Have we been penalised?
-
I have run a site called getinspired365.com for the last few years. All it does is dish out a new inspiring video everyday. Recently we decided to implement an SEO strategy around the creation of quote pages. We have created 200,000 different quote pages (e.g. http://www.getinspired365.com/brave-men-rejoice-in-adversity-just-as-brave-soldiers-triumph-in-war). As well as this, we've created 15,000 author pages (e.g.http://www.getinspired365.com/george-washington-quotes). We initially did a small batch to see if we could rank for different terms such as the start of a particular quote or "person's name quotes" and fortunately we ranked pretty well - on the first page for a lot of quotes, and authors.
What we then did was release all of these new pages over the next week or two - so 215,000 pages. They've all indexed fine and we've received no errors on Webmaster Tools. We've not done any blackhat stuff and our domain is pretty solid having been featured by Techcrunch, BBC and others. On MOZ our individual pages are getting an "A" grade for SEO. We did this activity around 10 weeks ago.
However, almost all of these pages are not ranking anywhere in Google. We accept that they may not rank on page 1 but they're not even ranking in the top 20 pages despite our small batch ranking really well. Some brand new pages, weirdly, are ranking (e.g.http://www.getinspired365.com/andrea-bocelli-quotes ranks on page 2 and http://www.getinspired365.com/walter-sisulu-quotes ranks page 1). We've seen no real rise in search impressions within Webmaster tools - so it is as though there's a penalty on our site, but not on all of our site - and not on just the new pages.
I just wondered if anyone had any idea what could be causing the issue? Is it simply that we have released too much content too quickly? And if so, would you recommend de-indexing everything and almost starting again by just doing very small batches over a long period of time.
Really appreciate any advice you may be able to offer.
thanks,
Steve -
Hey Steven, it's hard for giving you a 100% valid answer as we do not know your site as well as you do, but here I will try clarify your doubts with my PoV:
1. beware of the definition of original content. Google is starting to move away from the solely written by me = original = deemed to rank. They are trying to figure out which content is unique and also adds value to user experience. You need to try to provide content which is providing a meaningful addition to user experience.
2. care with internal duplication. the walt disney piece on the right looks like a boilerplate content which is present on more the 51 pages on your website (google search). Take into account that if you create an original piece and then you splash it across multiple pages of your website google may dilute its value
3. Panda is a page-level algorithm. Panda doesn't act on the site as a whole. Even before being integrated with Core algorithm it was clear that panda acted on a page-level basis, only after reaching a certain threshold the system may decide to rule out a site from google rankings. It's definitely likely that google may be discounting only the pages it feels that are not useful while keeping the ones that are adding a value. The cancer quotes list is a good list of quotes that may be not found elsewhere. You know better than we do which unique functionalities you ahve added to your website to assess which are pages that deserves to rank vs pages which are just a rework on already existing (onsite) pages.
I hope this helps you!

Great thanks guys.
So a page like this - http://www.getinspired365.com/the-more-you-like-yourself-the-less-you-are-like-anyone-else-which-makes-you-unique - I guess is a bit better as it has some original written copy down the left hand side (around 200 words). So it sounds like you're suggesting I need to do more stuff like this to pad out the pages and to make them better quality.
One question I had - why would Google not just penalise all the pages? So if you are right (and I am not disputing that you are) why are some pages, with nothing on them bar a quote and the person's name ranking but some others not ranking. I'd have thought the whole lot would not rank? Also, some pages that have more in the way of original content (http://www.getinspired365.com/the-more-you-like-yourself-the-less-you-are-like-anyone-else-which-makes-you-unique) are not ranking vs some that have no original content but yet are ranking.

Perfect, thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
So a page like this - http://www.getinspired365.com/cancer-quotes - has a "uniqueness" about it as I have written the copy down the left hand side (around 200 words). So it sounds like you're suggesting I need to do more stuff like this to pad out the pages and to make them better quality.
For some pages we have created our own bio's (for people) and "did you knows" that are all written by us - but again some are ranking, some are not. And some which haven't got either feature and literally just contain the person's name and their quotes are ranking. Having said that, we'll add more original content to these pages and see what difference that makes. Thanks again.

**I would test this theory by picking a few of the random pages and adding some content that is well optimized and see how it performs. **
Great suggestion, Brian.
Put some real work into a few of these pages and see what happens.

