Redirected traffic and SEO problem

Hi all,
I have a bit of a search engine predicament and I can't find the answer anywhere. It's a bit of a complicated one so please bear with me ...
I'm a Freelance Copywriter, I recently started the business, I've also recently moved to New Zealand. As such I'm looking for business back in the U.K. (As that's where my network is), but also locally, in NZ.
I've purchased both the .co.uk and .co.nz domain names (http://www.inspirecontent.co.uk and http://www.inspirecontent.co.nz)
The way that the domain provider / host has set these up is for one to redirect to another. Currently if someone visits www.inspirecontent.co.nz it redirects to the U.K. Site.
That's less than ideal for me, because I dont want NZ traffic (i.e potential leads) to think I'm a U.K. Based business.
my questions are as follows:
1. Will the redirect to the U.K. domain prevent me from appearing in NZ search (I.e if someone searches via google.co.nz) I'm really struggling to rank at the moment, I'm working on more content but if the redirect is a problem then I need to know about it so that I can find a work around.
2. Any suggestions on the best approach to the work around? It would be great if the URLs didn't change! So that you wind up from the U.K. on the U.K site, and if you're from NZ, you land on and stay on the NZ domain, but I'm not sure how to achieve that. One option, I think, would be to have two different websites, hosted separately, but I hear that duplicated content is bad for SEO?

To answer your questions:

The redirect you mention will impact your rankings for keywords that are locally based (New Zealand copywriter, for example) or for folks using specific search engines (google.co.uk/google.co.nz) which will identify your website according to relevancy (UK to UK, NZ to NZ). The redirect should probably point from your UK site to your NZ site, since your contacts in the UK can still find your site using google.co.uk, which will redirect them to your NZ site. Meanwhile, your NZ leads will be able to find your NZ site more easily if it is optimized for New Zealand. What that redirect is currently telling Google is that you moved from NZ to the UK, and are carrying forward your domain, which is essentially the opposite of what you have actually done.

There are a few ways to move forward:
a) You create 1 website which optimizes for both NZ and the UK. Create a "locations" page of sorts which optimizes the same keywords for different geographic areas. (i.e. have  a "New Zealand copywriter" page and a "United Kingdom copywriter" page). You can remove the redirect if you like, or keep it. This would be best utilized on whichever page currently has better rankings, although ideally you would use your NZ domain since that is where you are based. Not an ideal answer since keyword relevancy will be lacking for one country or the other depending on your choice of domain.
b) You cancel the redirect and optimize both websites. This is probably your best option but requires twice as much work. Duplicate content is an issue to some degree, but it won't really hurt you. Duplicate content is more of a "you won't gain any benefit from your content, but it won't hurt you" issue. You can use canonical tags to minimize the damage you do to your rankings for each site, or you can create unique content for both sites (this is your best case scenario). It would probably be best to separate your hosting (at least have these 2 sites on different servers) in order to avoid any cross-contamination if/when you conduct linkbuilding for your site.
In an ideal world, you create unique content for both sites. In a pinch, you duplicate your content from the site you plan to use most to the site you plan to use least, providing canonical tags for content on your main website.
There will be a lot of work on your plate when it comes to optimizing both sites, but that is the best way to move forward, in my opinion. I'm sure other Mozzers will have more to say on that.

Multiregional / Multilingual SEO - Subfolders Question
Hello all, I wonder if you can help me... I have a question about subfolders in multi-regional / multi-lingual SEO - more specifically in reference to targeting the UK and the US. Having looked at some global websites these are the types of implementations I've most commonly seen: UK subfolders .com/uk .com/gb .com/gb/en-gb | .com/en-GB .com/gb-en .com/en-gb .com/uk/en US subfolders .com/us .com/us/en-us | .com/en-US .com/us-en .com/en-us .com/us/en Are any of these approaches better than others or is it all a matter of personal preference? What's the reason for using .com/gb over .com/uk (or vice versa) for example? Secondly, my assumption is that the examples above which include language subfolders do so because these companies are targeting different speaking users within these countries. Would I be right to think that since the organisation I work for is only targeting the American speakers in the US, we wouldn't need to go so far as to have language subfolders in addition to location subfolders? GeoIP Redirects & hreflang
Hello, We believe we've had some issues with hreflang tags not remaining validated due to the implementation of geoIP redirects. Previously, if a user clicked a landing page on Google search that was not targeted for their territory, they would instantly be redirected to a sub path that targets their territory using geoIP redirects. We're planning to remove the initial geoIP redirects and have messaging that prompts the user to either stay on the page they've landed on, or be redirected to page that is right for their territory. However, if a user has selected to be redirected to a sub path that is targeted for their territory, they will have a cookie preference set for the IP location they've selected, and will continue to be redirected to their chosen sub path. My question is, will a crawler follow and trigger the geo preference cookie, which could potentially cause complexities in validating hreflang tags and ranking of content for the right market. Duplicate product description ranking problems (off-site duplicate content)
We do business in niche category and not in English language market. We have 2-3 main competitors who use same product information as us. They all do have same duplicate products descriptions as we. We with one competitors have domains with highest authority in this market. They maybe have 10-20% better link profile (when counting linking domains and total links). Problem is that they rank much better with product names then we do (same duplicate product descriptions as we have and almost same level internal optimisation) and they haven't done any extra link building for products. Manufacturers website aren't problem, because these doesn't rank well with product name keywords. Most of our new and some old product go to the Supplemental Results and are shown in "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the ... already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.". Unique text for products isn't a option. When we have writen unique content for product, then these seem to rank way better. So our questions is what can we do externaly to help our duplicate description product rank better compared to our main competitor withour writing unique text? How important is indexation time? Will it give big advantage to get indexed first? We have thought of using more RSS/bing services to get faster indexation (both site will get products information almost at same time). It seems our competitor get quicker in index then we do. Also are farmpages helpful for getting some quick low value links for new products. We have planed to make 2-3 domains that would have few links pointint to these new products to get little advantage right after products are launched and doesn't have extranl links. Sitemap works and our new product are shown on front pages (products that still mostly doesn't rank well and go to Supplemental Results). Some new product have #1 or top3 raking, but these are only maybe 1/3 that should have top3 rankings. Also we have noticed problem that when we index products quickly (for example Fetch as Google) then these will get good top3 results and then some will get out of rankings (to Supplemental Results).

Does the location of my Domain Registrar affect SEO? For example, if my hosting company is in the U.S., but the domain registrar is overseas. Also, is it better to have both services be met by one company?

SEO for different English spiking countries
Hi, I'm trying to target my SEO to several English spiking countries (Canada, UK, Australia, South Africa and so..) and I came across a big dilemma: should I tray to build a local version of my website for each country, or perhaps I should stay with my one .COM website and re-direct all the English-local-countries with 301 (if anyone will tray to go into the local domain)? The thing is that obviously the best practice to get high ranking is to be local, but what should I put in those sites and who can I avoid duplicate content and user confusion?
