Is this a good sitemap hierarchy for a big eCommerce site (50k+ pages).
-
Hi guys, hope you're all good.
I am currently in the process of designing a new sitemap hierarchy to ensure that every page on the site gets indexed and is accessible via Google. It's important that our sitemap file is well structured, divided and organised into relevant sub-categories to improve indexing.
I just wanted to make sure that it's all good before forwarding onto the development team for them to consider. At the moment the site has everything thrown into /sitemap.xml/ and it exceeds the 50k limit. Here is what I have came up with:
A primary sitemap.xml referencing other sitemap files, each of the following areas will have their own sitemap of which is referenced by /sitemap.xml/. As an example, sitemap.xml will contain 6 links, all of which link to other sitemaps.
- Product pages;
- Blog posts;
- Categories and sub categories;
- Forum posts, pages etc;
- TV specific pages (we have a TV show);
- Other pages.
Is this format correct? Once it has been implemented I can then go ahead and submit all 6 separate sitemaps to webmaster tools + add a sitemap link to the footer of the site.
All comments are greatly appreciated - if you know of a site which has a good sitemap architecture, please send the link my way!

Have a read of what Google say about them here.
And yes, image search is huge. As for the way it's used, I can't comment on what everyone else does.

Interesting, I haven't ever came across someone who said that I should put image URL's in a sitemap. Do users really search via Google images though - if they do aren't they just looking to copy an image / and or download it?
I can't see the site generating qualified leads through image based searches.

Duplicate content is when two or more URLs show the same content.
I referred to the fact that sometime categories, tags or subcategories show the same content. By the latter, i mean the same posts.Just to clarify, imagine that you have a category: Dogs and the subcategory: Puppies. And the last 5 articles/posts have both, category and subcategory.
When visiting the main page fo both(cat and subcat) will show the same content, the same 5 posts/articlesDid I make myself clear?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Gaston, I appreciate it.
You mentioned duplicate content - what do you mean? If the page has already been indexed, Google will skip/re-crawl the page. Not too sure what you mean by that?

Hi Brett,
Don't forget to add an images sitemap, as Google is pretty hot on those, and make sure you do some good image marketing as well.
But what you suggest is absolutely fine. From the main Sitemap, Google will find all of the others as well.
Just as a note, do make sure you know which pages need more crawling through using the last modified date. This will help them know which pages they should be recrawling more often.

Hi brett,
Yeap, the hierarchy is ok. You should keep in mind to only submit to index the pages that are of yout interest and dont generate duplicate content, just a reminder.
Then, just submit every sitemap to search console.
Hope it helps.
GR.

Redirecting an Entire Site to a Page on Another Site?
So I have a site that I want to shut down http://vowrenewalsmaui.com and redirect to a dedicated Vow Renewals page I am making on this site here: https://simplemauiwedding.net. My main question is: I don't want to lose all the authority of the pages and if I just redirect the site using my domain registrar's 301 redirect it will only redirect the main URL not all of the supporting pages, to my knowledge. How do I not lose all the authority of the supporting pages and still shut down the site and close down my site builder? I know if I leave the site up I can redirect all of the individual pages to corresponding pages on the other site, but I want to be done with it. Just trying to figure out if there is a better way than I know of. The domain is hosted through GoDaddy.

Ecommerce category pages & improving rankings
Hi Moz 🙂 I work on an ecommerce site & am getting stuck with how to improve rankings on category pages. I have a competitor who writes loads of content for their category pages under tabs & they perform very well. The content isn't particularly helpful, more about their range and what they offer. I have tested adding similar content under a tab to some of our category pages - with some performing well & others not as well. I know this isn't ideal, and I'd like some help with an alternative. Does anyone have tips on improving rankings on category pages? I don't have much control on the layout, this is controlled by our parent company which restricts us. I am researching writing user guides, but these will be on other pages not directly on the category page & the way we have to add them is a lot of manual work for our webmaster, so I can't get them up as quickly as I'd like. I have seen REI have a small bit of content at the top of their pages that link to guides e.g - https://www.rei.com/c/static-and-rescue-ropes But obviously their domain authority is so high already, that they don't need as much help as me 🙂 At the moment I have some new Chair pages I need to rank, these are competitive and any ideas would be great 🙂 Here are some examples: http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/ergonomic-office-chairs http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/executive-office-chairs Thank you!

Duplicate ecommerce sites, SEO implications & others?
We have an established eCom site built out with custom php, dedicated SERPs, traffic, etc.. The question has arisen on how to extend commerce on social and we have found a solution with Shopify. In order to take advantage of this, we'd need to build out a completely new site in Shopify and would have to have the site live in order to have storefronts on Pinterest and Twitter. Aside from the obvious problem with having two databases, merchant processing, etc, does anyone know whether there are SEO implications to having two live sites with duplicate products? Could we just disavow a Shopify store in Webmaster Tools? Any other thoughts or suggestions? TIA!

Looking for a good example of local pages done right
I am looking for a company or two that serves customers in multiple regions and has their site set up in the best possible way to target those areas. I would like, if possible, to see an example of a company that has an address in each area served, and one that only has one base location, but travels to serve customers.

Amount of pages indexed for classified (number of pages for the same query)
I've notice that classified usually has a lots of pages indexed and that's because for each query/kw they index the first 100 results pages, normally they have 10 results per page. As an example imagine the site www.classified.com, for the query/kw "house for rent new york" there is the page www.classified.com/houses/house-for-rent-new-york and the "index" is set for the first 100 SERP pages, so www.classified.com/houses/house-for-rent-new-york www.classified.com/houses/house-for-rent-new-york-1 www.classified.com/houses/house-for-rent-new-york-2 ...and so on. Wouldn't it better to index only the 1st result page? I mean in the first 100 pages lots of ads are very similar so why should Google be happy by indexing lots of similar pages? Could Google penalyze this behaviour? What's your suggestions? Many tahnks in advance for your help.
