Very basic hands-on type of question about SEO
-
Hello,
I am a complete newbie to the world of SEO and I have read few thing available on the net about things to begin with (so google seo guide and then seomoz beginers tutorial) and I just wanted to ask if I understand the process correctly:
So I have my website lest call it abcd.com and there I might have a subpage about certain type of robots or specific parts that these robots are built from. I do my keyword search using adwords keyword search tool. Where I get 10 phrases (phrase1, phrase2, phrase3 so on..) that could be used by users to search information about certain type of robots I wrote on my website. Let's asume all 10 of those phrases have low competition so they can all be used. And they are from the long tail ofcourse so let's say I can get 10,000 searches from them per month. Some of them would have 200 searches, some 1500, some 5000 per month in that google adwords report.
After reading those basic tutorials I understand it this way:
- I put one or two best phrases of those 10 in my <title></p> <p>2) I describe the website as accurately as possible to those keywords in <meta description> i.e. Those specific robots are built from those specific parts - we know all about them.</p> <p>3) I put all of them in <meta keywords> phrase1,2,3, etc.</p> <p>4) I use one or two phrases in <h1> on the page with article</p> <p>5) then I use those phrases in the text that's on that particular page of my website - text is about certain type of robots and parts etc.</p> <p>6) I put photos on that page with alt descriptions that may contain some of these phrases</p> <p>7) to be honest I don't know how am I suppose to build links from that page about certain type of robots to anywhere else on my website - but I undestand that's the part of SEO as well</p> <p>And that's pretty much how I understand the basics of SEO. I read about it and I just don't know if that's what I am suppose to do. Silly me!</p> <p> </p></title>

No point in irrelevant linking.
There's no harm in going back and adding links once you have relevant content to link to, sometimes you even change where links are pointing, but I wouldn't aim to have X amount of links in each article.
For my own sites the more powerful the page the more likely I am to put extra links in but as a rule I try not to have more than 3 links in the body of an article. But, simply linking when it seems useful is a good rule of thumb.
-
Well what I was wondering is I will write an article on certain topic and I don't think I will have any big amount of internal links to put in there. Obviously with time the amount of content will grow and it will allow me to put one or two links in one article going to another one. Is there any min. I should be aiming at ?
-
Not Joomla I don't think, but it's a more than unusual way to make a site
Anyway, it works. I've never tested what commas do with regards SEO, so can't say if it will help or hinder.
Was question 7 about internal link structure or gaining external links? (or, as I first thought how to actually code a link?)
-
hmm, I don't know how to answer this question, so I'll just give you the link, however website is not in english http://naprawrower.pl
-
So how is your site structured?
Are the commas the same a folders/categories?
As in is tutorials-photo,14,replacing-parts.html equivalent to category,id,filename.html?
Is the site built in Joomla?
-
I actually don't build this website myself. I got someone to do it for me.
-
How have you managed to get commas in your URLs?
It's not that they won't work but they should be reserved as special characters - http://www.apps.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3986.html
How are you building your site?
-
Currently my links look like that:
-
@ 1) So would there be any advantage in giving title: How to change part1 in your robot | mypage.com over Part1 overhaul | mypage.com - they pretty much mean same thing and I think they might be equally popular but second is shorter
@ 2) That's what I meant, content I have on my website is related closesly to keywords - nonetheless should I try to avoid keyword here over nice slick and matching description? However I get the idea and will keep that in mind.
@ 3) OK no meta keywords. Sounds strange but I trust you So if everyone suddenly stopped using them how would you be able to check how competitive each phrase is ?
@ 4) Have them, will definately use them!
@ 5) That's what I had in my mind. It can be tricky but doable and I'm sure I could create good content with few synonims or different phrases. In the end it's not great to use same phrase over and over again I suppose.
@ 6) images naming: should I use the _ or - ? First time I have put images in one of my articles I had sequencial name for each robots_part1/2/3 but not alt tags. Now is it important to have the name of image describing its contents - as the alt tag does ? You can google images but I didn't get to the part of how these are being read by googlebots.
- Definately will investigate that link.
Thanks very much for your help.

