How long should I keep the 301 redirect file
-
We've setup an new site and many pages don't exist anymore (clean up done). But for many of them we have new pages with new url's. We've monitored the 404 and have now many URL's redirected with 301 (apache file).
How long should we keep this in place? Checking all links manually to see of new url is in place of the old url (in google) is too much work.
tx!

Unless there's a reason to take the 301s down, don't.
If you don't want to have to wade through them all when you're editing your .htaccess file you could monitor your server logs which should show all requests & responses your server receives & sends. When no requests for a URL, (and therefor no 301 responses happen), come in for some long period of time, (a month? 6 months? a year?), then you may be able to safely remove the 301 directive from your .htacess, (or wherever you configure your 301s).

This is also bad idea.
.htaccess have parameter with enable or disable subdirectory .htaccess override - AllowOverride. And this can kill all Apache performance! Why?
Let you browse /index.html Apache will parse .htaccess, execute rules and return /index.html. This is normal case scenario - with one .htaccess. But if you browse /subdir1/subdir2/subdir3/subdir4/subdir5/blah.jpg this is BAD! Apache will parse /.htaccess then /subdir1/.htaccess then /subdir1/subdir2/.htaccess .... subdir1/subdir2/subdir3/subdir4/subdir5/.htaccess and then blah.jpg.
Remember! Apache doesn't cache .htaccess. They're loading, parsing and executing on each resource loaded. And when you access 2nd resource - they make this over and over.
It's much better if you make static configuration in httpd.conf because this configuration is loading on startup only and there you can define <site><directory><resource>for each of them.</resource></directory></site>
Other modern webservers also used static config - nginx, lighttpd, etc.

Not possible here, since the structure changed for 100%

Im with you EGOL.
Keep the redirect files as deep as possible. And no, there's no limit on the quantity of 301's
-
Some people place all of their 301 in the root .htaccess folder. I think that is a bad idea.
Mine are in subfolders, as deep within them as possible. I believe that reduces work on the server.

My 301s will still be up when I attend my own funeral.
I am old enough that the web will still exist, but for you maybe not.
I need to add an item to my business succession plan about 301s. Thanks for the reminder.

Can one have to many 301's? Can list be too long?

Hi KBC,
there I dont see that the follow up on the URL update on SERPs should be a problem. Have you tried using 'site:yoursite.com' query?
About the 301 redirect, I wuold keep it as many time as possible. There will be no harm at all when all URL are updated.
Hope this helps you.

Should I do a redirect
Hello, I am building a new website with a new web address for subpages. The domain name stays the same. I am wondering if I should do redirect to the few pages that have an outside link going to them. I noticed all my subpage that don't have any external link have an authority of 18. I only have 1 subpage that has 2 external links and 1 of them has a spam score of 32 and then other one of 1. My website is about a 100 pages. What should I do for my subpages redirect , not redirect, redirect only the ones that have external links ? Thank you,

301 Redirecting from domain to subdomain
We're taking on a redesign of our corporate site on our main domain. We also have a number of well established, product based subdomains. There are a number of content pages that currently live on the corporate site that rank well, and bring in a great deal of traffic, though we are considering placing 301 redirects in place to point that traffic to the appropriate pages on the subdomains. If redirected correctly, can we expect the SEO value of the content pages currently living on the corporate site to transfer to the subdomains, or will we be negatively impacting our SEO by transferring this content from one domain to multiple subdomains?

301 redirect with DNS?
Quick question. Is it possible to 301 redirect a non-www to www. (properly in terms of SEO) with DNS (C Name, A name, or other) ..have searched around and found conflicting information. Would like to know a definite answer. I usually implement all 301 redirects with htaccess. However have a client situation where we only have access to the CMS, but which does have DNS settings. thanks in advance, Greg

301 Redirect from unused domain
Hi All First question here so go easy.. I have a property site which is working well so far considering it;s early days, unfortunately some of my earlier efforts did not go so well and one in particular I pretty much destroyed in my attempts to improve the site SEO. Lucky enough my SEO skills have improved quite a bit lately, largely thanks to the great tools, tutorials and experts here at Moz 🙂 My question is whether I can use a 301 redirect to pass the domain authority and any link equity from an unused site to the one that ive done a better job on? it would seem a little sketchy to me and I would prefer not to get slapped and penalized "again" for doing something dodgy... Thanks everyone and thanks for all the help over the last 6 months or so.. Wes Dunn

Multiple 301 redirects for a HTTPS URL. Good or bad?
I'm working on an ecommerce website that has a few snags and issues with it's coding. They're using https, and when you access the website through domain.com, theres a 301 redirect to http://www.domain.com and then this, in turn, redirected to https://www.domain.com. Would this have a deterimental effect or is that considered the best way to do it. Have the website redirect to http and then all http access is redirected to the https URL? Thanks

301 Redirection and apostrophes in URLs
Hi I am experiencing trouble getting any redirects with apostrophes in the URLs to 301 redirect in order to eliminate 404 errors. I have tried replacing the instance of the apostrophe in the source URL field to %27 and variations of this but to no avail. The site is a wordpress site (the old URLS are legacies from the old Business Catalyst site) and I am using the redirection plug in. I have gone into some detail with a helpful soul here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-deal-with-apostrophes-in-source-url but unfortunately to no result. If anyone has any idea how to solve this puzzle I would be grateful for the help. 301 - do i change old links once 301 is in place?
Hey all, I'm about to setup a 301 on a website that has pretty good SEO rankings and I have the ability to change all the old inbound links that point to the old site, to the new site - should I leave them pointing to the old site that has the 301 on it or change all the old inbound links to the new domain name? Which has better SEO value? Thanks for helping, Anthony
