Competitor Inbound Links Increase from 175K to 1 million in 1 month, how?
-
Hi all,
I was recently doing some competitive analysis on external links/DA and came across something peculiar. A competitor of ours had their external links go from 175,179 in August to 1,141,365 in September. I've attached a screenshot showing the increase. The competitors domain authority also increased from 82 to 89 in the same time span. Has anyone else come across such a large link increase in such a short period of time, while also being rewarded for it? Obviously at first glance it seemed extremely black hat and unnatural, but I would love to be proven wrong.
Thanks!

This can be pretty easy to do:
-
they could do few 301 redirect from domains with many inbound links
-
they could place sitewide footer links on websites with many pages indexed
I don't believe it's a blackhat in 100% but I'm 100% it's not good in long term. Also DA increased so links come from high DA domains too. However high DA doesn't guarantee links are good for seo and always safe.

Hi,
Well, what happened with: innocent until proven guilty ;). Because what could have happened here:
- Open Site Explorer found more links in their niche/industry so they just found more links in there area.
- They have started a partnership with a site that is linking to them from hundreds of thousands of pages. Have been there done that and then usually this happens. It's Links, not referring root domains what we're looking at in the end.
Some ideas to identify if this is really the more black hat kind of stuff, identify patterns:
- Look at their changes in follow/nofollow links so you get some sense if there links are bought or not.
- Look at what kind of anchor texts they're using. If the majority of links is still with their brand name anchor text then they might have done link buying or whatever crappy tactic but at least not focused on a certain keyword. If they're dumb they did it for specific keywords they want to rank for.
- Look at other competitors in their industry, do they see a similar trend.
- Have they done any other outreach/PR stunts in the past that suddenly got them tons of new links?
All of this might give you a better sense into if this is shitty black hat or that it's a valid tactic.

Hi Matt,
They are certainly using some black techniques to get backlinks otherwise it is not possible to get such number of backlinks. Google sometime miss but Google will penalize that website when they caught. After penguin 4.0 I assume they will caught soon.
If you want you can report Google about this by filling this form @ https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/paidlinks?pli=1
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Can you disavow a spamy link that is not pointing to your website?
We have submitted several really spammy websites to the Google spam team. We noticed they take a very long time to react to submissions. Do you know if it is possible to disavow a link that is not pointing to your website but rather to a very spammy website? Thanks

Spammy Links (from .ru) pointing to my domain! How to deal with it?
Hi all, We run an e-commerce store - I am just looking at the apache logs and I am finding a lot of spammy links that have been referrers to our pages - when I check the links, I cannot find our URL in an HREF on their page so I presume they may be using some country based cloaking? These are the domains that are targeting specific pages on our site:

Link directories question
Looking over a clients site and they have a bunch of link directory links that seem very skeptical to me, but the mozrank and authority seem to be ok on the home page. One directory is addlinkzfree and they have the same template and layout as a few other directories this client has. Link page has no juice whatsover, but home page has PA 54, MR 5.04 and root domain is DA 45. At first glance this would appear to be respectable numbers right? But the title of the directory and multitude of links lead me to think its nothing but a link farm. Should I advise the client to run and try to remove links from these type sites even though home page has decent scores? Im of the mindset that anything diredctory with links, free, partners etc in title need be avoided. Would appreciate any backup on this or am I just being paranoid?

Are links from directories good or bad?
I've done a lot of competitive link analysis lately and found that a lot of my competitors links for a certain keyword are coming from low quality directory sites and they're outranking my site. This leads me to my question which may or may not have an answer(I at least hope it fuels a good discussion)... Are links from directory sites good or bad for SEO?

'Stealing' link juice from 404's
As you all know, it's valuable but hard to get competitors to link to your website. I'm wondering if the following could work: Sometimes I spot that a competitor is linking to a certain external page, but he made a typo in the URL (e.g. the competitor meant to link to awesomeglobes.com/info-page/ but the link says aewsomeglobes.com/info-page/). Could I then register the typo domain and 301 it to my own domain (i.e. aewsomeglobes.com/info-page/ to mydomain.com/info-page/) and collect the link juice? Does it also work if the link is a root domain?

Methods for getting links to my site indexed?
What are the best practices for getting links to my site indexed in search engines. We have been creating content and acquiring backlinks for the last few months. They are not being found in the back link checkers or in the Open Site Explorer. What are the tricks of the trade for imporiving the time and indexing of these links? I have read about some RSS methods using wordpress sites but that seems a little shady and i am sure google is looking for that now. Look forward to your advice.

Does your website get downgraded if you link to a lower quality site?
My site has a pr of 4. My friends site has a pr of 2 but I think that he is doing some black hat seo techniques. I wanted to know whether the search engines would ding me for linking to (i.e., validating) a lower quality site.
