Why would a business want to cap their Adwords budget?
-
If a business has an unlimited supply of product and an unlimited capacity to distribute that product why would they want to limit their Adwords campaign budget?
If your Cost per Acquisition for a conversion is lower than the Customer Lifetime Value for any given keyword bid, why would you want to prevent your campaign from reaching as many people as possible?
Thanks in advance
Danny

Thanks Jasmine
Great answer and one to which I can completely relate.
I have been consulting now for approx. five years. One of the things I have found interesting is the degree to which so many businesses hamper their own growth through pointless bureaucracy, internal politics and employees who put their personal career progression above the needs of their employer.

While I do agree that there are difficulties in explaining the value to clients, the most common reasons I have come up across are accounting & cash flow.
When I was managing agency side and I just wanted an additonal $1000/mo (which seems like nothing for most advertisers), there was significant push back. One reason is the client is not only footing the bill for their account, they are also footing the agency bill. There could be added costs when expanding budgets depending on the pricing structure, and everyone wants everything as cheap as they can get it. So if the added cost of the agency + the added cost on the business for the advertising is too much in comparison to the budget the business had put forward for the year, then there is no way they can plan on spending more.
In addition to this, if you are working with smaller businesses, they don't have the flexibility in their cash flow to spend more even when there is a proven opportunity. Not to mention, advertising is very likely not the only bill they are paying each month. They have all the costs associated from man power to tools & software internally to operational overhead. They might say their profit is $65/item but it might actually be more like $15 after everything else is accounted for. Which is poor planning and communication from your client.
If you are working with a larger or public company, accounting requires that you bring in X amount of money (because Stock Market or Parent Company, or Investors, etc). If you are advertising based on LTV (lifetime value) not New Sales, then the accounting team doesn't see the same return you are assuming you are getting. It appears to the accounting team that you are overspending and not getting the same value on more cost compared to previous years.
But, take your client out for a beer if you can. Get them to unload on you about the issues and tribulations that they are coming up across internally or if the company does have a cash flow issue. There are real business reasons behind not spending more, and it might be as minor as "we are exploring another channel that is proving to be quite costly right now" and wont' have anything to do with you or your work.
Good luck! This is the hard part of consulting

Hi Danny,
IMO in such case we need to educate the client that by limited budget campaign loosing Impression Share, loosing clicks, loosing conversion.
Having enough budget will allow us to always be shown throughout the day or time we need to be shown. A very strong reason why most campaigns fail is due to the ads not being shown throughout the day since they are limited by budget. This results in lost impression share which means lost clicks, which means lost potential leads or sales.
In short Lost Impression Share, Lost Clicks, Lost Conversions = Campaign Failure
Thanks

**It comes down to having data demonstrating the value and properly communicating this with the client. **
That makes perfect sense when starting out. I hold the opinion that many if not most businesses are not able to make a profit at PPC given the competitiveness of PPC and the cost advantages (shipping, inventory, labor efficiency, etc) of large companies. If you don't do careful math you can happily bid yourself into bankruptcy.
So, telling the client to test with a budget amount to prove that they can make a profit makes sense. But once that is demonstrated they should not be budgeting.
The only exception (and this is not a budget) is when you are looking for the sweet spont of "maximum profit per day". That is the intersction of sales volume and bid costs that has the highest yield per unit of time.

It comes down to having data demonstrating the value and properly communicating this with the client. Without good data, it's difficult to show the value. Even if you had this data, communicating this value can be difficult because acquisition costs can easily exceeds CLV in the short term (as CLV will hopefully grow). Once there is a tipping point (where CLV exceeds acquisition costs) it's much easier to show value. So clients may see a short-term loss and attempts to minimize their exposure by capping their ppc budget.

I don't doubt you guys at all but I would really love to know if there is any alternative (and logical) point of view on this.
Budget capping is so prevalent here in the UK and with businesses of all sizes that I worry that I might be giving clients the wrong advice.
-
When they stop bidding, they are making opportunity for all of their competitors. I hope that this weakness of mind persists. They should be trying to run us out of business.
-
Out of fear (of something new) and not understanding. As most of us know, educating some SMB's on the benefits of an uncapped budget is a chore and many are not receptive on learning about it. On the flip side, this works to the benefit of others that do not cap their budget.

LOL

I must be missing something here.
Danny. You are right. Bet on yourself. Bet big.
-
That was my first instinct, but considering how many agencies are working with capped campaign budgets there must surely be some other explanation?
I must be missing something here

Is it possible to link two sites' Search Console to Adwords?
My company is a healthcare organization that has two brands, one that's our 'system' and is mainly adult health services and the other is pediatric only focused care. Both have separate websites. Our SEM is managed by an outside agency. We're in the process of linking our Google Search Consoles to the Adwords account. Our GSC has both of the sites as separate properties, but the Adwords account has all of the campaigns for both brands under one account. Is it possible to link both of the GSC properties in the Adwords account to be able to get accurate information for the Paid & Organic report in Adwords?

