No Appearance in Local pack - group practice favored
-
Hi,
One client has a website, Google My Business etc of his own. He ranks ok to good locally for search terms.
However, his entry simply won't show up within the local n-pack (where it objectively should) and also does not appear in the map. It seems to me that instead a group practice with a colleague that has both their names in its name/title. (Moreover, it is in the same spot - they decided to go with different websites and entries of their own, though.) For some reason, this practice is also connected to the ranking website of our client.
I suppose (NAP problems and previously used phone tracking numbers aside) that this group practice essentially blocks the real client-entry from appearing. Has anybody made such experiences?
(My provisional ToDo would look like: Disconnect the group practice from the client's website; erase/merge it if possible; do proper LocalSEO otherwise.)
Regards
Nico

Hey Nico,
Hate to say it, but this sounds like a serious mess. If there are multiple websites sharing partial or complete NAP and phone numbers being held hostage by third parties, I think:
-
You need a formal audit from a heavy-hitting Local SEO agency to find all of the problems.
-
Even with that, unless you have the authority and green light to launch a massive cleanup, involving all doctors and the practice, your hands may be tied here.
This is one of those really difficult situations one sometimes wades into without realizing the depth of the pool. What you are describing sounds like a very large project, but a good agency can tackle large projects methodically, one step at a time. What is the real concern here is the mention of legal problems and phone numbers being held hostage. There's not going to be a simple solution for this, and it may be that the company needs to work out its internal matters before any SEO team can help them

Hi,
Thanks for your valuable advice! I fear, due to factors outside my influence, it is a little more complicated.
- AFAIK the group practice still exists ... at least technically.
- It does have a website with a (very) good and fitting domain name that is slightly more than a placeholder.
- Its G+ Page is basically empty.
- There is a Facebook Page for the group practice.
- There is legal dispute(!) about the ownership of the domain and in connection with the group practice. Unfortunately, this limits my actions quite strongly.
- Both their practices are still part of the same Clinic. (Before, they shared a practice at a different location.) The clinic is not important for me.
- The telephone number listed with the group practice goes to the other doctor. I assume that this is a major point of trouble - as above, I probably have currently no way to influence this.
- So: Is there anything I can do if telephone numbers ARE wrong but lead to somebody who has no interest in surrendering those phone numbers or having the entries changed?
- (a former duplicate GMB entry for the client has already been resolved)
- sameAs: thanks for the reminder! I indeed forgot this tiny bit when doing the complete schema.org suite on the website (to good effect, btw.)
- Both doctors have different domains now ... and the one group practice domain; the GMB entry is connected to the Website of Doctor A, though.
So again, thanks for your hints!

Hi Nico,
In addition to the good advice from Phillip, I recommend looking carefully at the following:
-
No shared phone numbers.
-
A unique page on the website for each doctor, to which each GMB listing links. Main practice can link to homepage.
-
Try not to share categories between the listings. Give the practice the most important category and find others for the individual practitioners.
-
-
I just went through something very recently that was similar, my doctor left a practice and started his own. His name continued to rank at the old practice (even when the only trace of his name left was in a title tag).
We did a few things:
- Complete separation of GMB pages. The pages were very specific for the location and the doctor. We then tied these to specific location pages instead of homepage.
- Checked all citations / NAP out in the web and updated them to the respective doctor's locations. We had a similar issue, number/ names etc., were not consistent.
- Used SameAs Schema on their contact page to the GMB page (https://schema.org/sameAs) along with the usual Schema for their location / profession.
End result is that depending on the search location and slight variance of the terms, they will both rank in the 3 pack / map.
Our biggest hurdle was one of their GMB pages was deleted and showed them as permanently closed. This caused a lot of issues for mobile users looking for phone numbers and directions.

Unique Local Citation Descriptions?
Hello! As SEO’s we have always understood that it’s best practice to craft a number of unique descriptions when submitting to local directories, rather than using one generic description across all directories. However, if we look at this logically; An average business owner (even if Google didn't exist) wouldn't bother to vary descriptions. They would have a generic brand template and simply submit the same description to each directory. What do you think? Is having unique descriptions a MUST for Local Business Citations, or is it ok to use one generic one? I look forward to hearing your thoughts, Lee.

