Measure impact from new meta descriptions
-
Hi guys,
I'm looking to implement new meta descriptions across a site and i want to measure the impact.
So far I'm thinking of extracting the CTR data from GWT for the last 90 days to get the most accurate CTR averages for each URL. Then once the new meta descriptions have been implemented, compare the CTR with the old CTR averages accross URLs.
Do you think this would be the most accurate way of measuring the impact?
Cheers,
Chris

Hey Chris,
I recently did the same thing, I looked at traffic from organic to the specific pages I changed the meta descriptions for. I did 20 for my top sellers and 20 for my slow sellers and watched for incremental increases YoY and WoW through GA. I did see increases although small, will impact my overall traffic in bulk - I have educated the rest of the business and now we write better meta descriptions.
Although your method seems sound and as Matt said ultimately you want to make sure you are converting those people too.
All the best,
K

If you have goal tracking set up, it may make sense to compare conversions as well. While I like to use meta desc to improve CTR, I'd much rather improve conversions. If I can get someone to click through AND take action, that's the best meta desc.
Step 1 - CTR
Step 2 - Conversion/Goal Conversion
If your CTRs are super-low, improving them may not help conversion a ton. If they're already decently high, you may only see a small increase but you could double conversions. I think using the two together makes the most sense.

Highly ranked pages to new domain?
Hi everyone! We are ranked #1 for about 30 product pages at www.oldsite.com/product1 and we are wanting to move about 30 of those pages to a new site www.newsite.com/product1 (new domain and hosting - which we own). What is the best way to do this? I'm confused if you recreate those pages on the new domain vs. ftp move them, 301 re-directs, etc. Looking for the things we must do and the sequence to do it all, etc. Thanks so much!

New page disappeared from the ranks, under dubious circumstances
I've had an odd situation happen today. Published a blog post and it ranked No 6 within 2 or 3 hours, just come back now (About 12 hours later) and it has completely vanished! I have checked to page 9, and used a couple of keyword tools and it appears nowhere! It didn't have any back links, but it was unique and high quality. I have checked on the page does still exist and it is still readable. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Not alt tags but Title and description Meta: My designer's answer.
Hello! I was busy doing lots of key wording for my images which I hate and notices that when viewed in source code, the different places I inputed information translated into Title and Description meta tags but NO alt tags. As I'm a a photographer, it's really important to me that I make the most of my images to get increased traffic so I challenged the people behind my website about it. This is their response to the question: "We all know how important the alt tags are for image SEO so why does

the design allows Title, Description and Keyword image tags but not alt
tags?" Unfortunately, there is no way to add an alt tag and title tag specifically to an image display page. However, as you have pointed out here, we use other elements that essentially accomplish the same thing. Each image display page does have its own page title and meta description, as you have also noticed. For the title, we use the IPTC Headline field (if there is no headline, then we use IPTC Title, and if there is no title, then we go to file name), and for the meta description, we use both the IPTC caption as well as the keywords - so all of that information is embedded on the image display page with the image itself and search engines can index this content. Alt Text data intends to given contextual information to search engines when they crawl your site, and the IPTC metadata that shows along with your images, does this as well." What is your opinion on that answer?0 -
Redirecting a working dynamic URI to a new static format
Hi all I am having some issues rearding url rewrites and 301 redirects with 1 and 1 hosting and am unsure of the best approach. The website is a custom made shopping cart system with categories and products. The current urls for categories are : index.php?l=product_list&c=1 The new url format required is : /banner-stands After a little bit of research I added the following into the htaccess file; Options +FollowSymlinks

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^banner-stands/?$ index.php?l=product_list&c=1 [R=301,NC,L] Which works but I have a few questions Question 1: Is this the best approach as there are 55 categories and 179 products to write redirects for Question 2: Or is it better to firstly add id=banner-stands into the url and then create 301 redirects to the new url and then rewrite the url. Rankings Up instantly after publishing new blog article
Hello All, My question is, why did my site rankings go up all of a sudden as soon as I published an article in my blog and it gets indexed (almost immidiately) The rankings increase are the following Keyword 1: from Top 5 to Top 1 Keyword 2: from Top 4 to Top 2 Keyword 3: from Top 16 to Top 3 Keyword 4: from no where to Page 2 (big time keyword) Any ideas or experience on this? When it first happened early this week(i published a new article), my site rankings dropped back after a couple of days. I did the same pattern by pubishing a new article and it went back up again. No personalized result here btw. Thank you

How often do you refresh meta descriptions? And does refreshing meta descriptions help in ranking?
1. And does refreshing meta descriptions help in ranking? 2. How often do you refresh meta descriptions? I am not sure whether it's a new feature, but I noticed this little time stamp on one of the search results, it says 1 day ago, and the website ranked quite high. So is there any correlation here? o4JIw.png

Should I Host New Blog On Different Server?
I am planning on starting a new blog focused on a very specific subject that is related to my current Lead Generation website. I am doing this because I want to build rankings for this site and have it link back to my Lead Generation website to increase its rankings (this is the main purpose). My question is do I need to host it on another server so Google will not see it as having the same IP or Subnet? Note: I already have one blog linked to my Lead Generation website under the same domain. This new blog would be linked to an entirely different domain.
