Citation Building - Should this still be a part of our link building strategy?
-
With algo updates like Pigeon, should citation building still remain a core part of our link building strategy?
-
Hi AfroSEO,
Citation building is still completely fine for qualifying local businesses, but I tend to think of the main goal of this as being the dissemination of your business data throughout a wide variety of platforms rather than primarily as a linkbuilding strategy. In a competitive field, your best competitors are all likely to have similar citations sets on the major platforms, so you having the same won't really be a competitive difference maker between your business and others. Rather those types of gains tend to come from things your competitors haven't managed to achieve ... such as earning more or better natural links for great content on your site, having your business featured on blogs and news sites, earning social notice, etc.

Thanks, this was my general idea. I have been hearing quite a bit of conflicting info, just wanted clarification.

Citations are STILL a powerful part of local SEO. They've gotten somewhat of a spammy rap over the last few years due to SEOs offering them as a spam link building service, but they are still powerful and important.
The key is less about quantity and more about relevancy. Look for niche specific listings sites and more importantly, city specific listing sites. The more local and geo relevancy you can drive through your citations, the better.
Here's a service I use: http://webris.org/products/local-citations/

I second this. Whitespark is great.

Absolutely yes.
Citations are wonderful for local search and to pass additional signals to Google that you wont get from a traditional link.
I would also suggest paying for a Whitespark account as this is amazing for finding citation sources.
If you don't want to pay, a little trick is to find the phone number of your competitors, search for that number in Google and see which sources are indexed (that aren't the competitor). You can get good citations that way also.

Changing Business Address on Google Profile & Citations
Hello, I'm looking to change a business address to a new one on a Google business profile (still in the same area but on a different street). So, I'll need to update all citations and website with the new address - Is it recommended to update the citations & website first, and then change the address on the Google business profile, or vice-versa? Looking to do this as safely as possible without negatively impacting the rankings much. I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information on this. Thanks in advance.

How important is citations for an online business?
If you run an online business, just how important is citation building? Our client does not want to disclose her physical home address from where she operates and the campaign does not consist of any local keywords. Should we then focus on link building and growing the site's DA instead? As well as getting onpage elements optimised. Many thanks in advance for your input!

Multi location strategy - tracking keywords
I have very recently taken on a local business to manage and quite new to all of this. Your posts on the subject of multi-location SEO have been incredibly useful and the original blogpost on Local landing pages by Miriam Ellis is in my reading list and I am sure will be revisited regularly. I have another question on this obviously complex subject, what to do about tracking your keywords in MOZ Pro? I have subscribed and set up my main keywords and linked each to the 40 different service locations for our business, which is based in a single location but services a wide area, however this now gives me 400 keywords to track, which seems way too much and unmanageable. Can you give me some advice on how to make this much more effective? Many thanks, Sarah

Amount of Internal Links?
Does anyone know how much internal linking is helpful in ranking? And, what is the recommended amount of internal links in a page of the website? I have seen some websites adding so much internal links ranking good but not sure about the recommended amount.

Video marketing strategy for new sites - Youtube / third party vs self hosted?
Howdy Mozzers, We are a new UK solar comparison site looking to implement video to help buid our site traiffic / leads. We currently make a 1 min video summary of our blog posts using Animoto and embed the video at the top of the blog post on our site. The original thought of introducing video was to help our blog posts rank higher. My question is, which of the following strategy is the best for building traffic and generating leads for our site 1. Hosting video on Youtube and embedding it on our site 2. Hosting video on Animoto and embedding it on our site (not sharing on youtube) 3. Hosting the video on our own domain and not sharing it on Youtube and other third party sites 4. Embedding the video from youtube or animoto on our site and sharing it everywhere (dailymotion, vimeo, etc) Our target audience is UK only for the time being. We would like to build traffic quickly and are focused on the short term. I would be appreciate any replies discussing the different advantages disadvantages of the options and a final personal opinion. Thanks!

Google+ for Business Links Section - Not Available
I haven't found any documentation on this - curious if anyone's noticed that Google+ Local Listings (i.e. brick-n-mortar shops) don't have access to a Links section like a "brand" page might? Seems strange not to let them link out to their social media assets while Coke and Ford have that privilege. I wonder why? Thanks!

Links for Local Search: Relevance or Proximity?
Hi Mozzers, In the best situation links for a local business should be relevant and come from a local organization, but this is not always possible. In cases where you have to choose between relevance and proximity which is more important?

Is my link structure hurting my SEO?
Moz says I have too many links on the homepage - could this be hurting my SEO? I have a lot of links on my homepage - especially from the services menu. I also have a few in the intro paragraph that are unnecessary but are linked to other pages using keywords - such as "veterinarians" which go to Meet our Veterinarians, etc. I'm afraid to make changes as I don't want to go overboard and actually hurt our rankings further. Any thoughts on this? Brant
