Add a Search box (content hub) for my website?
-
Hello
We would like to introduce a search area in our website, to help our users to find all information regarding a specific topic (landing pages, infographics, blogs, videos, etc...).
Before we decide to build everything internally, we were wondering if there is any widget or plugging to make this in a smooth way and that works fine.
I have also seen that Google offers a custom search option to make this happens.
I would really appreciate advice about what to do regarding this topic:
Is there any company that offers a really good solution for this? Is worth to use Google custom search option? Or the best option is build it internally?
PS: I have seen that there are many plugins for wordpress, but our site is not a wordpress blog. Just to clarify.
Many thanks for your help

I haven't paid for Google Custom Search engines in the past, but depending on your traffic, your search units may be far less than expected. We see plenty of large sites (thousands of pages+, millions of visits) that see less than 0.1% of their pageviews from searches. If you're starting the search feature from scratch, I wouldn't assume from the start that you're going to need to pay the $2000 rate.
Scoop.it is a bit more like Pinterest or Delicious. You can post stuff to your Scoop.it account, but it's probably not going to be a good solution for searching a website.

Hi Kane
Thanks for you answer
Is what I think; I dont think that we will find nothing better than Google; but of course the free version is a bit limited and the extended one is around 2 grand a year.
By the way, you heard about Scoop.it? They do widgets for wordpress but also offers solutions for html sites.
Thanks

Google custom search will definitely be the easiest way to do this. If your content was stored in a database then there would be more options you could use to search it, but I'd still expect users to get better results from Google's option since it will be smarter at basic search functionality.

No problem Niall.
I hope you get everything sorted soon

Hi Andy
We are based in Munich, but we have our own developers team.
But at the moment they are working in other projects and we were looking for an alternative solution.
Thanks anyway

Hi Niall,
I don't know of any companies who would specialise in this, but pretty much any developer could undertake it for you. I am also sure that you would need the paid version.
Where are you based? I'll see if there is anyone I know.

Hi Andy
Thanks for your answer.
The website is html, no wordpress, wix or cms like these ones.
Actually if we implement it, we would do it for our 23 european sites. Each site is different but one of the big ones could have around 3.000 pages.
If we go for Google custom search, we would choose the paid version as for sure it has more option to customize.
Just wondering if there is any tool/company offering a solution for this; if not we would develop it internally but the project will need more time to go live.
Thanks

Hi Niall,
we were wondering if there is any widget or plugging to make this in a smooth way and that works fine
What is it powering the site then? Drupal? Joomla? Or is it just good old HTML?
If you are looking for a way that works, then there is no reason not to use Google - after all, they are the search masters. This would be a fairly quick and easy way to get a search function working with no cost other than a bit of time, if you go for the free version that is. However, if you are looking for something more custom, then you would really need to talk to a developer who can do this for you.
How big is the site?

Be brutily honest - What do you think of this old content?
My website reports on news relating to certain web hosting providers, and being hit by the latest phantom update a little I am looking back a little more harshly on some of my content with especially the older articles needing alot of work (I know some areas on the site need work), and there are some articles I am just not sure about. I have listed a few OLD articles below https://www.besthostnews.com/the-power-of-shared-web-hosting-by-bluehost/ https://www.besthostnews.com/siteground-sponsors-wordcamp-london/ https://www.besthostnews.com/free-ebook-guide-to-starting-a-website-on-a-budget-a-small-orange/ These are 3 old articles that I have previously updated several months ago, but are they good enough. Â Due to the nature of the site sometimes I will report on certain news \ features that a web host releases, and sometimes there is very little to write about. Â These are probably a good example where I feel there is a struggle to write enough or the quality is perhaps lower than something that has more information to report on. I would appreciate some harsh critical view points \ and perhaps suggestions on how to improve my writing style for these kind of generic style posts.

Great content/news articles - but struggling to drive traffic from them
We publish 2-3 great quality news stories/posts on our sites weekly, but are struggling to gain traffic from external sources for them, other than our own blog and socials. We have followings for each of our sites, but want to expand and get our posts found in other relevant blogs, features, releases etc. The posts are 'Top 10 Tips...', 'How To... in 6 Easy Steps', 'What Makes a Great...' etc. All great things that people want to read about and share. All this of course helps towards the SEO of the sites, but the posts aren't written for that, they are written to guide and inform. My question is, how are other people getting their great content found online, talked about and shared? I personally think that our posts are awesome; containing useful information that will help people. Isn't that what it's all about?

Is it possible to aggregate news content?
Currently all of our content is produced internally, but I would like to expirement with aggregating 50% of our content from external publishers. The content wouldn't be full articles, but instead the excepts with a link back to the source. Is there a way to aggregate content without being penalized? We are using wordpress.

Tools to Eval Blog Content - Rate your Fav tool
Ok, so I know that is has been covered in depth and at the risk of being sent to “google it!” (Which I have done with no success) I thought that I would ask your opinions on the topic. What are the best content marketing evaluation tools? By this I am specifically referring to tools that evaluate the content of Blogs, etc and not the performance of the blog, etc. I’m eager to hear your thoughts of what works and if you care to share what tools did not. Thanks

Best way to avoid duplicate content issues here.
I am planning to write an article that refutes some claims made in another article. The original article is a 20 page pdf. What I plan to do is to take quotes from this PDF and then under each quote write my arguments for or against the quote. If I take direct quotes from the article, is Google likely to see this as duplicate content?