Yeah have to agree sounds like 'doorway' pages that are there to generate search traffic which Google doesn't like.
You either need more content on these pages, getting UGC would be one way of adding more relevant content to the pages
-
Cool site.
I agree, with Egols comment, I think Google is treating these pages as being low quality because there isn't much content on the pages. If you're familiar with worpdress, Google often does the same thing with all the hundreds of pages that WP makes for blog categories, tags, etc.
I would test this theory by picking a few of the random pages and adding some content that is well optimized and see how it performs.

My bet is that Google sees these as low quality pages because there is not much text content beyond a quote and that same quote can be found on lots of other websites. Google is looking to promote pages that have unique and substantive content that does not already exist on hundreds to thousands of other websites.
Although other websites are in the SERPs with simply a quote and some supplemental content, they claimed that turf first, are now well established sites. Newcomers who enter these SERPs without unique and substantive content are going to be placed in the supplemental results or filtered from the SERPs.
Turf in the SERPs has become really hard to get. You will have to do more for these pages to be successful.

Links from a penalised site.
Hey Mozzers, Recently we have had a series of agencies in to pitch for work, one group mentioned that due to our association with a possibly penalised product review website, any links and activity associated with the brand would hinder our SEO. We currently have a good rating, but we are now no longer pushing our customers to the site as we move to a new platform. The current link back from this website is also no-followed. Any thoughts on how this could impact us? And how the agencies determined the site was penalised and causing us problems. Cheers Tim

Google Change of Address for previously penalised website?
Hey guys Would you use the 'change of address' tool (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106?hl=en) for a site that was previously penalised, pointing it to the new URL? Cheers Jeremy

What happens if one remove the disavow file from a non penalised site
What happens if one remove the disavow file from a site that has not received a manual penalty from Google. Although the site did suffer from a drop in traffic and rankings.

Website penalised can't find where the problem is. Google went INSANE
Hello, I desperately need a hand here! Firstly I just want to say that I we never infracted google guidelines as far as we know. I have been around in this field for about 6 years and have had success with many websites on the way relying only in natural SEO and was never penalised until now. The problem is that our website www.turbosconto.it is and we have no idea why. (not manual) The web has been online for more than 6 months and it NEVER started to rank. it has about 2 organic visits a day at max. In this time we got several links from good websites which are related to our topic which actually keep sending us about 50 visits a day. Nevertheless our organic visita are still 1 or 2 a day. All the pages seem to be heavily penalised ... when you perform a search for any of our "shops"even including our Url, no entries for the domain appear. A search example: http://www.turbosconto.it zalando What I will expect to find as a result: http://www.turbosconto.it/buono-sconto-zalando The same case repeats for all of the pages for the "shops" we promote. Searching any of the brads + our domain shows no result except from "nike" and "euroclinix" (I see no relationship between these 2) Some days before for these same type of searches it was showing pages from the domain which we blocked by robots months ago, and which go to 404 error instead of our optimised landing pages which cannot be found in the first 50 results. These pages are generated by our rating system... We already send requests to de index all theses pages but they keep appearing for every new page that we create. And the real pages nowhere to be found... Here isan example: http://www.turbosconto.it/shops/codice-promozionale-pimkie/rat

