Why does our main keyword keep dropping?
-
Hey Guys,
We've seen an alarming drop in our main keyword for our website. Our biggest driver of traffic has always been the search term 'gifts for men' which we commanded the top spot for a while, but have always been in the top 4 for.
Recently (in the last 3-4 months) we dropped to 6 and as of last night we dropped down to 9th.
We still rank number 2 for 'gift ideas for men'. Both search terms point to this page: GIfts For Men
Nothing onsite or technically has changed, and there is consistently new content in the form of products being added almost daily.
We hit a manual action back in October of last year and I'm concerned that the toxic links (that we didn't create mind you) we disavowed may have been unnaturally boosting this page and now we're dropping significantly because they're gone.
Any ideas on how we can curb this concerning trend?
Thanks a lot

Hi,
I'm trying to read over your content and it just keeps loading more products. Very frustrating. You should consider pagination and having a default amount of products load on the page.
Regarding your internal links, you have one the says "2000 gifts for men" and one that says "shop gifts for men". These links point to the page the exist on, with a hashed URL. Links should never point to the same URL on which they live, I see this a lot and its very frustrating, it looks spammy to search engines, and is confusing/frustrating/irritating for searchers. They click that link only to be taken to the top of this long page again? Not a good user experience. There's also a link for your homepage buried in "..." in the first paragraph, that also looks spammy/cloaky to me.
I'm not saying these page load and internal linking issues are your whole problem, but they're definitely not helping your situation and the simplest things like this should be tackled first.
There are no external links pointing to this page, if your competitors have similar pages with some recently acquired good quality external links to them, this is potentially the cause of your recent decline.

Do you know that the read more tag on that page actually displays less and read less actually displays more?
When I put that page through Pingdom Melbourne I get a 5.09 second load time and 1.6 MB page size. That's a bit long and you get a 45/100 (red) score on Google Developer's Tool for mobile and a 70/100 on desktop: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yellowoctopus.com.au%2Funique-gifts%2Fgifts-for-men
The site at #1 gets a 79/100 mobile and 92/100 desktop and is only 209 kb and loads in 2.37 seconds on Pingdom: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/bol6kH/http://www.giftsforblokes.com.au/
You have what looks to me like some link spam going on. There are 30 domains that link to you on just one IP address and another 20 from a second IP. That's 50 domains across just two IP addresses. The odds of that being natural are astronomical and very, very unlikely. https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/referring/v2/ips/subdomains/fresh/all/1/refdomains_desc?target=yellowoctopus.com.au
You also have a staggering number of links from .org, .net, .uk, .ru, .de, .info and so on. This is also a high indicator of link manipulation. The site at #1 doesn't have this issue at all.
The vast, vast majority of your backlinks come from images and the anchor text is your brand, not anything to do with men. 45% of your links over time have been deleted, also a very bad quality sign: https://majestic.com/reports/site-explorer?folder=&q=yellowoctopus.com.au
The site I see at #1 is roundly kicking your site's tail at every corner. The site I see at #2 loads a slightly larger page than you but does it in much less time: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/dW9TDy/hardtofind.com.au Most of the sites above you also have a better (clean) backlink profile. Hardtofind has over 23,000 links showing up in Majestic, which is huge. Only about 15% of their links are images where yours is closer to 80%. Only 20% of their links are nofollow while 50% of yours are.
Your page is the only one in the top 6 that uses meta keywords and you use them a little bit "old school" - they can generally only be a negative ranking factor and it seems they aren't helping you.
The content across all 4 pages is quite the same so it shouldn't matter that much.
I would say your slightly spammier link profile, slightly slower load times and slightly fewer dofollow, good links are pushing you down. Their stuff is, frankly, better at the moment. And I see DJs and Kmart above you - bad luck about that but if they want your category you're going to have to spin miracles to beat them.
I would check Search Console for a penalty notification although this is most likely an algorithmic adjustment. Those links aren't counting for you. If someone did a disavow on them they may have also gone "too far" with it. It's hard to say. I would check search console settings, including claiming all versions of the site and make sure the HTTPS and www version are your preferred versions.
Then I would try to draw non-image links to the page, maybe add some new content above or below products, work on your link profile overall and push the domain as a whole as well.

Unexplainable drop in traffic
Hello Mozzers, I am new at Moz and certainly hope you can help me!

