URL structure of international hotel website
-
Hai all,
Question about URL structure of international hotel website in Amsterdam: hotelcitadel.nl.
Some information:
- Target group are mainly english speaking guests from UK and US. Besides that guests from the Netherlands and some other countries.
- Website in 6 languages.
- No geo-targetting; just language targetting with hreflang annotations.
Current situation:
hotelcitadel.nl = dutch language version and hotelcitadel.nl/en = english language version
We are thinking about changing this to:
hotelcitadel.nl would become english version and hotelcitadel.nl/nl would become the dutch version.
Reason: root domain hotelcitadel.nl has by far the most links, and making the root domain the english version could help the rankings in english speaking countries like UK and US.
What do you think, would this be a wise idea?
Regards, Maurice

Great Stephan, nice to hear and thanks again

Hi Maurice,
Yes, that's right: the Hotel Nicolaas site is behaving correctly. When I visit the homepage there, everything is consistent and in English, and the language cookie is set to en-GB. Even when I manually change that cookie value to nl-NL, the content is still in English, because I'm on an English-language URL. To get Dutch content I have to visit the /nl/ directory. That's a much better setup, because there's no way to end up with duplicate English-language content: the URLs are consistent.
Best Regards,
Stephan

Hai Stephan,
Thanx again, very helpfull!
I still have 1 question concerning point 2.
Some months ago we rebuilt the website of a “sisterhotel”: www.hotelnicolaas.nl . As far as I can check the website of this hotel does not have the problems/strange behavior anymore as you discribe concerning www.hotelcitadel.nl Is that correct? Is the website of www.hotelnicolaas.nl behaving correctly concerning the languages?
(You will notice that we already changed the URL-structure there and that the homepage is the English version. We still have to add x-default.)
Regards, Maurice

Hi Maurice,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. To address points 2 and 3 that you've raised there:
2. I'm still seeing this behaviour on the site, and it persists across different browsers. I've attached some images to show what I'm seeing. However, if I then click on the English flag (to visit /en/), and then click the Netherlands flag, a cookie is set: jfcookie[lang]="nl". After this cookie is set, the homepage appears in Dutch for me. So it seems as though visitors to the homepage of your website are served English-language content based on the absense of a jfcookie[lang] cookie, or based on their IP address -- you would have to check with your developers which is the case -- and it's only after visiting one of the other languages and then switching back to Dutch that the homepage will appear in Dutch.
3. I don't believe you would see a rankings boost from doing this. I think that, provided x-default is correctly set (to English, in your case), and this issue with the language cookies/IP address is corrected, you can expect Google to figure out the correct page to show in the results for each country/language combination. I do hear what you're saying about most of your customers speaking English, but I also think that, given you use a ccTLD, it could create a strange user experience to have English content on the homepage and Dutch in a subfolder. And x-default largely solves the problem of most of your users speaking English. I don't think there's enough upside to justify the effort.
-
Hai Stephan,
Thanks for your suggestions.
- Add the x-default is a good idea. I’ll do that.
- Difference HTML lang and hreflang: I do not see this problem. Homepage hotelcitadel.nl: HTML=nl and content is written in dutch and not in english…Am I seeing something else then you do?
- Just to be sure that I understand you correct: What do you think about my proposed change of URL’s, wise? Will it make our website stronger for rankings in the english speaking market? Or better to leave it as it is?
Cheers, Maurice

Hi Maurice,
Both of these pages are on the same root domain, because you've (sensibly) used subfolders for languages, instead of subdomains. The arrangement you're thinking of switching to does sound as though it better describes target market: it'd be nice to see x-default set to english, if that's the language spoken by the majority of your visitors/target market.
When I visit the homepage as Googlebot, the hreflang is "nl", but the html lang is "en". Also, the page content appears to be in English. When I then navigate to hotelcitadel.nl/en, I get exactly the same English-language content, with html lang equal to "en" again, and hreflang "en".
The other languages work OK, and are crawlable, but you should correct the duplicate content issue between the homepage and the /en/ subfolder, and also the discrepancy between "html lang" and "hreflang" on the homepage. It should either be definitively in English, for all users, or definitively in Dutch. Perhaps you're using an IP redirect to determine language on the homepage? If so, I'd suggest not doing that. Your other languages seem to be set up OK.