Did anybody else notice a big change in local/map results in late Jan early Feb
Hi, We work on quite a few local campaigns for clients and saw a fair bit of movement in the UK in late January/early February. Did anybody else notice this? Some of ours have improved, some have lost out, but the results generally seem to have shifted against usual guidelines for listing optimisation (reviews, local phone numbers, consistency with website etc.). Any thoughts? Thanks

What's the 20/80 rule in local SEO as it relates to health care organizations
Hello all, I'm in charge of local SEO for a health care system that covers the entire state of Nebraska, with dozens of clinics all over the state, but mainly Omaha and Lincoln. I'm trying to build a cohesive local strategy for our organization, and a big part of that is figuring out what are the 20% of the actions I could take that will get me 80% of the benefit. Based on your experience as a local SEO specialist or ideally someone who does local SEO in a health care setting, what are the key things I should focus on? I'm not new to local SEO (just new to health care). My guess would be to focus in on getting a good local page on our website for every clinic/location etc., and getting a good Google Page listing for each one as well. But I figured I'd seek out advice on this before I plunge ahead.

Local Profile Struggling
Hi guys, we have a client that we are having some issues with. We have done extensive directory work for them, so this is unusual. Their Google My Business profile isn't ranking hardly at all, although they have decent organic rankings. Here is the company: https://plus.google.com/+ComfortAireHeatingCoolingPlumbingWisconsinRapids/about We have two possible reasons, but before we spend the time fixing these we were hoping for some reassurance from the Moz community. 1)Name in GMB looks spammy. This truly is their name, but we thought it may be an issue due to the keywords. 2)Address inconsistency: The client wanted us to use 880 Highway 73 South, Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494 so that is how we submitted it to aggregators and directory sites. Google didn't accept that, they changed it to: 880 WI-73 Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494. The USPS Zip code checker didn't accept either of these, they use 880 STATE HIGHWAY 73 S, WISCONSIN RAPIDS WI 54494. Do you guys think one of these is our issue, or could it be something else. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Google Local Listing Ranking/Traffic Metrics in the Google Search Console?
A client of mine asked me if it was possible to see local listing data (ranking/traffic stats) in the Google Search Console for a URL. I figured the Google Search Console only shows organic metrics not 3-pack/local listing performance. However I could be mistaken. Does the Google Search Console report this?

Google keeps updating/tweaking my Local business branch addresses ? to whats different in my citations and on page. how can I stop it?
Hi All, I have a number of branches as we have separate branch pages and separate google local listings for these. I have been trying to keep them in consistent for citation purposes but google keeps trying to tweak the address in the local listings. Sometimes for example , google is trying to remove the premises number from the Road e.g 78 Doncaster Road is the actual branch address but google local business wants it as Doncaster Road, I also see Google is wanting to sometimes remove the locality name etc?.. Also If the local listing has a county ( in America - you would have State) , google is sometimes wanting to remove this add United Kingdom in Country instead ?. Is this a problem and how to deal with it as I think this is obviously impacting my local rankings?. If i approve all these changes then do I need update all my citations and page addresses all the time ? Or can I just leave the suggested "Update" or overwrite googles suggestion with what I had originally. Does anyone else have this problem ? thanks pete

How To Rank Individual Pages Locally?
Hello, A fellow business owner recommend that I signup for Moz to ask questions about local SEO. I just have a few questions, but please excuse my ignorance since SEO isn't something I'm very familiar with. My company has locations in 3 different cities in the state of Arkansas. I've noticed that when I type in certain keywords on Google such as "web design", I see a lot of organic listings from web design companies in my local area - but if I were to search from another city, different listings show up that are related to that city. I have 3 different pages on my company's website for each of our locations that gives a little bit of information about them - such as the general manager, storefront photos, and the employee of the month. What can I do to get each of the pages to rank higher on Google in their respective cities? I've heard a lot of different things mentioned such as having the name, address, and phone number listed. Including Google Maps on the page with our location. And some other stuff such as including stuff such as a "KML file" and a "schema markup". If anyone can give me a list of definitive suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
