Is there any examples of comparing a competitors product to your own .
-
I'm working for a company that makes large touchscreen displays. I want to add some content to the site and target some competitor keywords by comparing some of our products to theirs. I know I've seen companies do this, I'm just trying to find a tasteful way to do this, and have it help bring in traffic.

I the examples Kristina offered.
It's really important to understand that integrating competitor product information into your site needs to be done artfully as much as scientifically.
Get the message wrong, and you expose the company to DMCA takedown vulnerability, as well as potential lawsuits for business-damaging misinformation, or worse, having governmental agencies come after you.
In other words, there are several "right" ways to go about it, and several "wrong" ways.
Please be sure a professional is involved in this process, whatever the "method" or "style" of your approach might be - someone who understands the legal issues involved enough to avoid those vulnerabilities.

Hi there,
I think this can be done a lot of ways, if you take the time to state your case well. Definitely don't pretend like you're a neutral party. Here are some examples:
- A heartfelt message from your founder: Balsam Hill vs Frontgate
- A press release: Comodo vs Norton
- A table of comparisons: Lose It!
- If you're the little guy, prove you're better: Bing It On (not that this one necessarily worked, but, it was interesting)
- Simply saying, "Why [company]?" which will capture some of those searches, without picking out a competitor Conductor
Hope these examples helped! I'll bet some other Mozzers will jump on with examples.
Best,
Kristina

Duplicate product description on the same page
Hello, I've got a really simple a basic question : is it an issue to put an excerpt of a text at the begining of a page, with a "jump to full text" link at the end of the excerpt ? So the first part of the text will be duplicated. A solution would be to hide a part of the text and reveal it with a "read more" button, but we don't want to do that, we want users to be able to read the full text just by scrolling + we want to put an excerpt "above-the-fold" content It's a product page. A second question : we've got duplicate content between our brand category pages, and the related product page, because the presentation text of the brand is shown on the product page + on the brand category page (it's presentations of distilleries, so it's a valuable content for the customer, we want to show it directly on the product page). Do you think it's a big issue ? Or maybe we can think : "ok, there is plenty of other text on those pages, so it won't matter" ?

Is it worth it to compete with a big competitor starting from scratch?
Dear all, I'd like to know if you think it'd be worth it to compete with a relatively big competitor (160k backlinks from 2.4k domains, citation flow 47, trust flow 43, class C IPs 1.2k) whose niche is however something I have sufficient knowledge of (how-tos and technology) starting from scratch. I am particularly interested because such domain exploits a niche language I have good fluency of (and in which there surely is somewhat less competition, particularly about how-tos and technology, compared to English). Until now I have managed a very small niche domain in my spare time (genre-specific music), which however being so specific, couldn't but have a modest amount of visitors even if ranking high on Google. On the other hand, it's been years I have been closely watching that domain I'd like to compete with (it has around 8k how-tos with good SEO but average or below average outdated content taken from various unquoted sorces, something I'd easily create myself in a few months worth of work, or even sooner with the help of a few collaborators, that domain itself is run by just a couple of people) and consistently ranks its how-tos and comparison on top positions in its niche, yielding most of its revenue in header bidding. Never seriously thought about competing in its niche until I heard about their last year's turnover, had the usual thought ("If I just did it myself! What was I thinking to?") and met a good coder I am grateful to and which I feel could be the right person to take care of the website's backbone. The template they use is nothing overly complicated, it just has the main optimizations one would use to decrease load time and not trigger Google with too many banners. The main doubts I have is if such a domain, having larger economic resources than me, could eventually sink mine (with techniques like giving me plenty of spammy backlinks or something like that) once it finds out I am competing and getting closer than they'd like, or since their texts are already quite good SEO'd, their strongest assurance could be that I'd have to sacrifice too many keywords in order to create my content without having my reworkings seem close enough to theirs to allow a lawsuit against me? Thank you Frank

Using Product Descriptions in Meta Description
Hi All We have over 10000 Products and a while ago we spent some time adding Product Descriptions to the Product Pages, For Example we have Product - Black Snazaroo Face Paint Product Description - Great for Childrens parties, fundraising events, Halloween or other festive faces. An easy makeup to apply and remove. All Snazaroo face paints are Non toxic, Fragrance free and Skin friendly. Snazaroo is suitable for all skin types, however it is always recommended you do a skin patch test on a small area before full application. Unfortuantly our Meta Descriptions really need some work, for example this same page contains the following meta descriptions We realise this could be holding our site back. Is it ok to use the same Product Description inside the Meta Description Tags also, for example can we use the Meta Description for this Page - Thanks

Simular product pages
I have 27000 products on my website, showed one by one on a separated webpage. Google index them almost all (+- 25000). But the SEOmoz report shows them as duplicated content. Indeed, most of the page is identical, only changing description and price of the product which is indeed not more than 2% of the total content of the page. On the bottom of the product page are shown the alternatives for this product, mainly other colors. So, within the same family of products that can have 50 products, the site creates 50 webpages showing the product and it's family. That's why nearly everything on the page is identical within this family of products. My guess is, as Google indexed them all, I should not worry about duplicated content. Is my guess correct? Thanks for a soon answer. Rik