I used to consider myself very knowledgeable in SEO since I had hundreds or maybe thousands of keywords very well ranked on Google Guatemala (www.google.com.gt) for more than a decade. That was until a year ago: November 8th, 2019... On that date, all of my rankings plummeted, never to return. At first I thought it was just a hickup from the Google Algorithm, but as days turned into weeks I became very worried, so I started doing a bunch of things: Reworked the pages (except home page) to make them responsive (I used to have two versions of each page, one for desktop and one for mobile). Removed the ads from the pages to make them faster, thinking it could be due to the speed (even if my competitors sites were slower!) Fixed thousands of 404s Disavowed thousands of bad domains and spammy URLs (I never bought a single link but there were thousands of links from forums, theglobe network, etc) Removed more than 12,000 members from my own forum who had never posted anything: about 4000 of them just had created a profile to include a link to different extenral sites. Fixed a few other technical aspects... Nothing helped. In fact, my rankings have kept going down. My content is good and unique, my site has good DA but still I get outranked and buried by several sites which don't have as much information as I have. There are NO manual actions against my site according to Search Console. As I mentioned before, I have never bought any backlinks, so all of my links should be natural (although there were thousands of links to my forum from spammy sites which I disavowed). So, I am frustrated as I really don't know what the problem is. I am giving you 3 examples of Keywords and URLs of pages that were number one for years, and now are not even on first page, so that you can see them and tell me your thoughts about what may be happening: KEYWORD: VOLCANES DE GUATEMALA
URL: https://www.deguate.com/geografia/volcanes/Los-volcanes-de-Guatemala.shtml Note: was #1, now is on 5th page. Removed all the ads to see if it would help. KEYWORD: MINISTERIOS DE GUATEMALA URL: https://www.deguate.com/artman/publish/politica_ministerios/Los-ministerios-de-Guatemala.shtml Note: was #1, now is on 2nd page. Removed all the ads to see if it would help. KEYWORD: LEYENDAS DE GUATEMALA URL: https://www.deguate.com/artman/publish/misterios-leyendas/las-leyendas-mas-famosas-en-guatemala.shtml Note: Was #1, now is on 3rd page. It's stuffed with ads, as it doesn't seem to matter wheter my pages have ads or not, and since I lost my rankings on thousands of pages at least I can probably generate a little more income like that. Thank you so much for the help you can provide!0 -
Should we go after this main keyword?
Hello, We run an online store. The main content keyword for our niche is very competitive, but if I was going to go look up information and I was one of our customers, that is exactly what I would type in - this main general keyword. We have an expert in the field to write it and plenty of time. Although the main keyword is competitive, there are many many subkeywords that are a lot less competitive that would be answered in the article. It's tough to find good topics in this niche. We're thinking about doing a "Complete Guide to X". We would have far less backlinks and authority for about half of the 30 keywords it will cover than our main competitors. Should we do this and spend the next couple of years working on it, or should we perhaps target a smaller topic? Any advice is appreciated.

Keyword Rankings: One keyword dropped, dragging other rankings down. Possible or not?
Hey moz fans, So these week I noticed significant drop in rankings... But what caught my attention is that one specific keyword dropped 18 positions, and all the other just 1-3. Print screen: http://prntscr.com/7fb4g4 Do you think it's possible that the drop of that page, that went 18 positions down, brought the whole domain down? Or is it another cause?

Title Length Vs Keywords
Hello all, I've been talking with an SEO expert who convinced me to add more keywords to my titles of a section of our site which is updated with products daily. I can see the logic and I do prefer having these additional keywords. The problem now is in Moz it says we have over 2,000 pages with title elements that are too long, which is true they are all over the 70 character limit. Is this a problem SEO wise? Speaking to our SEO expert they said it's not ideal from a user point of view as you can't see the full title, but are we going to be upsetting Google by having 150+ character titles? Thanks!

Correct strategy for long-tail keywords?
Hi, We are selling log houses on our website. Every log house is listed as a "product", and this "product" consists of many separate parts, that are technically also products. For example a log house product consists of doors, windows, roof - and all these parts are technically also products, having their own content pages. The question is - Should we let google index these detail pages, or should we list them as noindex? These pages have no content, only the headline, which are great for long-tail SEO. We are probably the only manufacturer in the world who has a separate page for "log house wood beam 400x400mm". But otherwise these pages are empty. My question is - what should we do? Should we let google index them all (we have over 3600 of them) and maybe try to insert an automatic FAQ section to every one of them to put more content on the page? Or will 3600 low-content pages hurt our rankings? Otherwise we are ranking quite well. Thanks, Johan

Why are Pages returning 404 errors not being dropped?
Our webmaster tools continues to return anywhere upwards of 750 pages that have 404 errors. These are from pages of a previous site no longer used. However this was over 1 year ago these pages were dropped along with the 301 re-directs. Why is Google not clearing these from webmaster tools but re-listing them again after 3 month cycle? Is it because external sites have links to these pages? If so should I put a 301 in place (most of these site are forums and potentially dodgy directories etc from previous poor link building programs) or ask for a manual removal?

Shortening Keywords in a title tag
in my title tag i want to have: 3D Renders of Office Refurbishment & Interior Design Kent | Complete Group which unfortunatly is longer than 70 characters, however, to make it fit in 70 characters i could put: 3D Renders of Office Refurb & Interior Design Kent | Complete Group Notice that refurbishment has been changed to refurb, would this be ok for SEO purposes?
