Duplicate Content & Tags
-
I've recently added tags to my blog posts so that related blog posts are suggested to visitors.
My understanding was that my robot.txt was handling duplicate content so thought it wouldn't be an issue but after Moz crawled by site this week is reported 56 issues of duplicate content in my blog.
I'm using Shopify, so I can edit the robot.txt file but is my understanding correct that if there are 2 or more tags then they will be ignored? I've searched the Shopify documents and forum and can't find a straight answer. My understanding of SEO is fairly limited.

If the only option is to disallow via the robots.txt, then I would agree with your setup - disallow the slugs specific to the tags you don't want indexed. I've heard shopify is a little rough to work with sometimes because of the limitations, so whatever you can do I think is better than nothing. Remember that the robots exclusion is treated as a suggestion and not a command, so if it's possible to assign a no-index meta tag to those URL types that would be best case.
Looks like you're on the right track with the post below:
{ % if handle contains "tagged" % }
{ % endif % }
The one suggestion I would make is that you use noindex,follow so the content will still be crawled, but the duplicate tag won't get indexed. That would create multiple paths to the content on your site, but not create an index bloat issue with multiple tags.

Yoast is a WordPress plugin, not Shopify so that option isn't available with the current CMS. Just wanted to chime in to make sure others aren't looking for Yoast SEO in the Shopify app store.

I'm using Meta Tagger as the SEO plugin, I've not heard of Yoast SEO but will certainly check it out.
I understand that I need to exclude the tags from being crawled and think I might have worked it out but I'm not 100% sure, as I mentioned my understanding is fairly limited.
My URL which is being seen as duplicate content looks like this
http://www.tangled-yarn.co.uk/blogs/news/tagged/sock-knitting
If I exclude the handle 'tagged' from being index this should work. I think the code should be
{ % if handle contains "tagged" % }
{ % endif % }
Do you think this will work?

Do you use Yoast SEO, or another plugin? The key is to set tags to no index so that the crawler only goes through your category links. The issue is that your tag URLs are being indexed and you don't want that. The option is under XML site map.

References for Healthcare Blog Content?
Hey everyone, We have a couple B2C medical/healthcare clients we produce content for and I was wondering what the industry stance is when it comes to giving references at the end of a blog, assuming there were no statistics or direct quotes used in the content. A lot of our content is written via research on a specific condition/treatment and doesn't really dive deep into specific medical nuances. Things like risks, recovery timelines, questions to ask, etc. are written about mostly. Still, should we be providing general references at the end of blogs to sites like WebMD, Medscape, etc. Thanks for any input!

Duplicate Content In Webmaster Tools
In wordpress on some of our blogs when we have gone to publish them wordpress has shortened the url. In Google webmaster tools the orignal url is coming up as a 404 error. This url is not indexed in Google. Is this something to worry about and can this be avoided? Thank you in advance.

How much duplicate content counts as duplicate content to Google?
Hi everyone! I've had a look through some duplicate content posts and I can't see the answer to this query, so I thought I'd ask in case someone could help. I've been looking at a website that competes with the site that I work on. They have profile pages containing content that has been copied and pasted straight from the suppliers' websites. Their pages have all their own code framing the content, which is diluting the concentration of duplicate copy. How much duplicate content can a page have before it gets penalised or ignored by Google? Any suggestions very gratefully received 🐵

Page Content?
So I have review pages for websites on my site, each website has a review around 400-500 words. Recently I had my writers write 2 additional articles on each site but about something they have there. My thinking was interlinking them allowing them to rank individually etc. However now after looking around etc.. I see that content that is upwards of 1000 words or more might be more powerful and the way this is all written etc.. I could easily put it all on one page.... So my question is do I go with 3 pages or 1 page. I can see strength in both

Duplicate content across multiple e-commerce sites
Hi, This may have been discussed here before though I couldn't find a definitive answer, but I was wondering what the best practice for having multiple e-commerce sites with some of the same products on both is. If Site A has 200 products, and Site B has 300 products, and 50 overlap, do they absolutely have to have unique product descriptions? The descriptions have already been rewritten to be different from the manufacturer's description, but do they need to be changed again? Or should the 50 products only be listed on one site or the other? Sites like csnstores.com seem to have the same descriptions as the subsidiary sites that they have, but maybe they have different sidebars/footers/etc which make the content considered original?

For a consumer facing blog, how often do you recommend updating content to develop good rankings? I understand that it's really dependent upon the niche/competition, but what are some best practices? Content is expensive. Thanks

Duplicate Content - Video
I recently noticed a drop in rankings for my site shortly after the new algorithm update. I'm not sure exactly why rankings went down, but would like to know if it has to do with having videos on our site that do not belong to us. We have a few videos on product pages that the manufacturer of the product had created. I was wondering if Google maybe thinks we are maliciously stealing these videos or something and penalizing us for it. And if stuff like this has anything to do with the recent algorithm update. We make our own videos, but some of our manufacturer's videos are just better... and they work with us and are glad for us to have their videos listed. Thanks in advance