International corporate SEO - menu and preferences
Hi all, for internationalization we have used subfolders structure (e.g. domain.com/us/) and since we have approx 150 countries to cover, then country selector is quite a link-base, especially if pages itself can have even several hundreds of internal links as well. Currently, all links to other countries are set as rel="nofollow" and I'm planning to change them to "follow" to distribute a juice. Do you please have an experience with such internal links voluminous websites and this follow/nofollow settings? Also we are having and issue with other countries outperforming local search. So for example in US, searching for kind of "Brand America" keyword, our UK branch outperforms US. Hreflangs are set in the sitemaps and each branch (country) is set in search console correctly as well. Since there are some issues with sitemaps (e.g. not actual links, or links returning 404), I assume that google is not using these sitemaps therefore hreflang information is lost as well. Am I correct ? thank you in advance, Tom

'Mini' versions of our website for overseas markets. Does it matter?
Hi Guys. I work for an e-commerce site called TOAD Diaries, we make bespoke diaries and journals. In essence we allow people to design their own diary online, then we make it and send it. We have already sold some products to poeple in many European countries, (Malta, France, Germany) but we want to have a better online presence for those overseas markets. So….. We're want to do an overseas ‘test case’, to see if we can sell more products in Europe. Out thinking is this: We’ll buy a subdomain for a specific country. Then we’ll then build a ‘mini’ version of our site in the appropriate language. This be a country specific landing page with links to our ‘design your own diary’ pages, basket and checkout. All in the language we’re targeting. Question: Will having such a small number of pages in the targeted countries language effect out ability to rank well? It will be maybe 10 – 15 pages in size. Or is it much more to do with on page optimization and quality backlinks? i.e) the site's size has no impact. What other factors should we consider when trying to rank well in other European countries? Many thanks in advance.

301 juice from my old website to the new one?
Hi there! I am the proud webmaster of two websites, my old one: bioenergeticaconvicen.wordpress.com, currently with decent rankings in Google Spain (as bioenergeticaconvicen.com without the www, if i am not mistaken) on keywords like "Bioenergetica", "bioenergetica barcelona" "formacion en bioenergetica" "bioenergetica transpersonal" -You got the idea. 🙂 and my new one, "www.biomayeutika.org" , wordpress as well, with somehow decent rankings on "centro de bioenergetica" "bioenergetica" etc. It's a health an spiritual business: we dance, breath and mainly just feel our bodies without trying to control anything that happens. Cool 🙂 It's a very local business, aiming mostly for people from Barcelona/Catalonia but also for people from the rest of Spain. a) I guess my main question is just how to pass the old "SEO juice" to the new website. Currently, there's just a link on the old one pointing to the new one. b) Will I somehow merge the rankings of the two? c) How do i do a 301? which pages? With a wordpress plugin? Thanks very much in advance for your help. P.D.: Secondarily, I am open to suggestions on how to improve my SEO strategy (currently, none :)) I am very active in Facebook and have a few good videos and pictures, but I haven't really tried to do good SEO.

Homepage URL for multi-language site
Hi, We are setting up a new site, and currently considering the URL and folder structure of the site. We will have 2-3 different language versions, and we have decided to use sub folders for this. My question is regarding the homepage URL. We want the English language site (en) to be the default one, from where you can then change the language. Should I have a folder for each of the language versions (as described below)? www.mydomain.com/en

(this would be the default page where everyone would always come if they type www.mydomain.com to webrowser) www,mydomain.com/ru www.mydomain.com/es Or, would it be better for SEO to have www.mydomain.com as the default URL where we would have the English version of the site, and then have two other folders (as below) where we would have the 2 other language versions: www,mydomain.com/ru www.mydomain.com/es Thank you in advance, BR Sam0 -
Showing different content according to different geo-locations on same URL
We would like our website to show different content according to different Geo-locations (but in the same language). For example, if www.mywebsite.com is accessed from the US, it would show text (in English) appealing to North Americans, but, if accessed from Japan, it would show text (also in English) that appeals more to Japanese people. In the Middle East, we would like the website to show different images than those shown in the US and Asia. Our main concern is that we would like to keep the same URL. How will Google index these pages? Will it index the www.mywebsite.com (Japan version) in its Asia archives and the www.mywebsite.com (US version) in its North American archives? Will Google penalise us for showing different content across Geo-locations on the same URL? What if a URL is meant to show content only in Japan? Are there any other issues that we should be looking out for? Kindest Regards L.B.

URL Structure for Multilingual Site With Two Major Locations
We're working on a hotel site that has two major locations. Locations currently live in separate domains. The sites target users from around the world and offer content in multiple languages. The client is looking into migrating all content into one domain and creating sub-folders for each location. The sites are strong in organic search, but they want to expand the keyword portfolio to broader keywords regarding activities, which they also market on their sites. The goal is to scale their domain authority as they have a really strong brand. The question is which would be a preferred URL structure in case content is finally migrated into one domain? - (we have doubts about were the lang folder should be placed as each location has different amenities and services). Here is what we had in mind: domain.com – this is the homepage domain.com/location-1 – to target English visitors domain.com/location-2 – to target English visitors domain.com/es/location-1 – to target Spanish visitors domain.com/es/location-2 – to target Spanish visitors
