Domain authority decrease after open site explorer update. Reasons?
-
Hi!
I just noticed a decrease on our domain authority and also the page authority of several of our pages on the SeoMoz toolbar. For instance, DA went from 34 to 29. I was scared and confused, so I went to check it on the opensite explorer and saw that it had been updated.
I want to ask you guys if the same happened with your metrics or is it just us. Because the strange thing about it is that we have been doing some good optimization work lately and also some linkbuilding, and actually our SERP’s have been improving in general, and some specific ones have been performing great.
Our website is http://www.inmonova.com as a reference.
Can anyone cast some light into this?

Hey guys!
Keri is right - we have done some updating with our crawler and this index represents the newest version - unfortunately with a few hiccups. People seem to be seeing two issues with this new index - link counts and domain authorities are going up or down considerably and there is an increase of "questionable" inbound links.
Both issues are due to the same root cause: our new crawler is built to be fresher, but it is going deeper into domains, and, unfortunately not visiting as many domains. Domains with a high MozRank are getting crawled deeper, but domains with middle to lower MozRanks are not getting crawled.
Our top priority now is to get the domain diversity back up to or better than that of our last update as was originally designed. It's fixable and we will be focusing all efforts on this.
Previous crawling worked by selecting a list of the top MozRank URLs (around 10B) and then crawling one page from each of them. Now we are crawling links as we discover them, and crawling high MozRank sites daily, weekly or monthly. The advantage of the new crawlers is we are crawling all the time and so we will have fresher data. As links are added, we are much more likely to discover these deeper links. The new crawl had 59B urls, a lot more than the previous 42B, however, more of these links are from the same domain.
The reason for the "questionable" links is due to the fact that the crawler is reaching deeper into the domains where there are more download links. We are currently looking into fixing this so these won't be counted as links. We'll let you know as soon as that issue is resolved!
We are really sorry for the inconvenience. Once we have this new crawler dialed it will provide much fresher and higher quality data!!
Thanks,
Carin

Hey! Thanks a lot. I was a bit worried because the timing was just not very lucky for us.
There had been almost no SEO work, at leas no linkbuilding, for 2 years and we only started 2 months ago, so causality was making me wonder if we had been doing something wrong.
Your answers make me feel better. And yes, it's true that competitors have also gone through changes. Some have improved though (grrrrrrr.....).
Looking forward to the engineer's explanations!

Hi! Don't panic! This is part of the OSE algorithm update. The OSE engineers will be over here in the next few days to give some more explanation here, but wanted to let you know now that it isn't your website that had a big change.
-
We noticed the same decrease on three of our websites as well, and some of the competitors we track. One of our websites also went dramatically up (with many new questionable links). I believe this latest update of the link graph had some major changes that altered the domain authorities on a lot of websites. These numbers are all relative to everyone else, so hopefully this isn't an accurate reflection of how our websites are performing.
Good luck! Happy optimizing
Andrew

Update in Domain Authority
Hi Team, I see that the Domain Authority for our web domain (www.se.com) remains unchanged since last 6-7 months.Even though we have been putting in focus on Link building, Cleaning our association with Toxic links, build internal links, and updating internal content. Also i see that the sitiuation remains same for many of the Cometitor websites like ww.siemens.com, www.ge.com, www.rockwellautomation.com with unchanged DA since last several months. Can you please confirm the frequency of DA updates and is there been some issues with the Algorithm. Regards Bhaskaran.

Open Site Explorer produces better results for www.50campfires.com than 50campfires.com
Our website url is 50campfires.com and www.50campfires.com redirects to 50campfires.com Look at the Open Site Explorer results for the two and www.50campfires.com has better results. Does google have an issue with this or may it be confusing them? We have redirects in place. How would I go about fixing this? More on what strategies would improve Page Authority and Page Rank. Thanks in Advance. 79JtBKA.png lrHwsOU.png

Open site explorer, why are my social media metrics incorrect?
In open site explorer the Facebook and twitter stats are very low in correlation to what we think it should be. Twitter - 129 Total tweets and retweets of this URL since March 2010, including tweets of the URL with unique parameters added. We tweet our URL and people retweet our url several times a day, why is this figure so low? Facebook - 268 shares, 133 likes. Our Facebook page has 16,767 likes · 1,373 talking about this. Surely this figure should be higher? Could it be that its not linked to our site properly some how? im unsure, can any one shed any light on this please?

I need an interlinking report for my site, is there a report in Moz or another application that tell me how all of my pages are linked to other pages on my site?
I am in the process of doing a redesign for one of my sites. I need an interlinking report for my site. Is there a report in Moz or another application that tell me how all of my pages are linked to other pages on my site?

Settings to crawl entire site
Not sure what happened but I started a third campaign yesterday and only 1 pages was crawled, The other two campaigns has 472 and 10K respectively. What is the proper setting to choose in the beginning of campaign setup to have the entire site crawled. Not sure what I did different and I must be reading the instructions incorrectly. Thanks, Don

Domain.com and domain.com/index.html duplicate content in reports even with rewrite on
I have a site that was recently hit by the Google penguin update and dropped a page back. When running the site through seomoz tools, I keep getting duplicate content in the reports for domain.com and domain.com/index.html, even though I have a 301 rewrite condition. When I test the site, domain.com/index.html redirects to domain.com for all directories and root. I don't understand how my index page can still get flagged as duplicate content. I also have a redirect from domain.com to www.domain.com. Is there anything else I need to do or add to my htaccess file? Appreciate any clarification on this.

Open Site Explorer.. Bit of a let down?
Hi, not too sure if this is a discussion or rant!? I’ve been following SEOMoz for a couple of years now. Testing their tools, reading their blogs, sharing their content, and watching the whiteboard Friday videos (massive thumbs up to that one!). They are at the top of the game, no argument there. Although I should have done so much earlier, I have eventually signed up to the pro version and am about to migrate all my clients over. But there is one major caveat which I’m not sure should exist.. Open Site Explorer. Don’t get me wrong, OSE provides invaluable metrics, some that no other ‘crawler’ provides, but it is far from perfect, there are things that we SEO’s need, and are hoping to get! Some feature SEOMoz could add; Ability to view a chart of ‘link types’ (i.e. blog post, social media, Press Release etc..) – Linkdex do this! Utilise a ‘fresh‘ backlink index as Majestic SEO do. ( we do use majestic alongside SEOMoz) Crawl more frequently – enough said! Index all ‘not so good’ backlinks – this will help identify what backlinks AREN’T helping. I realise this is a lot easier said than done, and I’m sure SEOMoz are working on solutions.. just can’t wait till they launch! What do you think? IS OSE more than it’s cracked up to be? Could it be improved? Let me know 🙂 Lee

Sub-domain not crawled
One of our sites was recently re-designed. The home page is a landing page (www.labadieauto.com) and I moved the blog to this domain (labadieauto.com/blog/) and put a link is the bottom left of the home page. Since the change the SEOMOZ campaign overview is showing only 1 page crawled. This is not setup as a sub-domain so why isn't it showing in the crawl? Help!