Adwords - Mobile Checkbox
Hi Everyone, I am looking to optimize my adwords campaigns and have been pondering how to handle the checkbox for "Mobile" on the standard Text Ads. (My ecommerce website is fully responsive.) If i want to create 1 Ad for each ad group and have that ad displayed on desktops as well as mobile devices, should i be checking the "Mobile" checkbox? Is it best practice to create 2 ads per ad group that are identical except have 1 with Mobile checked and 1 without? Please let me know how you guys typically set this up. Thanks

Adwords campaign and adgroup ideas
When it comes to SEO, I can do that. When it comes to adwords I tend to scratch my head. No idea why, I just do. Anyways I want to get some ideas of how I can setup a killer campaign and structure it and target relevant keywords. Here is my description of my business We are a private christian school providing preschool, elementary and highschool. We are located in Henderson, NV but service Las Vegas, NV as well. We have some of the highest scores and accolades in Nevada so we pride ourselves with those and feel we should target that. So far when it comes to structure I have come up with this setup Campaigns Henderson adgroups Preschool Top Keywords preschool Example Keywords preschools in henderson, nv preschools in henderson nevada preschool henderson nv preschool henderson nevada top rated Example Keywords top rated preschools in henderson nv top rates preschools in henderson nevada best Example Keywords best preschool in henderson nv best preschool in henderson nevada Elementary Top Keywords private school Example Keywords Elementary private schools in henderson nv Elementary private schools in henderson nevada Elementary private school in henderson nv Elementary private school in henderson nevada top rated Example Keywords top rated elementary private school in henderson nv top rated elementary private school in henderson nevada best Example Keywords best elementary private school in henderson nv High School Top Keywords private school top rated best Las Vegas adgroups Preschool Elementary High School I didn't finish the rest because you should get the point. I don't know if these are exact keywords, I just know that private school, top rated and best tend to be what people type. Then each adgroup will get a relevant ad pertaining to those keywords. Am I going overbaord? or is this a good start?

Can I pass keyword match type through the Adwords dest URL?
Hi guys, I'm currently using duplicates of the same keyword with different match types, and I'd like to pass the keyword match type through the query, the same way I can pass the keyword and creative. ie. http://my.site.com/?kw={keyword}&kwmt={matchtype}&aid={creative} As far as I can tell, Google allows you to pass the keyword, creative (ad id), network and a mobile flag. Microsoft allows you to pass the match type and and ad id, and I want to be able to do the same in my Adwords. Is this is possible, or is the only way to create different ad groups for each match type and pass a custom query? Cheers, Jez

Wordwatch Software: PPC Adwords campaign managers heard of, tried, or actively using this?
I've been trialing WordWatch for about a month. I'll admit I've been skeptical from the start. I don't quite understand the results they're delivering or how it works. So I did a search for "Wordwatch review" hoping someone out there could shed some light or help me decide whether this software was worth keeping. But all I can find are two suspicious and badly written posts, immediately raising red flags. (Penuguin should have eliminated crap sites using the Flesch-Kincaid reading level, but I digress.) **Wordwatch premise: **They take over keyword bidding to maximize budgets and clicks. They monitor the Adwords campaign to find an "optimal" bid price. Two questions about this premise: How is it different than using the Google settings for optimize for clicks or conversions? Since Google Adwords is based on a Vickery auction, wouldn't lowering my bid only lower my position? Bearing everyone has the same QS, then lowering my bids to the range between 2 positions does not increase my actual cost. I have Wordwatch enabled for a few of my campaigns. Their interface leaves a lot to be desired. They don't report the activity or the changes they make to the campaigns from the dashboard. I had to go into my Adwords Change History to track what they were doing. And lo and behold they're also adding long tail keywords to my ad groups. Bottom line I didn't notice any huge impact, and I don't see how it's better than Google's own version of campaign settings. I don't know that they're really legit. But their marketing was so convincing, and they raised $1.4M that I need other opinions. Any one with some pro/cons, or yay/nays?

Super weird stuff in Adwords!
Sup people, Check this out, I found a keyword from the search query report in Adwords, its had over the last month 120,000 impressions and its long tail ish (4 words). Now when I check the keyword tool it says less then 10, when I check Google insights nothing. So I check if EMD is free and it is, so now im really interested! Speak to Google account manager about it he says yeah its super weird, checks account to make sure its not coming from display network and it isn't, so we add the keyword from search query report as a exact match and let it run, this is the second day, yestarday when we added it it done 4000 impressions, today so far its done 500. Whats the score, does it sound like it is doing the traffic or do you think its some sort of bug in Adwords as other tools (keyword tool, Google insights) dont show the same result. The only thing I can think of is, its just kicked in on Google suggestions but not 100% other then that I don't know.
