (Google.com ranks the correct URL) Im not sure why this is happening as most links built using the anchor text are pointing to the correct page. Why would google prefer ranking our home page on local search and rank the correct page on Google.com? (only 3 keywords have this problem) I have tried to correct this by creating links from strong internal pages with anchor text pointing to the correct URL. I have also concentrated on building links from .co.za domains using the anchor text and correct URL but to no avail. It has been 2 weeks now, since i tried to sort it out, but im not sure what else i can do to tell Google to rank the correct page. Any ideas? Regards Greg

UK website ranking higher in Google.com than Google.co.uk
Hi, I have a UK website which was formerly ranked 1st in Google.co.uk and .com for my keyword phrase and has recently slipped to 6th in .co.uk but is higher in position 4 in Google.com. I have conducted a little research and can’t say for certain but I wonder if it is possible that too many of my backlinks are US based and therefore Google thinks my website is also US based. Checked Google WmT and we the geo-targeted to the UK. Our server is also UK based. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks
