Should You Buy Your Name in Adwords?
-
While I definitely see the pros to buying your name in Adwords, should you still do this if you have a small monthly budget? I get why large companies like Tiffany's would buy their name because they have the excessive funds to do so in addition to buying keywords. Any guidance or strategy on this?

There's basically two ways to look at it and John is right - testing is key.
Getting new business is critical obviously and if they're not yet bidding on your brand then I'd focus there BUT it's worse to pay for that first click and then lose the visitor when they find a competitor on the second query. So if your competitors are bidding on your brand you need to grab it, the cost per click is less and you can't afford to lose the conversion after you're paid for the first click but you of course don't want to use some of the limited budget on a second click if you could have had it organically.
Then there comes the discussion over the cost to monitor competitor activities vs the cost of just bidding on the brand. If it costs more to manage it and monitor then just bidding would be the way to go obviously.
Worse case you can test bidding on your brand and monitor the assisted conversions to see how that works out for you.

Two things:
Do you have access to similarweb? If you have a small budget, targeting the referral traffic of competitors for a client can be the cheapest starting point.
Secondly why not test taking brand name adwords offline for two weeks - with the new budget target some new keywords and see what happens to conversions?

Ok thanks, these are all very insightful responses. To answer your questions, these are brand names and yes people are searching the names to find the companies. And my whole theory was if we have a small budget, then we should just focus on attracting new business. However I do know that competitors ARE buying all competitor names in the industry, but I also know they have larger budgets to work with.
On a side note, my other concern is that people search for a generic keyword, click on our client's ad, then leave, and then decide to google that their brand name later and click on the ad and then convert. Is there a way to target those types of people?

I agree with Dave above if budget is limited. You are not attracting new customers with bidding on your brand name, just keeping current customers happy with an easy click. That said if you have a reasonable budget it is almost part of doing business as usually your competitors will bid on your brand name if you are not.
-
Part of what I'd be asking is whether your competitors are bidding on your name. If no one is bidding on your brand name and your site comes up #1 organically then it might be best to put the budget to new visitor acquisition whereas if your competitors are bidding on your brand then you need to protect it.
There area lot of moving parts to the questions but based on the limited information, that's how I'd look at it.

Google Adwords Clicks not registering properly???
Hello Moz World, I am running a Google Adwords campaign utilizing Google Search and Search Partners only. These are traditional text ads. When I look at the analytics through Google Adwords, I am seeing 60 clicks. Great! However, when I look through the keywords in the ad groups, none of my keywords are registering clicks. I also checked search terms under the keyword tab, and no keywords are populating. Where are my ads being clicked, and how can I view information on these clicks. This is a relatively new campaign, and I am still trying to figure out if I am targeting the right keywords. Thanks ahead of time for all the great responses! B/R Will H.

Locate Poorly Trending Keywords in AdWords
At the campaign level I see my CTR has been suffering for the last week or two relative to the past few months. It could be a few bad actors casing the downward trend. How can I quickly and easily locate specific keywords that are trending in the wrong direction? Why filters will not work... They don't take change into account. I want to identify Keywords that were once doing well are now doing poorly. Filters will yield all keywords that are doing poorly which is not what I'm looking for. Obviously I could be missing something with filters but this is my understanding. A few other points to note... I have search partners turned on. I do not want to take this traffic into account in my analysis. I'd also like to determine if it might be an ad that's not performing as well as it once was. I assume the same method used to find poorly trending keywords can be applied to ads as well but if not, is there a solution for this?

AdWords/Analytics Paid Search conversions not matching up - any idea why?
Hi all, Any ideas as to why AdWords and Analytics are showing different Paid Search conversion numbers for me when I check on a daily basis? Both accounts are linked, they share the same destination URLs to trigger a conversion, some days each reflects the same amount of conversions, then some days it's anything from 1-5 conversions different (Analytics is always the one to show more). Thanks M

Trademarked words in in Google Adwords ads - Why do competitors get to use them?
Hi, The keyword I want to use in my ad is trademarked, so they disqualified my ad. The trademark was specifically cited as the reasoning. I tried this across maybe 5 different ads. All disqualified The thing I don't understand is that there are like 10 other advertisers who are actively using this "trademarked" word in their ads. It's not like 1 scooted past Google, there's a ton of advertisers doing it. So how do I get past them or were they grandfathered in or something? FYI... I tried dynamic insert to see if that could my "trademarked" word in the back door, but no luck. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Competitors using bots for AdWords ?
I was having a discussion with a SEO manager on a LinkedIn group about page speed (she pretends that page speed is not taken into account by Google for SERPs at all and claims that all of what Matt Cutts says is BS) ; and she explained that she is using bots to click on her client's competitors AdWords and "kill their daily budget" So my question is, if you run/manage AdWords campaigns, have you ever met noticed such a behaviour, past the few usual click fraud rate ? What is your average fraud rate ?
