When trying to sculpt an internal link structure, is there any point in placing text links to top level pages that are already in the main menu?
-
Does Google recognise a link in the content if there is already a link in the menu? My understanding is that Google only counts the first link it finds.

Thanks for the answer Brett. I guess I was going off old information and maybe confused between page rank and anchor text. Matt Cutts said: "last time he looked, which was in 2009, they only counted the anchor text from the first link." which makes me think I must have heard it quite a while ago. Source: (http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718), although the video is not working for me so I can't double check exactly what he says here.
But anyway, many thanks. Extremely useful information for me

There is value. You are indicating to Google throughout your website with every link you place that you consider Page A or Page B to be more or less valuable than the other to your users.
We know that Google places different values on backlinks based on the the placement of the link. For example a link that is in the main body content will pass along pagerank and so will a link in a footer, but the value is modified as it passes through on the assumption that a link in the footer is of different value than a link placed in content.
I'm not sure where you heard that Google only counts the first link it finds. That's incorrect, and you can read any of the older articles from Matt Cutt's blog on how pagerank works to see why.
I believe the best case for you is to create links that go to content you value highly for your business and your users, and to place these links in logical places.

Hi bittristo! Does this response help to answer your question or are you looking for more information? If you're good to go, please mark this as answered. Thanks!

Nobody knows exactly how google counts and values links in the navigation vs links in the body content.
If I was going to place my bets, google will consider both of them and consider them separately. Links in the navigation define the structure of your website. Links in the body content map connections to related pages of your website.
In a recent recoding of my website, I am reviewing the articles and making sure that I have done a good job of linking to relevant pages in every article. Also, we changed the CSS to make those links have a stronger font to attract reader attention. Giving readers a better opportunity to engage your site and visit multiple pages is an important thing to do.
Why? Google values visitor engagement as much, maybe more than the internal links that appear on your page. I personally think that engagement is more important than either internal links or external links. I am sure that some people disagree, but that is where my work and money is placed.

How would you push up a page that is already ranking in the top 20?
One of our pages is currently ranking around the 11th position in Google. According to MOZ page grader its page optimization score is an A. I've manually checked the on page optimization and it's done properly. Our page speed is in the 20s according to google page speed insight tool and when I look at one of our top competitors their scores are in the 60s. So that may be an issue. Our DA is 70 and our top competitor's DA is 85. However we have more backlinks and social shares for our page. So do you think our page speed may be working against us? What else would you check or consider optimizing? I'm just trying to come up with other possible causes that would be working against us. Thanks.

Is moving text out of the main body field a bad idea for SEO?
Hi, I manage this WordPress website http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk I've been looking for ways to improve the product template and have come up with the following http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-alhambra-fireplace/ - you can see how this compares to the old template http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-burlington-fireplace/ Basically I've moved the description copy for the product from the main body to an alternative field and disabled the reviews tab below the product images to give a more compact feel and better use of the space available in my humble opinion! The client approves too. However I was just about the change all the other products to match this one - but suddenly thought is is wise to move all text out of the main body just to improve the look? I wondered what impact this might have on search. Any pointers would be welcomed. One course of action might be to find a new theme that's just a little more accommodating! Or to develop this theme further to ensure the main body copy is displayed where I want it to be? Regards to the Moz community - thanks for reading. Nathan

Home Page Keywords not Ranking and Assigned to Inside Pages
Hi, thank you for taking the time to read this. We have a few websites with the same problem. I will use http://www.prepared-meals.com as an example: The home page was ranking on page one for keyword "Prepared Meals". The site is about 6 months old. We use the Moz page optimizer on all pages of our websites to score an A rating. Recently we found the home page is no longer showing up in search results and the keyword "prepared meals" now points to an inside page that is not relevant: http://www.prepared-meals.com/Senior-Meals/Moms-Meals-Reviews.html this page shows up for Prepared Meals around page 15 in Google results. We have read keywords in the URL might be the issue, even though the page optimizer in MOZ says to do that. We are wondering if this is the issue or there is some other problem we are not aware of. Again, thank you for you for your time. -Craig

Main Page Gone For Main Keyword
For the past 5-6 months I have consistenly ranked at positions #14-16 for snow guards on snoshield.com. The past 3 days I cannot find the home page anywhere in Google for that keyword. The only thing that has really changed over the past two months is I placed 3 guest blog posts on pretty highly trusted sites that are industry related and created links to the site using suggestions from getlisted. I've read other reports of others seeing similar things happen recently. I don't think this is a penguin thing, because I can still find the site by searching for the company name, I just can't find it when searching the keyword. I did notice that a different page on the site is now ranking in position #21 for this keyword, but this page is optimized for a different keyword phrase. Is it possible that even though the sub page is optimized for a different keyword phrase, I am cannibalizing the site?

Do NoFollow links still split link equity?
So I realize that Google will split link equity between all links on any given page. Example, if a landing page has 10 links then the authority from the landing page is split into 10 and each link given its own smaller amount of equity from that landing page. My question is if I were to turn 9 of the 10 links on this page to NoFollow links would the equity still remain split 10 ways or would it simply pass all of it to the one DoFollow link left on the page?

Framed Pages and Dynamic Pages
Has anyone else had experience with different CMS's for Ecommerce . Ones that create static pages and others that dynamically create pages. What differences have you seen with rankings on google with the two. Here are two examples of sites using static framed pages and one with a system that dynamically creates pages - http://www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/ - static frames and http://www.floraselect.co.uk - dynamically
