To buy or not to buy? Domains with history..

I am involved in setting up a new business which as of yet is to decide on a brand name.. As the availability of domain name in local tld (and ideally .com) is of so much importance, the brand naming process is inextricably linked to this. Therefore, upon finding a suggested name was available to register (without premium) there was a degree of satisfaction. However on looking at archive.org it was discovered that the .co.uk had been a sex/marital aid store back in 2004 and more recently in 2014 a travel blog / affiliate. Q is; Is the past history of what is a site with possible black hat links a reason to avoid registration? Or, does time cure all? And, is there a way in which domain health can be reliably confirmed? Thanks in advance for your input..

Julie thanks for your reply with which I agree mostly. However there may be a opportunity to use good names if the passage of time and removal or dropping of all links has 'sanitized' the url.. question is how to have this confirmed...

I have used old domains as a part of a link campaign, but I think it's too risky for a long term money site. Even if it worked for a little while, you have no idea if and when Google might tweak a bit and your new site suffers for it. I realize how hard it is to give up a name once you're keen, but my opinion is better to be safe than crying in your beer later.

Buying links - where is the line drawn?
I apologise in advance if this has been discussed before, but I'm a bit confused by this whole buying links/outreach scenario. Example.. High ranking PR site (PR 85) has people advertising they can get you links from that site in exchange for money.

You would give them an article and it would look natural and a link - branded or keyword - links back to you. This is not new to people here who know of this. Obviously there is a difference between a link farm (crap site just selling links) and one of these highly recognised sites where you can obtain a link from. I'm sure a goody 2 shoes will now tell me 'i should do everything natural not be tempted', but I actually dont know where the line is drawn between the same site giving a natural link to me and someone selling a link from the same site. Google isnt going to downgrade the site I'm sure but how do they combat this or even do they combat it? Do we have to accept that buying links is still a normal process and if done in moderation and discretely, you can get away with it?1 -
Buying quality domainname with juice
I run the SEO side for our company and the MOZ tools have been quite helpfull to track keywords and bump the rankings of certain pages by filtering the errors and filling missing tags like H1, H3 , meta etc. However, the website is an webshop which sells niche products, this makes getting quality backlinks quite a challenge and besides some forums and directories there is little I think I can do to get more quality backlinks without entering grey hat or even blackhat practices. There is not even blogs related to this niche in relevant language, otherwise we would send them samples of products so they would write about it. Recently ( 6 months ago, in SEO time this is ages I think) one of the competitors went bust and their domain name has become available for purchase. It's domainauthority ranks at 21/100 while our own stands at 20/100. now comes my question: If we would to purchase this domain, and do a 301 redirect, would it pass on the juice to our site? what else can I do to improve the ranking except the usual part like: titletags, H1, metatags, img alt, valuable text etc. what other ways are there to get quality backlinks in nichemarkets, I don't want to buy backlinks as I consider that as a shortterm solution and blackhat, and since 80% of our traffic comes organic from google, last thing I want is a penalty from our lord google

Secondary Domain Outranking Master Website
IEEE is a large professional association dedicated to serving engineers. The IEEE Web Presence is made up of flagship sites like IEEE.org, IEEEXplore, and IEEE Spectrum, mid-tier sites like Computer.org, and smaller sites like those dedicated to specific conferences. It is unclear exactly when this started - but searches in Google for [ieee] currently return ieeeusa.org before ieee.org. This is troublesome, as users are typically looking for IEEE.org with such a general query. ieeeusa.org is a site that has a much narrower focus - it is dedicated to public policy. IEEE.org is one of the strongest domains - I am thinking that this is a glitch of some sort. I am removing a stale sitemap that is referenced in robots.txt (though again, I'm not seeing any issues with other pages - its just two queries that are trouble: [ieee] and [about ieee]. 301 redirect from an unwanted non-affiliated domain
Hey everyone, Our site was hit with an unnatural link penalty a few weeks ago, and it looks very much like a malicious link attack. We've never participated in any link schemes or anything resembling black hat link building. In fact, we've barely even done any link building. Reviewing our backlink profile, there are hundreds of links from just a few (very dodgy) domains that we have no control over, and we've have had no luck when contacting webmasters to get them removed. More importantly, we've seen several domains which 301 redirect straight to our domain. We don't know who they are and they're not contactable. I believe that the redirect means they're passing link value from all of their terrible links to us? How can we get the redirects removed, as at worst they're really harming us, and at best, they're adding no value. Thanks
