Just that really - we're getting on average around 80% online enquiries, and 15% calls. Calls convert better so would prefer calls. What steps would you put in place to increase calls?

Ours is a lead generation site - we're a mortgage broker.

So far we have a click to call button on the quote page which loads on mobile devices and doesn't display when the call centre is shut.

We get traffic from organic and PPC.

I'm trying to come up with a bit of a plan to address this.

      Thanks,

      Amelia

we don't do the hard sell

If I read that on your website, I would be a lot more likely to call.  This is why I would be an email person.  I want to avoid this.

Would you believe it though??? I wonder how many people would... I guess its worth testing!!! I'll talk to the team and see what they think. Thank you!

Unless we know the customer's financial history we can't offer fair and reasonable advice

If you tell me this before you start asking I am will be more comfortable about providing it.  You probably do this now.

hmmm... I honestly don't know. The sales teams do build a rapport with the customer over the phone, which helps I think. I'd need to see their 'script' (they don't have scripts as such, more like checklist to ensure they cover the regulatory/legal requirements) to know for sure.

Thanks again for the input - I always look forward to your advice.

            Hi Egol

With regards to Financial services companies asking for personal information - we need that in order to offer advice. Unless we know the customer's financial history we can't offer fair and reasonable advice - and to suggest a mortgage product without knowing this would be irresponsible.

As for if you just want to ask a few questions - again, it depends on how detailed the answers need to be - 'can you get me a mortgage?' is one question which seems simple enough, but has a different answer depending on who's asking it!

We provide BTL mortgages (for landlords), which aren't usually regulated, but our company is regulated so we still comply with regulations because that's the right thing to do. It means that we have to provide personalised advice, which means asking questions!

So, yes I get what you're saying but the questions are there for a reason. However, I think you raise a really valid point about pushy sales. Our sales team aren't pushy (it could be argued they're not pushy enough....), but the questions they ask are necessary.

Thank you, you have given me food for thought. I just need to find a way of showing that we don't do the hard sell...

We had live chat previously - it didn't really work for us to be honest. Hardly anyone ever used it. That was two years ago.

I get what you're saying about hating calling - I hate calling too, but we get better conversion from calls so my personal preference is irrelevant really! I do think though that someone who makes a call rather than fills in the contact form may be more committed and therefore that's the reason calls are better.

We have to speak to the customer over the phone anyway in order to advise them, so a phone call is inevitable.

I agree, especially with financial products.   I worry that they are going to want lots of personal information from me when I am only calling to ask a few questions.  Then they hit the hard sell.

So, if you can convey that you are not hard sell people and that you only ask personal information when the person is ready to give it then I might see that as a refreshing change and take a chance calling.

Personally I hate calling, I will always choose to send an email or do live chat. Have you taken a look at live chat?

                    Hi Patrick,

I can't A/B test the page for calls as we're not currently using call tracking (and TBH I don't think we'll be allowed the budget for that). We do have separate numbers for different channels (PPC, SEO, Referral websites etc) but it starts to get complicated to then add another layer, which is the only way I can think this could work. Perhaps I'm missing something though?

Our site is fully responsive and Click to call is already utilised. I have recently introduced a click to call button on the quote pages... I am thinking of widening this to other landing pages too.

I wish I could use phone tracking - I think that way we could optimise our PPC campaign for calls rather than online forms - it seems to me that as we've optimised for more online enquiries (our current only conversion tracked by Adwords) we've lost calls (but gained overall in terms of lead volume). I think though that the budget will not be released for this - I tried around 2 years ago and was unsuccessful. Though it may be worth another crack...

                    Thanks for your tips!

                      Thank you Tony,

Unfortunately we have to be really careful about making promises because of our industry regulator.  I can't even put 'We can help' - It would have to be 'We may be able to help' - which loses punch! This is a real problem for us (but also our competitors) and one that frustrates the hell out of me!

I really like your phone icon idea - that's something I will recommend to the team.

Thank you again for these tips.

Thank you Alick - yes we are doing this already... Not with any great success TBH. The problem we have is the main PPC campaign cannibalises the (newer) mobile one. Though we're still at very early stages of it and I'm sure improvements can be made!

