Any problem with launching a redesigned site early without a few product categories?
-
Hello,
My client wants to launch a redesign early, problem is they want to do this without a majority of their product pages, since the bulk of their sales aren't from these missing categories, will the resulting 404s hurt them?
What is up, is the major pages structured around their primary keyword, most of their sales isn't from the product pages, but from the quotes turned into sales. Big ticket items aren't sold through the cart, they are call or email for quotes and normally those quotes are turned into sales once they realize the price is better.
We will be adding these missing categories and products, just one section at a time. Since 404s don't hurt, and we don't rank very well from the products missing, should I be concerned about any thing else?
Thank you

Sounds like you've got a solid plan! Good luck, and make sure to let your boss and coworkers know that you will almost definitely see a temporary decrease in organic traffic through this process. It doesn't mean that you've ruined it, just that Google needs to adjust.
Good luck!

Thank you!
I've gone through a 301 the urls we were doing good SEO wise with, however I would rather let the ones that panda seemed to not like get 404d and let them start a new with the revised urls as we bring them online at a later date.
This site had most of the SEO mojo going to the homepage since before I got my hands on the site, they didn't monitor backlinks well nor keyword usage and focused on the homepage as the SEO hub. Not knowing to tamper keywords accordingly throughout the site, keeping relative keywords only on the pages they best fit on.
The site ranked so poorly for the urls we're removing, as well the products weren't very profitable it at all. So keeping what worked best on the site was our focus while removing what wasn't helpful to the user or us.
Thank you again for the advice and I've certainly utilized what both of you have mentioned for what we really want to keep. And will be allowing the urls we're not happy with any longer to 404.

I'd recommend somehow keeping the current pages and continuing to link to them, or quickly creating crappy new versions of the pages on your site, just as placeholders. They can even have the proper H1, but the rest can be "coming soon."
In general, if you want to remove content, 404s are fine, it's only a problem if you want to bring that content back later; it'll essentially be new content if you 404ed, and you'll lose all of that good SEO mojo you'd build for that content over time.
If you're reducing the site down by that many pages but don't want to lose rankings, here's what I'd do:
- Identify all pages with a significant amount of organic traffic and/or inbound links.
- 301 redirect each of those pages to a page on your new site with similar content.
This can be pretty time consuming, but it'll save you a lot of organic traffic!
Good luck,
Kristina

Thank you,
So what's the best course of action to take, if I want to keep these categories off the new site but will be adding them later on? How is it recommended to handle the resulting 404s?
I'm sure this happens in other sites, either a discontinuation of a product category, and a consolidation of products in general, or even site's hit by panda, how do they keep the content not seen and not affect them with the 404s if they do remove?
I thought about nofollow noindex but these products they want off completely for now.
We're going from about 664 pages to 130 pages internally.
We'll be removing 531 urls when we launch this new site in a week. All 531 pages are products that we will be working on their descriptions and overall SEO in general, but are not ready to go live with them.

404s do hurt both user experience and ranking potential. As far as rankings go, it will hurt you site-wide too since it's an indication of your site's quality.
Releasing it without some products isn't the end of the world. The 404s will be a problem though - I would not recommend launching a website with any 404s, much less a collection of them.
If the links to these pages are just in the nav, it should be easy enough to comment those out temporarily so you don't see those 404s. What you end up with then is just a website that sells fewer products really.

Why is Google not indexing my site?
I'm a bit confused as to why my site just isn't indexing on Google. Even if I type in my brand name, my social channels rank and there's no evidence of my website. I've followed all of the advice I've read and gone into webmaster tools and got the Wordpress yoast plug-in but nothing seems to be making a difference! One thing I've noticed, in Google Webmaster Tools it says "Couldn’t communicate with the DNS server." in site errors. I've called GoDaddy and they said that everything is fine. A bit frustrating. Trying to work out what my next steps should be but feeling a bit lost to be honest! Any help GREATLY appreciated!

Staging site and "live" site have both been indexed by Google
While creating a site we forgot to password protect the staging site while it was being built. Now that the site has been moved to the new domain, it has come to my attention that both the staging site (site.staging.com) and the "live" site (site.com) are both being indexed. What is the best way to solve this problem? I was thinking about adding a 301 redirect from the staging site to the live site via HTACCESS. Any recommendations?

Is it a problem to have an image + link in your menu
Hi, My menu has a image with links to some of the main pages on the site and text underneath it explaining what the banner is. Will it be beneficial or harmful to have the text hyperlinked to the same pages the images go to?

One site per location or all under and umbrella site?
I am working on a project where we are re-branding lots (100+) existing local business under one national brand. I am wondering what we should do with their existing websites, they are generally fairly poor and will need re-designing to match the new brand but may have some residual links? 301 redirect the URL to the national site, e.g. nationalsite.com/localbusinessA? If so what should I look out for? Do I need to specifically redirect any pages that have links to them to the same pages on the new site? Or should I give them a new standalone website that they link back to the national brand site? More than likely this will be hosted on the same server and CMS as the main site just the URL will remain Do I need to make sure that any old URL's that had links to them are 301'd to the new pages? Many thanks for you advice.

Want to Target Mobile site for Google Mobile Version and Desktop Site for Google Desktop Version
I have ecommerce site with both mobile version and desktop version. Mobile version starts with m.example.com and full version starts with www.example.com I am using same content through out both site and using 301 redirection by detecting user agent vice-versa. My both sites are accessible to crawl by any google spider. I have submitted both sites's sitemap to GWT and mobile site having mobile sitemap xml, so google can easily recognize my mobile site. Is it going to help to rank my both sites as per my expectation? I need to rank for mobile site in Google mobile and ranking for desktop site in Google desktop version. Some of pages of my mobile site are started to appearing in Google desktop version. So how I can stop them to appear in Google desktop? Your comments are highly welcome.

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?

Product category paging
Hi, My product categories have 2-3 pages each. I have paging implemented with rel=next and rel=prev. from some reason Google GWT now reports the pages as having duplicate titles and description. Should I be worried? Should I set a different title like "blue category - page x" ? Thanx, Asaf

Hi my site www.in2town.co.uk which is a lifestyle magazine has gone under a major refit. I am still working on it but it should be ready by the end of this week or sooner but one problem i have is, google is not visiting the site. But now it seems google is not visiting the site. for example i am using sh404sef and i have put friendly url in the site and on the home page it has its name and meta tag but when you look at google it is not giving the site a name. Also it has not visited the site since october 13th Can anyone advise how to encourage google to visit the site please.
