Issue with Category Ranking on Page 1 vs. Homepage Ranking on Page 2
-
A client has a high-volume keyword that is rendering different results, whether it is on page one or page two of Google SERPs. If the keyword is on page one, ONLY the category page is ranking. When the keyword bumps off to page two, BOTH the category AND the homepage are ranking. This is happening on our IP and theirs, incognito and personalized searches. This has been happening since February.
Any thought/insights would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!!

Hmmm ok - this could possibly be an architectural and/or internal linking issue confusing Google as to which page it should rank. Or maybe it's your keyword targeting on both pages. Would you say the subcategory page is more optimized/focused on the keyword than the homepage?
-
Hi Dan - Yes, it is a product subcategory for eCommerce vs. the homepage. I would definitely say the product subcategory is more relevant/better conversion rate, which is why the homepage showing up WITH the subcategory on page two is strange. And to be clear, this isn't happening all of the time, just some of the time.

To clarify - is this a product category for eCommerce or a blog category? I am assuming eCommerce product category. So the user is presented with a list of products in this category?
If so - what I would do is try to first determine which is better for users to land on. Does one get a higher conversion rate than the other? Which page is more relevant to the query?
-
- Thank you Dan! Without giving too much away about my client, the query is something like "descriptive adjective + product" like "petite dresses." It is in the apparel industry. I just checked in Google Search console (great idea!) and it looks like the query in question has navigated 926 clicks to the category page and 550 clicks to the homepage in the last month. So, both the homepage and the category pages are ranking for this keyword. It is so strange.

Hi Robert
Some others have given some great ideas. Wanted to chime in and ask if you can give any more info? It's tough to say what's going on in such a general context. Anything would help - industry, a URL, keywords.
Also, as Andy suggested - do you have other sources of data to back this up? I would suggest actually looking in Search Console (Webmaster Tools) for your query and landing page data and see if you can tell how much it's happening one way or the other. You can filter by country, device and time period to segment things even more.
Let us know if you can provide more info or find any more data!

I would improve the category page and enjoy!

Tough question. I have a high volume keyword for a client - a competitors name that I have a similar pattern with that I follow v closely. Very low CTR though. I am not sure of the parallels, but here goes. I have formed the view their are three key problems with our clients page. The first is the page loading speed fluctuates. The second is the content is not strong enough on the page - so people pogo stick off - some days they stick but most they bounce. The third is the page & domain authority are not strong enough.
I appreciate they are universal type answers. But the combination of all three or anyone explain the behavior I am observing. I actually think stickiness is the key factor to the search result staying at position 4, but until I eliminate the other two they form part of my differential diagnosis.
Not sure if that helps at all, but there you go.

Hi Robert,
Do you have any external tracking setup that would confirm this for you? I'm always very cautious with always trusting results from my own desktop and like to have these verified.

How often should I update the content on my pages?
I have started dropping on my rankings - due to lack of time after having a baby. I'm still managing to blog but I'm wondering if I update the content on my pages will that help? All my Meta tags and page descriptions were updated over a year ago - do I need to update these too? We were ranking in the top spots for a good few years, but we're slowly falling 😞 Please give me any advice to keep us from falling even further. I have claimed all my listings, and try to add new links once a month. I share my blog to all social sites and work hard to get Google reviews, we have 53 which is higher than any of our competitors. Any other ideas? Have I missed something that Google is looking for nowadays? Many thanks 🙂

Backlinks to internal pages help website to rank better or vice versa?
Hi Moz community, We have our backlinks mostly pointed to our homepage. We are trying to rank better and not having minimum number of backlinks to our internal pages is one of the things I worry about. Backlinks to homepage alone help in ranking internal pages or backlinks to internal pages help in ranking homepage? Or both required? Thanks

How is this possible? #2 ranking with NO on-page keywords, no backlinks, no sitemap...
Hi everybody. I have a question ... I'm totally stumped. This question is being asked today (November 16th, 2015) just after Google updated something in their algorithm. Nobody seems to know what they did. and it has something to do with the new "Rank Brain" system they're now using. My niche is Logo Design Software (https://www.thelogocreator.com). I had the keywords "logo creator" on the page roughly 7 times. After Google updated, I lost about 10 spots and as of this writing, I've dropped to #15. So, maybe I over optimized. fine. Noticing that for the keyword "logo creator" ... NONE of the top 14 spots actually have "logo creator" in their page title and NONE of them have more that 2 instances (if any) of the keyword "logo creator" on the actual page. So I removed ALL instances of my keyword "logo creator" from my home page - used the Webmaster's Fetch Tool and moved up a few spots instantly. So what the heck? And the #2 spot for that keyword is www.logomakr.com - they have NO words at all on their pages, no blog, no sitemap and far fewer links than anybody in the top 10. Can anybody reading this shed some light? Marc Marc Sylvester

Can Ecommerce help with Keyword Rankings?
I am curious to know if an ecommerce website plays a role in higher rankings. we have been struggling for some time on a term and all of our competitors have an online shopping cart. we have a custom magento website with a request a quote form as our products are very costly. (range from $500 - $250,000). Is there something we can add to the code to help boost our rankings?

SERP and SEO Moz ranking
Until a couple of months ago the predicted SEO Moz ranking for a specific keyword was fairly close to what I actually experienced with my website. However, since then the correlation has not been good. For example, according to SEO Moz I am ranked #1 for a specific keyword with google.ca and google.com yet my site actually shows up consistently at #3 for that keyword. Has anyone else noticed this divergence?

Can AJAX implementation affect the rankings in Google Panda?
Hi there, I have the following situation with one of our job sites. We migrate the site to a new application, which is better from design point of view and also usability. For this we use a lot AJAX especially in searches. So every time a user is filtering down their search new results will be shown on the page, at the same url and with no page load. But, having this implementation. affected Bounce rate - which increased from 38% to nearly 60%, PI/visits - which are now half, at 3 and also Avg Time on Site is half that is used to be coming to 2,5 min from nearly 6 min. From Rand post, it is clearly that the content is very important in Google Panda, and all of these parameters we should consider, as it is telling the quality of the content. So, my question will be, can this site be hit by Panda updates (maybe later on) because Bounce Rate, PI/Visits and Avg Time on site, decreased in such way? At the moment we don't measure the Ajax impresion, but as I understood that we can do that though virtual pages in GA, does anyone of you have the experience how to handle this? Won't be this an artificial increase? Thanks, Irina

Why is a link considered active, but is no longer on the page?
How come links sometimes show up in OSE or Yahoo Site Explorer and then when you go to the page, they're not there anymore? Why is a link indexed or considered active but is no longer on the page?
