How do you analyze a traffic drop with no historic Google Analytics data?
-
A client of mine has a large website with multiple sections (shop, forums, articles, etc.) that apparently had a significant reduction in rankings, traffic, and sales in the past. However, historic Google Analytics data is not available for the site, and I'm having troubles identifying anything concrete about the traffic drop, such as when it happened, what pages/sections it happened to, etc. The shop traffic drives most of the revenue, but it's a small number compared to the forums traffic, so it's hard to pick anything out of top-line trends like SEMrush offers.
What tools or strategies might help in this situation?
-
Thank you for the input, everyone. In case anyone else has a similar problem, the tool I ended up finding most useful is SpyFu's ranking history tool. We were able to establish what the client couldn't remember – the dates this site did and did not rank for his main keywords.

Hi Adam,
My first question is - how does the client know that they had a drop in rankings/traffic? Where are they getting that information, to give to you? Are they inferring it from having had a loss in sales, or do they know some other way? If they are basing it solely on a drop in sales, it could be that the site has a conversion problem, rather than a traffic/rankings problem.
SEMRush is the tool I would use to identify where they had losses in rankings - have you used their historical data option to see what keywords the site used to rank for, that it doesn't anymore? Even if you don't know the exact date that things went wrong, if the client can give you a date that is definitely before the loss, that should help you compare. The next thing I would check is Search Console and Majestic/Open Site Explorer - are they, or have they been, under any kind of penalty? Is there a pattern of shady backlinks in their link profile?
I would also check for new competitors in the market. Who ranks for their target terms now, and did they rank for them before this change in traffic?
I know this isn't a great answer to your specific question, but if this drop in traffic/rankings happened a while ago (like a year+), I would try to get the client to focus less on "what happened" and more on "what can we do now." Even if you did figure out what happened, if it was long enough ago, putting things back how they were before might not help at all. Instead, I would approach the site as if it were any other SEO project - where are their weaknesses, what could they be doing better, etc. It may not satisfy their need to know what went wrong, but it will get them results.

Several tools. Suggest you try semrush and similarweb. Different sets of data but it will give you an idea. Not close to GA but likely put you on the right track.
Hope that assists.

Was Google Analytics and Adsense Down Today?
For the last 4 hours of so we were registering zero users and Adsense reporting has not changed. We checked the site, and there were no problems. It seems for some reason there was no reporting. Just now it came back up and we are showing live traffic. Trying to figure out if this was a problem specific to us or if it is on Google's end. Thanks,

Funnel Problem in Google Analytics - Please help
Hello, I did set up a several funnel steps in my analytics account to get the funnel visualization report. But it's look fishy, something's clearly wrong that it shows only 10 visitors at the first step but actually more than 5k visitors has visited first goal page and followed through the another all steps. Everyday we are receiving 5k to 10k goal conversions but it not showing in the entire funnel steps through first step to last step. Please see the attached screenshot URL for funnel setup (Admin) and funnel visualization report comparing last two months traffic. Total goal conversions received 3,605 in last two months but in funnel chart (report) it showing only 2% conversions in last step. Anybody can tell me what is the problem with that or analytics not tracking properly?si65Y

Drop in direct traffic
Hi, I help look after two websites and have been tracking traffic sources for a couple of years. I have noticed that both sites have seen a drop in direct traffic over 2 years. Has anyone else noticed this and do you have a hypothesis as to the reason? Overall, on both sites traffic has increased. Thanks, Amelia

Analytics not tracking traffic from Old Domain Redirect
We've recently 301 redirected one of our client's domains to their new website and the strange thing is, we aren't seeing an increase in traffic in analytics. You would expect the traffic to increase roughly by the traffic volume from the old domain. There were a few hundred redirects and we tested a large sample and the redirects have been implemented properly. Is there something that we did incorrectly in our implementation of the domain redirect? Or is there something else that we need to do in Analytics to properly track those redirects?

Google Analytics - Not provided info
Morning all, i am using Google analytics for some time now, One of the issues that i don't have a clear answer for is, when i am looking at Traffic Source --> overview In the Keyword column, that is a line (not provided) What we think here is that we cant see the keywords if someone arrived to our website but was logged-in to Google account Is this correct? is there a way to find the keywords behind this (not provided)? - i have many visits for this line (17.3% of all visits) and i don't know which keywords people used. Thank you SeoWise

Google Maps not passing referral data
Google Maps is not passing referral data (URLs, not KWs). Google+ Local is referring, but nothing from maps. Maps referrals appear to be coming across as direct. Any ideas? We haven't found anything online, one of the guys at the office documented what we did find, using Chrome's debugger - http://manofactionmetrics.com/2012/11/02/google-maps-not-passing-any-referral-data/

Using Regex for Goals in Google Analytics
I’ve got a website with 20 different forms; and I’d like to track all 20 form completions with one Goal in Google Analytics. The completion-page URLs follow the pattern below (the website uses Drupal CMS) Form One: www.acme.com/node/2990/done?sid=651 Form Two: www.acme.com /node/2991/done?sid=785 Form Three: www.acme.com /node/2992/done?sid=1021 Form Four: www.acme.com /node/2993/done?sid=459 I believe that there is a way I can use regex so Google Analytics will track if any of these completion URLs appears. Looking for guidance how to format the regex statement.

How to change a url for google analytics account
We recently changed the url of a client's website. Is there a way to change the url on the ga account instead of creating a new account so that we don't lose comparative data? Thanks! Sorry- I know this is a novice question.
