Google maps listings

Hi all, I just wondered what determines the company listings that are displayed in maps. From what I can see any businesses highlighted in these lists have optimised Google Places pages and it doesn't seem to be based on general ranking as these lists seem different to the general SERPS.
Any thoughts at all appreciated. Pls see attached image.
Also, is there anything other than optimise your Places listing that might help ensure you are seen in these results?

Many thanks, all extremely helpful information! It's really appreciated.
This all gives me some food for thought and it also looks like I've got some work to do!
Thanks again.

Hi David,
So glad you asked, as we've just released the 2015 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, which should help give you the most comprehensive possible picture of the factors that are believed to most influence both local and local/organic rankings:
https://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors
These factors are also applicable to Maps, so a thorough study of the survey should be helpful.

Hey David,
A few things here, if I recall the ones that are showing up highlighted are sometimes ones you have seen or done a search for.
As for your map listing there is lots you can do. The most important things to do is the following:
Do local listings on yelp and other sites.
Insure you have the same address and business name on everything including your website. Little things like Street and St can be seen as different.
Put a google map on your website with the same address.
Ask your customers to do reviews. Be careful don't to do them yourself as Google does check lots of reviews from the same IP address.
These things can help get your map moving up.

Hi.
Make sure your Business G+ is optimized, all info is consistent through different local listings and the website. Also, it won't hurt to link G+ and website contact page. Do use structured data to help Google understand who and what you are.
I do believe that organic search rankings have a positive effect too. If you're ranking in first three spots and you have G+ optimized, you'll most definitely be in local results as well.
Cheers.

Mapping the Google My Business locations I manage?
Is there a way to see all of the business locations I manage on a map, so it's easy to visualize and check? Like a Google Custom map, but I don't want to create a custom map because then I'd be updating information in two places. I thought this would be a built-in feature of Google My Business but I can't seem to find any information about this. Thanks! -Ryan

Why my logo is showing in map pack results
I run the SEO for a multi-location retail company. All of our locations, except one, show our cover photo from GMB in the map pack in the other city the logo shows up. Why would that happen and how can I change it? My competitors have much more attention-grabbing pics than a logo.

How can I change my Google Business to be a non local business?
Hey guys, Do you know how to change my Google business account to be a non local business? I want my Google Knowledge Graph to be clean and neat like this. Does it mean that this company doesn't claim the business? Will removing the address from the Google My Business solve it (which I don't know whether we can take down the address)? Thanks

Pictures on Google Local not ours
Hi all- We recently had some pictures show up on our local profile that are not our store. When you click on them they have links to someone's blog as well. Can someone tell me how these got here and more importantly how to get rid of them. We've looked everywhere but can't find them to get rid of. Thanks for any help! Ken

Opt out from certain Google properties - what's the downside?
Hi Moz Community! I manage a site where we want to have a support phone number for certain cases, but not for it to be front and centre for all our customers. At the moment, most of our unwanted call volume comes through the number showing up in SERPs due. We haven't included it in any of our listings, but it seems that Google has included it due to its presence on our site. We are now considering using the "Opt out from certain Google properties" tool on Google Webmasters but are concerned that by not playing by Google's rules that we may face some sort of penalty. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/opt-out Does anyone have any experience of using this tool or any thoughts on potential risks to our search rankings? Thank you!

What to do with duplicate Listings for Business in Moz Local Tool?
Hi Everyone! Just another newbie Local SEO looking for a solution. I was searching my business listing in Moz Local and it returned two addresses.

Listing #1: 925 B Street #402 San Diego, CA 92101, 67623
Listing #2: 925 B St, #402, San Diego, CA, 92101 Do I need to remove the listing with two zip codes showing up? (I don't see any of my profiles showing up with two zip codes though.) Listing #2 is accurate yet the local moz tool tells me that my Google+ page is 69% complete. How is it possible that Listing #1 scored a 97% complete on Google+? Would you recommend putting the suite number in Address Line 1 or separated in Line 2? Does it even matter? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!0 -
Confusion and Issues With Google Places + Google Plus for Business
Hi all, I'm currently dealing with the frustration between our Google Places page and Google Plus for Business. I know, it's not an uncommon issue, so I'm hoping there's an easy fix to mine! I am currently dealing with 2 Google accounts and 2 businesses. Each business has 2 locations. Each account has 1 location of each business. Obviously this isn't ideal. 😕 A few questions: 1. Each account has already been setup with a personal Google Plus page. Will this interfere or cause any issue when I claim the existing Google Places businesses for a Google Plus for Business? 2. Once I have verified the Google Plus for Business page, I can then merge it with our standard Google Places page, correct? 3. Is the merging only for control/login and dashboard settings? Will there still be 2 separate pages/URLs? 4. If someone +1's our Google Places page, does this reflect on our Plus page, or vice/versa? 5. Is there a way to assign these listings to different accounts/logins without deleting the listing and creating them fresh again? I'm assuming no, but would love to hear of a solution! Thanks a lot!
