how do i work my keywords i pick up to the #1ranking spot

Charles,
Don't pick your keywords based on what you can rank for, pick your keywords based on what will send qualified visitors to your site. Changing the keywords you target isn't going to fix an incomplete or broken SEO strategy, it's only going to lead to more problems - i.e. not getting qualified traffic.
As Ken mentioned, look at why you aren't ranking for keywords and make adjustments. The crawl report, on-page grader, and page optimization tools here in Moz will help your troubleshoot what's going on with your rankings and identify places you can adjust your tactics.

Hi-
That's a pretty general question and the answer is certainly more complicated than a yes or no. Here are some things to consider.
You need to look at why you aren't you ranking for those keywords? Have the pages been indexed and are they showing up in the serps at all? If not, that's possibly a different problem. If they are showing up and they are competitive keywords it may be that you need to do more work to rank them higher.
As for changing keywords, that may be of little help depending on the answers to the first part. Certainly there are keywords that are easier to rank for, but only if you're doing the right things to get them ranked. The Keyword Explorer tool at Moz (https://moz.com/explorer) is a great place to start if you want to assess different keywords.
Good Luck
Ken

Any advice for a bootstrap retail website trying to grow our backlinks?
Hi there, Our online business https://www.irishcelticjewellery.com is based in Ireland but targets USA and European markets. We have been heavily focused on Adwords as the primary traffic source, and a few months ago attempted to revamp and fine-tune this, which negative results. I believe we moved too fast and changed too many configurations too quickly. Organic traffic has been neglected, and so has stayed flat at approx 10% of traffic, however analytics suggests that the majority of these visitors have less than 30% bounce rate, view more than 6 pages/visit, and have been the source of more than 50% of our sales over a 2 year period. Based on this, I see a huge need to focus on organic now, and I'm wondering if you have any advice on building back-links. I have begun listing the website in as many relevant business directories as I can find, and we recently began pushing the website on social media as much as our budget allows. I'm mainly considering targeting complimentary websites, asking them to link to us in exchange for a 4-5% of each sale originating from their backlinks to us. Is that a realistic approach to building backlinks? and do you think this kind of arrangement will be well-received generally? We're a small operation, with a tight budget. Also, Is social worth pursuing? Thanks in advance, any advice is much appreciated. Alan

SEO expert for site
Hey guys, I am looking for an SEO expert for my website. I have talked to a couple different people, but since I know nothing about it, it is hard for me to get a good read on whether they know what they are talking about or not. The main keywords are in the sports betting industry, which I believe to be a highly competitive space. Any advice, suggestions, or recommendations? Thank you

Affiliate site
I have a client I am doing SEO work for. He sells a system that helps people win at video keno. He sells a system for like $200 that shows people step by step how to play and win. Its a good site and he has a ton of verified winnings. My point in saying that, its not a fly-by-night system he wrote in his basement. I know - gambling, not easy for SEO. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. Wouldn't this potentially be perfect for affiliate marketing? He offers a good commission to whoever sends him traffic if they buy. If anybody could direct me to a resource or two that is reputable and would handle as much of the set up and management of this I would be very grateful! Thank you! Matthew

Will giving a blogger an affiliate url to my site reduce her links' seo value to me?
If a blogger were to write a post about one of my products and link to my product page, would giving her an affiliate url to link to rather than the normal link spoil the seo value of the link? So instead of mysite.com/product-one it would be mysite.com/affiliate/blogger/product-one Google would think... this is a transaction not a vote of confidence?

Duplicate versions of pages on my site are getting indexed by Google...I think...
Hello, Our site has a very high bounce rate, which in part is down to a slightly old fashioned design, and also because we are a retailer and I imagine many visitors are simply quickly comparing prices and then leaving. However, having had a look in Google Analytics, I think that there is another issue that is contributing to a very high bounce rate. When I look in Content > Top Content, and order the pages in order of Bounce Rate, high to low, there are hundreds of instances of pages with just one or two visits in the last month, and a 100% bounce rate. The links are the same as our home page or pages on our website, but with extra letters and numbers at the end of the url. We have an affiliate scheme, which provides our affiliates with unique codes for the products they want to link to, and my guess is that these urls are getting indexed. I've looked at a few other links, and they go to translated versions of a page from our website, generated by Google. Other urls seem to have been generated by search results from our own search on the website. What worries me is that there are lots and lots of versions of the same page, with slightly different urls. I am by no means an SEO expert - I work for a very small company and am basically learning as I go - but I know that duplicate content is bad news. If the pages were on our own site, we could use 301s to redirect, but what about translated versions, or urls generated by affiliate schemes, or search results? Many thanks, Sophy