As for meta descriptions, I try to fit the phone number in there if I can, and have done so since we launched the site. I haven't been using a separate phone number for this (as opposed to our usual 'SEO' number I mean) so it's not tracked. I therefore, don't know how effective it is.

                        Great tips, thank you!

                        Amelia

                          Hi there

I definitely recommend using some A/B testing with trying different CTAs to call. Utilize those that work best for different pages.

I would also make sure that your mobile experience is great and that you utilize click to call on your site. No one likes filling out forms on mobile, they want to call if interested. Make sure they have that option.

Google also allows you to add phone numbers to your ads - make sure you look into that!

Look into call tracking options as well to see what channels are performing the best for calls.

                          Hope this helps! Good luck!

                            Hey Amelia,

With CTA's, try using emotive words rather than standard words. For example:

                            • "Save ££££ - Call Us Now" (or "Save $$$$ - Call Us Now")
                            • "Paying Too Much? Call Us Now"
                            • "Deserve Better? Call Us Now"
                            • "Need Guidance? Call Us Now"
                            • "We Can Help - Call Us Now"

Also, don't just have the "click to call" button on the Quote page, add the button to every page so wherever a visitor is on their journey through your site, they can call you.

                            Make sure:

                            • Your CTA's stand out from the rest of the webpage
                            • You use boxes or circles, with a small telephone icon (for visual effect) - plain text CTA's can get lost in the page aesthetics
                            • They're above-the-fold - preferably positioned top right
                            • You split test different emotive CTA's, review results, then repeat until a successful formula is found

With Meta Titles, Desc's etc - again, use emotive words and end all messaging with "Call Us Now!" (against competitors who just fill their titles or descriptions with keywords, yours will stand out..)

Hope this helps! Good luck 🙂

                              Hi Amelia,

If you are running PPC campaign on Google Adwords you should try Call-only Campaign launched by Google in Feb 15.

Call-only campaigns allow you to focus on getting more people to click-to-call you straight from your ads.

In case of organic you can define CTA in meta title / meta description & on website as well.

                              Thanks

Redirect Management on Headless Wordpress w/ React Front End

Hello everyone, As Headless Wordpress becomes more and more popular, it becomes more complicated to manage and track 301 redirects. I'm reaching out for advice on this. Our main issue right now, is that after migrating from Drupal to a Headless Wordpress/React platform we lost the ability to track, manage, and view traffic analytics for users hitting those redirects. This was something we were able to do in Drupal. Example: If we have a redirect in place we could see how many times in the past x number of days that redirect was hit by users attempting to access the old URL. Unfortunately, Yoast Premium, has been helpful with other SEO needs, but this is one that it is not able to manage. Anyone have any ideas, experience, or thoughts on this issue? Thanks for your time

Partial Website Translation - Strategy Debate

Hi We have a travel site with over 3000 pages in English. Of these around 200 relate to products and the rest are content articles, most of which with very low traffic. Certain products and pages appeal directly to users in different languages (around 20-30 out of 200 for each language). We are debating how to go about translating these pages... If we did "oursite.com/es/product", "oursite.com/de/product", etc then users entering the site on these translated pages from Google would be limited to seeing a very cut down site, bearing in mind most speak English and would also be able to interact with our English language content we are probably losing out. Also, if we detected user language on entry, we would show effectively hide most of our product and content from users. Any suggestions or ideas about how to go about this without losing engagement/conversions/creating a mess?

Best to Include Phone Number as CTA Button in Mobile Version of B+B Web Site?

We are attempting to keep the number of CTAs (Calls to Action) on our commercial real estate website to a minimum. Our adjusted design (see attached) has 2 CTAs. One is "Contact Agent" the other is "Schedule a Tour". We are focusing on the listing page, which is the primary product page and critical in terms of CTA. Our mobile version does not show a phone number while the desktop version (also attached) displays a phone number. Should the mobile version also display a button a phone number? Some members of our target audiences, business owners and executives who are often in their 40s and 50s may prefer to call us up rather than communicate by written message. Any suggestions for elegantly displaying the phone number without causing confusion? I have read that the number of CTAs should be limited so I am on the fence as to whether or not to include a phone number Thanks,

Can Very High Impressions and 0% Organic CTR Impact our SEO Rankings?

