Using Canonicals on category or link pages
-
Hey,
If a site has category or tag pages showing in search results for a particular keyword - sometimes higher than the page you would like to rank - could using canonical redirects on categories and tags be a solution?
Thanks
-
Agreed.
Out of curiosity, Eric, what's your opinion of then placing "noindex, follow" on the tag-or-category pages? I've seen cases in which the pages themselves are close enough to look like duplicate content.

Sites that allow both category and tags pages to get indexed will definitely run into duplicate content issues. We recommend choosing one--either tags or categories. We prefer to use a select number of categories, and make sure that each category has at least two or most posts associated with each category.
Rather than use the canonical tag, it's much more effective if you just remove all of the tags on the site (if you're only using categories). That will completely remove all the duplicate content on the site.

Hi,
This is a problem related to site's architecture i.e you need to expose only those pages to bots that you want to and while doing this, make sure you're not ending up with keyword cannibalization wherein you have more than one pages targeting a single keyword like in this situation.
So, its always better to take this call in the start whether you want to expose tag pages to bots or not? They might be serving exactly same content as your category pages for some keywords. As a result, you might end up with duplicate content and keyword cannibalization situations.
Short answer to your question, yes canonical should be fine here if the content is almost the same and targeting the same keyword. I would recommend you to not do this for individual pages, rather find a pattern and do it for all to avoid the same problem again.
Hope this helps!

Apple.com showing in Google Analytics "My Top Active Pages" - Why?
Hi Mozzers This has more than likely been asked before but my searches have left me empty handed so I have asked on here ( sorry! ) Please see attached screenshot, do you have any idea why apple.com is showing in my top pages? I'm just curious more than anything as this isn't the first time I've noticed it. Anybody know? Happy Friday people, cheers Jamie CiTCA5b.png

Deleted Rarely Visited Pages - Traffic Dropped (Big Time)
Hi folks: I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have on a problem I am having with organic traffic. One of our sites has about 500 pages/blog posts. We had about 200 pages that no one was visiting, or only one to ten people had visited in an entire year. As a result, we decided to experiment, and delete any page which had fewer than 5 visits in a year. This resulted in a deletion of about 90 pages. We did this on April 6 or 7 of this year. Two days later, we had a substantial drop in visits to the site. We had been getting about 300 sessions a day. Now, we are lucky to get that in a month. I know there was an algorithm update in late March, but our traffic dropped about two weeks after that, and a day or so after the deletion of the pages. There is a clear demarcation on analytics. I gave it a month, the traffic did not recover, so we decided to restore the pages. Traffic has not recovered and it has been about 3 months now. Does anyone have any thoughts on why we might have experienced such a drastic drop as well as what we might do to recover from it? Thanks very much

Webmaster Tools, why does it show 486 pages submitted to web, and only 40 indexed?
I am confused on what a client account shows in WMTs, client account is http://multiview.com. They have a graph showing 486 pages submitted to web, but only 40 are indexed. Also, they recently re-launched, i.e in April 2014, and the new site has about 40 pages indexed.... so I am guessing that the 486 number relates to all the pages that are showing errors in retrieving...i.e. 28 soft 404 errors, 10 access denied errors, 808 not found errors. Does this make sense to explain why there is such a gap between 486 and 40?

Do I need to rectify it?

Should I delete a page that gets search traffic, that I don't care about?
I have a page on my site that consistently gets traffic, every month. Googlers seems to love it. But I don't like it at all. Webmaster tools shows that google allows us a certain number of search impressions each day. - it flatlines, they are limiting the impressions we get. We also getthe same number of clickthroughs each day. So my question is for anyone who has this same experience, who may have experimented by deleting a page you don't care about. Did you just lose that number of clicks each day or did other pages on your site get displayed and clicked through instead?