You can see how google indexes that for as in this search: site:www.turbosconto.it rate Why on earth will google show a page which is blocked by the robots.txt displaying that the content cannot retrieved because it is blocked by the robots instead of showing pages which are totally SEO Friendly and content rich... All the script from TurboSconto is the same one that we use in our spanish version www.turbocupones.com. With this last one we have awesome results, so it makes things even more weird... Ok apart from those weird issues with the indexation and the robots, why did a research on out backlinks and we where surprised to fin a few bad links that we never asked for. Never the less there are just a few and we have many HIGH QUALITY LINKS, which makes it hard to believe that this could be the reason. Just to be sure we, we used the disavow tool for these links, here are the bad links we submitted 2 days ago: domain: www.drilldown.it #we did not ask for this domain: www.indicizza.net #we did not ask for this domain: urlbook.in #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://inpe.br.way2seo.org/domain-list-878 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://shady.nu.gomarathi.com/domain-list-789 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://www.clicdopoclic.it/2013/12/i-migliori-siti-italiani-di-coupon-e.html #we did not ask for this, moreover and is a copy of a post of an other blog http://typo.domain.bi/turbosconto.it I have no clue what can it be, we have no warning messages in the webmaster tools or anything.
For me it looks as if google has a BUG and went crazy on judging our italian website. Or perhaps we are just missing something ??? If anyone could throw some light on this I will be really glad and willing to pay some compensation for the help provided. THANKS A LOT!0 -
Suggestions for a cost effective, SEO safe domain that was previously penalised
Hi, I will try to explain my situation as clearly as I can, and any positive advise would be greatly appreciated. Obviously please let me know if you have any questions but I'm sorry the domains are private. I started by business 4 years ago and launched a website (site A) and worked hard to promote it in the best way I knew how. It brought in a good income for around 3 years but then was hit with some sort of google penalty/filter! Knowing then what I know now would probably of avoided the problem altogether but that's another story... So I brought another domain (site B) and started again with a new design and completely re-branded the company, and again have been working hard to promote it. It has been preforming well and there has been steady progress 😉 However since then I have been steadily promoting the penalised site (site A) and keeping an eye on it to see if the penalty/filter may be lifted. It had initially lost around 75% of traffic, but recently has been doing much better in SERPS and is again on the increase. My problem is that with my company now being completely re branded I want to keep consistency but (site A) looks old and dated compared the new one (site B) and I don’t want to be confusing users etc... So I need a cost efficient and “safe” solution to this in terms of SEO and budget. 301 Redirect to site B I thought of a 301 redirect “BUT” I'm concerned about the penalty/filter being passed onto the new site (site B) and have read this dose happen ? Complete Redesign/brand for site A This would probably be the best option except I'm limited on funds. I would need “another” full commerce site as its just way to much money at the moment. Remove site A completely Funds are tight and I'm still feeling the affects of the penalty so really can't afford to loose any traffic at all! Use site A as a micro-site I thought a micro site with just the main product landing pages being used. I would use the same design as site B, then re-write the text and then link everything to the new site. “BUT” I'm concerned about getting another penalty (duplicate) as all the anchor text links going to site B site would be identical! EG. To use the same design as site B I would need to use the same layout etc including navbars, anchor text links in the footer etc.. and I'm worried this may trigger a duplicate content penalty ? I hope there are some suggestion for my situation and thanks in advance for your help. Thanks Chris.

How can I penalise my own site in an international search?
Perhaps penalise isn't the right word, but we have two ecommerce sites. One at .com and one at .com.au. For the com.au site we would like only that site to appear for our brand name search in google.com.au. For the .com site we would like only that site to appear for our brand name search in google.com. I've targeted each site in the respective country in Google Webmaster Tools and published the Australian and English address on the respective site. What I'm concerned about is people on Google.com.au searching our brand and clicking through to the .com site. Is there anything I can do to lower the ranking of my .com site in Google.com.au?

Penalised for duplicate content, time to fix?
Ok, I accept this one is my fault but wondering on time scales to fix... I have a website and I put an affiliate store on it, using merchant datafeeds in a bid to get revenue from the site. This was all good, however, I forgot to put noindex on the datafeed/duplicate content pages and over a period of a couple of weeks the traffic to the site died. I have since nofollowed or removed the products but some 3 months later my site still will not rank for the keywords it was ranking for previously. It will not even rank if I type in the sites' name (bright tights). I have searched for the name using bright tights, "bright tights" and brighttights but none of them return the site anywhere. I am guessing that I have been hit with a drop x place penalty by Google for the duplicate content. What is the easiest way around this? I have no warning about bad links or the such. Is it worth battling on trying to get the domain back or should I write off the domain, buy a new one and start again but minus the duplicate content? The goal of having the duplicate content store on the site was to be able to rank the category pages in the store which had unique content on so there were no problems with that which I could foresee. Like Amazon et al, the categories would have lists of products (amongst other content) and you would click through to the individual product description - the duplicate page. Thanks for reading

How to tell if you have been penalised?
Hey Guys, Something is seriously going on with the SEO on my website and it's become business critical. We were ranked first on Google for phrases like 'Advertising agency Cambridge' and all of a sudden we have been dropped, not even ranking. To me this screams a penalisation but I can't understand why. I have never paid for links or done anything out of the ordinary that would get such a negative impact. Is there a way to check if a site has actually been penalised and find the reason? What would be the best course of action to appeal? Has anyone experienced something like this and have a timeframe for resolution? Thanks, Gareth