I have a very strange feeling that someone bad is trying to hurt our company, but maybe I am wrong. Let me explain. In the last two month, we have seen a very significant drop in sales on our website, but we couldn't figure out why. We have looked at different metrics (Google Search Console, Moz, Google Analytics), but everything looked alright. We had 10% loss in traffic, but we didnt believe at the time that it could be the main issue. Just yesterday we've discovered the following (please see attached screenshot😞 On August 18, 2018 Google launched Search Update On the same date, we had a jump in Organic Search Impressions for one particular keyword, which we never tracked before: "free facebook login". Majority of all impressions (233,000 out of 258,000) were from Philippines. Very low total number of clicks (50 clicks) led to 0% Average CTR for this keyword. Which in return, also lowered our global CTR by 1%. One month later we had 1000's of spam emails sent to our Helpdesk from two IP addresses, also from Philippines. We blocked them of course. It could be all coincidence. I dont know. But do you think that someone can use this fraudulent tactic to lower our CTR and drop our ranking and traffic? Can this influence our SEO in any way? It's also possible that someone is attacking Facebook and we just happen to be there, on the first page, for the same keyword. Should we try to eliminate our page for this keyword and see what happens? I've checked this article from Rand Fishkin - https://moz.com/blog/impact-of-queries-and-clicks-on-googles-rankings-whiteboard-friday and it seems that CTR is an important factor. However the article is from 2015 and maybe it's no longer relevant. What should we do? Thanks! G86Nge4

Overlay / modal for product pages - bad or good for SEO?

Hi all, I am considering using full overlays/modals for an e-commerce site for all our product pages (category/listing pages will be "normal", the product page will come over the listing page as an overlay/modal when you click on the product). Those “product overlays” will also be accessible directly with own URL (if need to be linked to for ex.). All the literature I find out there treats overlays and modals as “marketing” ones (ads, sign-ups, etc.) and is generally critical to overlays when it comes to SEO, while also saying that an overlay that has to do with good UX should not hurt the SEO of our site. What do you think? Will all product pages as overlays be considered as good UX by the search engines and therefore not be negatively impacted, SEO speaking? Or should we stay clear of overlays and create “normal” product pages? Thanks in advance! Arnaud NB: The reason we want to create those overlays are for design and UX purposes, and try to increase our conversion rate.

Has anyone ever used Adwords' Forwarding Numbers as a Call Tracking Service?

Hi, I was taking over a client's Adwords account from a previous agency. It appears the former agency added the Google Forwarding Number (for call tracking on call extensions) and added it to the client's website. Therefore, if anyone calls that number from the website, it would register within Adwords (just not as a conversion but as a click under "call extensions") The problem: you can't filter by phone number (the same number calling +1 would indicate spam) you can filter by device (so tablet / computer) can be considered spam generally. Questions: Anyone ever used this before? Your thoughts? Does anyone know if there is spam coming from mobile devices now-a-days? Please tell me what I'm missing. Any advice / anyone else seen this / done this? Thanks Moz Community, Cole

                                Email before Download or Not?

I'm designing an exhibition stand at the moment and am going to be putting QR codes that link to a technical specification on the products. The question is - do I just allow them to download the pdf or do I ask for a name and email address before they can do that. As its an exhibition stand I should get the business cards anyway - but to know exactly what products each person is interested in would help I'm not sure how many people use QR codes in Asia, have a QR code readers..... and would adding the email request just be too much? Whats your opinion? The product is an industrial one and mainly engineers and procurement types from the oil and gas industry will be visiting the stand.

The Effects of "Call for Pricing" Pricing Structures

I have a wholesaler who sells great products but they have an internet pricing policy that states we cannot show prices online and that we must have a "call for pricing" or "request a quote/price" button instead because retailers are losing sales due to lower prices online from other retailers. I know, I know.. They are out of their mind. I have already told them that they should have online MAP pricing requirements to protect their retailers but they refuse to even set an MSRP! I've been looking for some articles to show the statistics of customers lost from not having a price on your site. Does anyone have any information or suggested links on this topic? and the final question is if I was to remove the prices from my website, would that in turn affect my rankings?