Three things I'd recommend checking out:
- This video on SEO basics - http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo (at the top)
- The Beginner's Guide to SEO - http://guides.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization
- This guide to on-page optimization, which can help answer a lot of the specific questions you've got here - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/perfecting-keyword-targeting-on-page-optimization
As Joel pointed out, the on-page optimization tool that's part of PRO can also be helpful, but it's good to have an understanding of the what and why, too.
This powerpoint deck might also be helpful if you like PPT format as a way to run through things - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-comprehensive-intro-to-seo-powerpoint-slide-deck-
Wish you the best of luck!

I want to say yes
You seem to have a grasp of the basics, Keyword Research > On Page Optimisation > Link Building but there's no substitute for experience.
There's no single formula for doing SEO, there's some best practises but even if you do everything perfectly there's no guarantees you'll rank for the words you want to (not trying to put you off :D)
You seem to have read a lot of relevant articles and sources so I'm only going to give you one bit of advice.
GO FOR IT!
Even if you don't get it right first time you'll learn so much by doing it and if you love SEO you'll just keep trying to get better. Stop by and ask if you have more specific questions and good luck!

Have I chosen the wrong SEO consultant?
Hi all I've very recently started a small chimney sweeping business for which my friend has designed and built a website, kembersembers.co.uk. Not approaching this from a tech-savvy background I have learnt a lot over the past month but am still an utter novice and as such require some form of help to get me up and running. My main and immediate priority (sweeping season starts soon!) was to have it so when my company name, kembers embers, was googled I would come up at the top of the results. I understand this can take a little time but it has been a month now since I indexed and I have been told my domain authority is 0.1% so I have sought help. I don't want to sign up to a 3/6/12 month contract with a firm so I found an SEO consultant local to me who said they could spend a couple of hours doing the right things to hopefully help jump this initial hurdle. I parted with £120 for this which I deemed to be the going rate and they do/did seem honest and professional enough. Upon meeting the consultant he has since told me that he would like to set the website up under a Wordpress template and has cajouled me into changing my hosting over to one he uses also. He says it will take a couple of hours work to do this (there goes my £120) but without this he would hit walls which would be timely to get past and so will save me money in the long run. Do these kind of suggestions ring an alarm bell to anyone? It didn't seem right that a good SEO couldn't work with what I already have so it leads me to the question is this one to avoid? On a side note I have also received bad advice from friends of friends/family who claim to know SEO but have, for example, put me in the direction of a link scheme through fiverr.com which I understand may have done me more damage than good. I am now more aware of white hat vs black hat and wish to proceed with the development of my online presence in an ethical way growing organically. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone know of an api for on site SEO?
I have searched for one, but really cannot find one that fits my needs. I am looking at making an on site grader / service that will check pages and point out SEO problems. One that I have found that I like is seorch.eu but they do not have an api. I do not want to reinvent the wheel if I do not have to. Also, the api does not have to be free, or it does not even have to be an api, it can be a self hosted application too.

SEO for page that is made up of multiple posts
When a page is made up of lots of individual wordpress posts, how should it be handled from an SEO perspective? Should the individual posts be hidden from the search engines and only the page url which contains all the posts collectivity be indexed? Page in question below: http://teammateworld.com/case-studies/ Thanks in advance.

Organic SEO for Local Towns
This is a fairly common question, but I am going to ask it again. I want to get ranked for many keywords: "hr outsourcing sheboygan", "HR outsourcing duluth", etc., all in my small state. Doing some random research, there are few if any pages with exact match phrases in the URL, Title, Etc. = No competition) Moreover, Google is not popping google places ads for these terms. My plan is to create fairly unique pages on my site optimized for each town. Right now, the pages are at 65% duplicate. I would assume that all of my pages will have some degree of duplication - there are similar elements on every page. If I run the content through a duplicate content tester, is there a % of unique content that would be fairly safe to avoid the duplicate content slap? Yes, I know it's more complicated than that semantic, heuristic, etc. - just looking for some general guidelines.
