What's the best SEO tactics when you have a dedicated web address pointing to a page on a different site?
-
Hope someone can help with a question I've got about sorting out some duplicate content issues.
To simplify the question, imagine there is a website a.com which has a page a.com/newslettersignup. In addition to the a.com domain, there is also a different web address, ashortcut.com, which points to a.com/newslettersignup.
ashortcut.com is the web address that is advertised in marketing material etc.
So what is the best way then to tell Google etc. that ashortcut.com is the preferred URL for the page which sits at a.com/newslettersignup?
The advice I've read about the canonical tag, for example, doesn't cover this exact scenario so although it can support cross-domain information, I'm not sure if that's the best route to follow.
Thanks!

Cheers Nick. It's more the SEO benefit rather than the stats that I'm interested in, but that's a handy reminder to bear in mind stats too!

Thanks Antonio. In this case. ashortcut.com has keywords in its domain name whilst a.com doesn't, so that's a shame but good to know there's nothing that can be done.

Hi Mark,
You could use a canonical tag on the shortcut URL but what I would really suggest you do is redirect the shortcut with a tracking parameter. This way all your traffic stays on your main site but you can still track your marketing efforts.
example: ashortcut.com --> 301 redirects --> a.com/newslettersignup?ashortscut.com
just make sure that the a.com/newslettersignup URL self canonicals so that any parameter based URLs don't get indexed as duplicate content.

If I understood, ashortcut.com always redirect to some a.com page. If this is correct, unfortunatelly Google will rank a.com page instead ashortcut.com, as the ashortcut.com page is a redirection pointing to a.com/newslettersignup.
If ashortcut.com isn't a redirection and you just duplicated the pages, yes, the option would be a rel canonical tag on both pages pointing to ashortcut.com. You should determine which domain/page has more relevancy from an SEO POV, so using Open Site Explorer from Moz will be helpful (maybe ashortcut.com doesn't have more Page Authority than a.com/newslettersignup
Let me know if I miss something.

Best site structure for us?
Hey guys, I have a somewhat silly question that I probably know the answer to - but would still like to hear your POV's. We're a WP theme making company but we also build other stuff. Context: 1. All demos for themes currently go under domain.com/Theme_A/ The demo is lorem ipsum so is marked noindex nofollow. That being said we get rocking analytics data usually (not sure if it's still valuable for G after the noindex). 2. Currently we need landing pages for themes and we're running them under domain.com/Theme_A/optimized-landing-page-title.php dofollow and indexed ofc. My question is...Would we be better off to include all landing pages under a domain.com/wordpress-themes/ category/tax and then go for the optimized-landing-page-title.php page? Does it make any difference either or? Right now we're not REALLY running them on subdomains (though the structure seems like it), they're just folders. We're thinking that more seo juice would flow through the different pages if we have them all under the same category, rather than basically starting from scratch each time under a new folder. Right? Thanks!!!

Putting review aggregation in product's navigation
Do you guys think it's a bad idea to put a review aggregation page in a product's navigation? Such as: "Which Brand of Men's Shampoo Is Best for You?" Rand suggests against it in this Whiteboard Friday as it interferes with a product's funnel, but I wonder if including it in navigation will give a domain and that page increased authority for a head keyword, such as "men's shampoo." What do you guys think?

Does anyone know of an api for on site SEO?
I have searched for one, but really cannot find one that fits my needs. I am looking at making an on site grader / service that will check pages and point out SEO problems. One that I have found that I like is seorch.eu but they do not have an api. I do not want to reinvent the wheel if I do not have to. Also, the api does not have to be free, or it does not even have to be an api, it can be a self hosted application too.

Can Page Authority of a site be higher than its Domain Authority?
I own a website called Takeyourtips.com. While doing a search no Google, I found that the page authority of the home page (31) is higher than the domain authority (23). I was wondering if it's really possible because my understanding was page authority of a page is determined by its domain authority. Therefore, it the domain authority of a website is 23, none of its page could have a higher page authority. Plus, upon consulting an SEO expert, I was told that neither Domain Authority or Page Authority of a page carries any importance as far as higher ranking of a website is concerned. Is this true? Thanks in advance for the answers. Cheers, Sushant large
